  1. Anyone still wondering how the south lost?
  2. That is assuming you get a good partner. The four years between basic and medic I consider lost opportunities to better treat patients and make more informed decisions regarding patient care. You can always work while in class if necessary.
  3. EASY TURBO! It wasn't a loaded question. At least it wasn't intended to be. I WAS genuinely curious about what you guys do. As has been stated by others yourself included, medical response is not and should not be your responsibility. It sounds like you perform support for emergency services already on scene which frees up people to do their jobs which is fine. What I don't know is what costs you accrue for staff, fuel, equipment, reimbursement to volunteers, etc. I jumped on a guy a few momths ago here without taking the time to understand his point of view and regreted it.
  4. Geezer squeezer? Wasn't that the tabloid name for Anna Nicole? What size patients will it work on?
  5. Well, they would have been a lot harder to roll down the street. I wouldn't want to carry them very far. That gave Fat Albert a hernia!
  6. How often does your team respond to an emergency?
  7. Kevin, thanks for the explanations. Personally, I know jack about the alphabet soup of response teams. In my area things are a little different as we typically know resources by name. In areas like this, it's frustrating to see money given to groups whose need is seemingly based on what if. I think a lot of responsibility relies on the few opportunities you have to respond to an emergency.
  8. Good point Ruff, but no. Manhole covers are heavy because they are thick metal so they are able to support the weight of traffic. The round shape assures they don't dent anyone's head. Any other shape could fall through the hole.
  9. Spenac, what area do you cover? I just drove through the top of Texas. Do buildings ever get torn down. If so, they missed a couple along I-40.
  10. From what I've seen, the system is pretty much set up to fail. Nursing home runs, although sometimes pointless, do tend to make me appreciate my job a little more. At least I get to leave the NH.
  11. In the second weekend of November there is a trauma conference I'd like to go to where a former local EMT will be speaking. He was in the back of an ambulance that rolled while L/S back to the hospital a few years ago. The details are a little fuzzy, but I believe transporting a pt. with a broken leg, and there ended up being at least 1 fatality from the accident. He ended up paralized from the waist down. I'd hate to think that each service has to go through their own tragedy before they look at how they use L/S.
  12. Chuck Norris uses a live rattlesnake for a condom. That poor snake.
  13. There would need to be a public access defib nearby.
  14. Yeah, a couple times. But that's because they make me work with crackers all the time. Actually some diversity would be nice, but you can't expect too much in northern Wisconsin.
  15. The most interesting question I was ever asked at an interview was for intern work with Harley Davidson. The question was "Why are manhole covers round?"
  16. The finance department named our rigs. They're named after the seven dwarves. This ensures we will never have more than 6 ambulances as no one wants to call in: "Dopey is on scene."
  17. Sorry, but I can't find any reason why anyone would need to bring their child to a call. I understand rural EMS, really. I grew up in a town of 128 people depending on traffic. Our zip code was only 3 numbers long. Depending on how good of a golfer you are, you could drive through town in two different ways. Ok, enough. Anyway, if there weren't enough volunteers to respond, mutual aid was called. Granted this was fire & first responders. We didn't transport, ever. So it's not like there was a risk of no response. Even if we were responsible for transport (shudder) there would have been shifts of coverage to ensure the people responsible to respond were prepared. In a case of fire, mutual aid was called anyway unless it was a car fire or something minor. As far as ride-alongs for minors. This seems like a bad idea. Very bad. There's no reason for it. If they want to learn about first aid, they can join the scouts. If your service is actually using children for ems or fire, close your doors and walk away. If I were at your fire for mutual aid and I find out you have a kid responsible for fire suppression, we're going to have a serious discussion about our mutual aid agreement as soon as the fires out.
