  1. So AK, what's you're cure for the 28 cases of carpel tunnel syndrome you'll be presented with on your next visit?
  2. The protocols still need to be approved by the state, no? Wisconsin DHFS is trying to return all services to the state level. No more John Wayne services. Sorry Dust, couldn't resist.
  3. When I went to MSOE the most sought after professors were the ones who were still actively working outside the school. A couple were even the ones who wrote the books we were using. Even still there were students who claimed the professor "didn't know what he was talking about". If someone wants to find a reason not to believe their instructor (read: excuse not to listen to), they'll find one. Yes, it would be nice for the instructor to still be working in the field to keep up on new drugs, procedures, etc. to keep his knowledge base current. However, I think the biggest thing this does is make the students feel like he's a little more at their level therefore more approachable. I'll take an instructor with 25 years of experience that's 10 years old and wants to teach over one with 5 years of current experience and a god complex anyday.
  4. I can understand the want to find the cause of the problem to identify it in future offenders. I also understand that rehabilitation should be the goal of detention. However, I don't believe that the cause is that mystic in this case. I can maybe, almost, barely believe she didn't know she was pregnant and this delivery scared the heck out of her. But if she was scared, why did she not call for help. If anything 5 pounds or heavier drops out of me, rest assured there will be screaming. I believe that the delivery came at an inopportune time and she came up with a very poor plan to deal with the situation. Maybe the investigation will prove otherwise, but I'm not holding any breaths. I believe there are two reasons people follow rules: fear and faith. Considering the casual attitude that surrounds most religions, I believe religious faith is pretty weak (in America and not including religious radicals, their strength of faith is scary). Given the state of our world, I don't believe it's much of a stretch to say that the faith in the brotherhood of man is on it's last legs as a whole. Granted there are times when it strengthens, these time usually follow some sort of catastrophe. This would leave fear. I do believe that there are many people who fear our judicial system but the number is in decline. Most fear comes from the possiblility of being sued. Maybe if someone would sue the mothers on the baby's behalf, this would happen less. The judicial system needs to be feared by the guilty, not the honest and I don't see this as being the case. I think that the punishment of the guilty does more than make my id happy, but maybe that's just my superego talking (sorry don't remember much past Freud from psychology). Given the time of day that I'm writing this, I'm sure there are holes in my reply. Feel free to tell me where I need the plugs.
  5. Supposedly the snap off seals can be considered one of the locks in a two lock system, at least for our requirements. Who would have rules or regs on this other than the service and the state?
  6. When the crew calls you an hour before your shift to see if you could come in a little early, like NOW.
  7. I'm surprised it took you this long to post, Dust! Must have caught you offline. I think I could have taken out the Mexican Army with all the stuff I was "going to buy once I got the money" from those magazines when I was a teenager. I was going to ask you about a sniper who grew up in (Alabama? Arkansas?) as a child and ended up becoming the guy. He wrote a couple books, and if I remember correctly, is the guy the movie Sniper is based on. I'll PM when I remember if nothing else. By the way, did you spend a lot of money at Army Surplus stores as a kid too?
  8. If this was in response to my question, it's not quite what I was looking for. We have a EMT-I & EMT-P selective spinal immobilization protocol for trauma patients. We assess for neuro deficit/complaint, point tenderness, anatomic deformity, MOI, distracting injury, and communication issues. Based on our findings, we may or may not immobilize the pt. If the response was not to my question, I'll shut up and stand over here. Is the IDEA any better than the KEDS or KODE?
  9. Do you guys have a selective spinal immobilization protocol?

    Kermit?

  11. Think soldier of fortune magazine but cheaper.
  12. I can tell you now it's not in there. I just wanted to see if anyone would fess up to having a copy. And it only took 7 minutes to find someone! Stories from a malcontent youth. Do you have any copies of Palladin's Press by any chance?
  13. From the incident or the same vehicle? Same vehicle would make more sense, but with state protocols...
  14. Anarchist's cookbook, Chapter 4 Pipe Bombs: Do not drill the hole for the fuse after loading the pipe with powder and capping the ends.
  15. I think Oprah just dropped you from her book club. I've tried running a hen house. Works about as good as nailing Jello to a tree. At my fulltime job I have 10 - 12 employees and it seems that the male to female ratio of 1 : 1 works out the best. Not that you can hire based on sex, but when it happens to work out that way, life is a little better. To the origional question, backstabbing and lying are part of every profession from polititian (I know, too easy) to the guy who screws the top on Elmer's glue bottles. An honorable profession in no way garuntees an honorable person.
  16. I agree, but apparently we're the minority. I hear in California they're trying to make possession of common sense a felony...
  17. I've been looking for this!
  18. Isn't that an EMS requirement? I understand that in some desolate areas there are communication problems where you can't get someone online, but that's the only exception.
  19. Sounds like your company is being hung out to dry by the county, unless I misinterpereted, which is common for a county to pick up the lowest bidder and complain about it later. Good on you for wanting to stay for the betterment your home. However, I'd keep my resume updated for the new company if I were you as a CYA. How many of your coworkers share your concerns?
  20. You may want to check to make sure that there are no mandatory time periods that you have to wait before going to medic school. If you do have to wait, there are plenty of things you can do in that time to better prepare you for medic school that may not even be required, but will have great value. Good luck with your class. P.S. Asking questions here will help you with topics you have trouble with in class. Just make sure you search the topic first, your question may already have been asked.
  21. I agree with the theories that the alert is from electrical "pre-tone" sounds. My alarm clock and pager both do that. I think the human mind is able to pick up on so many cues that we consciously don't notice. "I used to think that the brain was the most interesting thing in my body. But then I thought, look what's telling me that!" - Emo Phillips As far as the chemical/electrical antenna properties of the brain, thanks for putting that idea in my head. Now I will be awake before the pager goes off because I'll be up all night worried about brain cancer. EyeDawn, although I don't agree with your theory as it's a little too "Outer Limits" for me, I wish it were true. Especially if it were possible to get a bucket to store a little time fluid.
