  1. One of the great things about this country is freedom of expression. The downside is the freedom applies to ass clowns too. Maybe you have learned some things about your members that you didn't want to know but maybe wern't suprising. The flag should be displayed properly or not at all. Anything else is an insult. Then again, someone is probably designing stars and stripes condoms as we speak.
  2. Didn't see the treatment afterwards, but the fall looked pretty wicked. Almost 1 point for Darwinism.
  3. That is a common complaint of women during an MI and sometimes it's the only complaint. Probably shouldn't be assumed benign (even if it's the eighth time to the same residence). What was her estimated weight? Were the B/P's all taken w/ the pt. in the same position (i.e. standing, sitting, lying down) or varied positions? Did she change mental status during the B/P changes? What was her medical history?
  4. 1) It looks like either the MOD isn't backing up the decisions/reports given by EMS or they are jumping at any chance to call a trauma code. Probably the latter. 2) If the pt. is being charged for the staff being called in, that is wrong. They should only be charged for services received. 3) Is the Level 1 TC a different medical group? If not, no if the patient is that serious, they should be flown from scene or hospital helipad. I've heard arguments before about how flight transport is dangerous, is a waste of resources, makes our ER look bad, etc., yet, our area is adopting a protocol that sounds similar which has me concerned now. The flight teams encourage at least calling for a flying standby based on MOI. The difference is, if the flight doesn't touch down, no charge. Apparently this isn't the case with your hospital. I think your patients will come to the same opinion about how they're being billed and word usually travels fast.
  5. I would agree with Yummy that there is probably more to that story. Besides, what other profession would alcohol at work? If you have fundraisers that involve alcohol, it should be gone when the event is over.
  6. Um, Rankin, if you're coming dangerously close to burnout, why are you taking the medic class? There is little in EMS scarier to me than a burned out medic. If it's that bad, you should talk to your employee health department.

  8. Yeah, only AMR union employees are allowed to do that!
  9. I think if you post a thread entitled "Bash the Ban" and send it to EMT City Administrator...
  10. Thanks Dust, the positive attitude comes in part to not running a code on my own yet. ITK, I made the clique?
  11. I don't think I would wait for the pulse ox to tell me there's poor perfusion in the extremity. Kind of like using the smoke detector for an oven timer, no?
  12. Also found under "I passed!" Thanks to those who have replied to my previous posts and who are involved in this site. It's really nice to have a place to go to study EMS without studying EMS. Now I start the second half of my education.
  13. I just went to my aunt's funeral this last Wednesday who died of lung cancer after a long history of smoking. Anything (within reason) that can be done to help people quit smoking, should be done. Smoking has never helped anyone become better at anything other than dying. I'm also an ex-smoker for four years April 26th so I understand as well as anyone the difficulty of quitting. It's the right of the employer to decide who they're going to hire. If they decide to make not smoking part of the hire requirements, it's their decision. The government, however, should not be able to control legal recreation as long as it does not adversely effect others. My right to swing my fist around ends at your nose. Smoking is not part race, color, creed, or religion (with the exception of smoking at rituals, but they usually aren't performed at work) or any other protected condition. Smoking is a decision, and if you decide to smoke you have to deal with the consequences. I do agree that companies should help current employees quit if they are making a culture change like that though. In my area, periodic physical testing is becoming part of the job. If you don't pass the physical test, you get a couple weeks to retest. If you fail again, my understanding is you're fired. I haven't seen this become a hard and fast rule yet, but it's on it's way. I believe that the physical requirements of EMS have been ignored for a while (in my area anyway). An anti-smoking policy condones alcoholism and drug use?!? Evil Kenevil could not have made that leap in rationale. I'm sure if you look through your company's requirements of conduct, they have guidelines on both issues. I highly doubt the administration is "Pro-rave parties".
  14. You don't need to be disappointed. You know the answer to the subject question.
  15. I think that applies to a lot of people.
  16. Make sure you're able to catch the opening at your local Blockbuster.
  17. Or they'll hang on in the hospital bed until a certain family member gets there and then pass when everyone steps out to get coffee. Wasn't it Mark Twain who stayed alive until he saw Haley's comet and then died a few days later?
  18. So...you're a walking wacker? Couldn't you pawn off a couple phones for a car payment?
  19. ...or number of questions to be more precise. I just took the NR EMT-P test today and now have joined the nervous masses waiting for test results. I waiting for EMT test results might actually be worse than waiting for EPT test results. In any case, I finished the test in about 77-78 questions. From what I have seen, that is a good sign, or is it. I felt pretty good after the test but now I'm more nervous than Paris Hilton in church. Anyone have any experience to share (not with Paris; well, then again...)? Sorry for misleading anyone but I anticipated style points from Dust regarding the subject line and didn't want to disappoint.
  20. The only thing that would have made the review worse would have been use of the phrase "hilarity ensues!"
  21. Sadly, knowing the answer to this question will help me sleep at night. Is hypotension in tachycardia (190 bpm) caused by shortened systolic or diastolic time. I can see arguments for both both sides. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  22. Well played, man in hat. I wrote the story while doing other things which made for poor form. I have been fortunate to be able to work with good medics (including the ones in the story) and decided to increase my training. I also have noticed that if you want to get a decent amount of hours around here you need the medic license. Also, I wasn't trying to impress anybody with the story, especially someone toting automatic weaponry, although it probably sounds that way. It just pisses me off how little appreciation she has for what happened and the attitude she has developed.
  23. The fire department I was on needed 10 people in order to have the first responder class at the department instead of at the college (32 miles away). I promised I would show up for the classes but wouldn't guarantee anything after that. A couple months later a few of the same people wanted to set up a EMT-B class and this time they needed 15 people. I promised I would show up for the classes as I figured having the license would help my chances of getting on a paid FD. I had my first call: 2 vehicle MVC, 15 patients total, head-on at highway speed. No alcohol involved, just extremely icy roads (several responders fell on scene, but the broken glass helped). Vehicle 1: passenger van with 11 occupants (mostly children), en route to a church camp. 8 green, 2 yellow, 1 red. Vehicle 2 passenger car with 4 occupants en route to a dance at a local high school (first date for the boy and girl in the back seat), all passengers <18 y.o. 4 black initially, (poor assessment by an "off-duty RN" on scene) upgraded to 3 black and one dark red. I was on the transport with Miss Dark Red (aka first date girl). We (more they than me) were able to keep her alive during the transport. I found out that I liked EMS better than fire, although I am still pursuing a fire career. After months of surgeries and a lot of physical therapy she was completely able to roll a car into a ditch without wearing a seat belt and seriously injure the passenger of the car. I found out that there will be more EMS calls than fire because although they can make things fire retardant, they have yet to develop retard retardant. Apparently EMS throws a wrench in God's plan. I think the Paragod attitude has lessened but thats from a very small view of EMS.
