To set the scene We were working night shift on a state mob fire, We has a task force of 6 engines from our district ( imagine 20 of the biggest redneck volly firefighters, all walks of life etc.) we worked and on night 5 coming down off of the mountain about 0500.

The following occurred on district channel which was well known in scanner land

Command 21: Command 21 to lead truck

Brush 114: this is brush 114 and lead truck go ahead

Command 21: brush 114 why are you going so slow we are tired and hungry and wanna go home

Brush 114: Webby (command 21) take it down a notch its not easy to drive and roll a doobie on this bumpy road,

Needless to say we got a radio etiquette class the next week.

No just a domesticated deer

Again to set the stage

A friend of mine was a medic in San Francisco in the early 70's, at that time paramedics carried a .357 in shoulder holster. He also was a special forces Medic over in Vietnam.

medic unit: we have a 10-66 ( shots fired)

Dispatch: Are you Sure?

Medic unit: Yes, 2 Tours in Vietnam tells me what receiving fire looks like. Returning fire. medic clear

A couple ring to mind:

We were status Red (less then 25% of our fleet available) and our MDC's were down due to a CAD failure so everything was verbal. We had one dispatcher for 33 units on duty. It was crazy, everyone was talking over everyone else.

Medic XX: "Control, Medic XX 10-51 (enroute) DXX (one of the hospitals in Lee County, all the hospitals are in Delta codes.) ready to copy"

Control: "...... shut up".

Medic XX: "10-4, Do you want me to rub your feet too?"

I saw some paper on that.

Control: "Medic X, Rescue X respond possible signal 4 (MVC) XXX & XXX, response on tac-3, XXXX hrs."

Control: "Medic X, Rescue X, off-duty ff advising one possible pin in, one ejaculation, MedStar on stand-by (laughing heard thorughout the channel).

The other night I had my pager on for the hell of it (home bored) but wasn't intending on responding and ALS was dispatched to my city. We usually deal with 2 particular hospitals and a different one was dispatched to my city who NEVER NEVER comes to our town:

DISPATCH: 701 did you receive your page?

701: Negative --- wait a second --- just received --- --- --- is this a joke?

DISPATCH: Uhh 701 confirm your location, GPS may have frozen

701: Location Rt ** Southbound

DISPATCH: 701 no joke - respond to 123 XYZ CITY

The other night on the police scanner

Dispatch: 6-xx you have a package heading your way, your to expedite

6-xx....10-4 expediting

Dispatch: 6-xx the carrier wishes to know your location

6-xx: (gives location)

Dispatch: Affirmative...he'll be at your location in approximately 3 minutes

6-xx: package received

Dispatch: Did you get three?

6-xx: negative only one

Dispatch:man you got gipped, but oh well mission complete.

I was talking to the dispatcher a short while later....they were talking about donuts...haha.

Got another one that seems to happen often since they hired two new dispatchers.

Dispatch: Ambulance XX, your needed at the intersection of ABC and XYZ for a 10-50 with injuries. Car versus semi.

Hey dumba$$ dispatchers, that would make it a 10-52. 10-50s don't have injuries.

Nope

A 10-50 is an accident. PI or PD

10-52 is a request for an ambulance.

That is why 10 codes were to go away. To many variations. Lets all speak in clear simple english so we all get the message. If your service still uses 10 codes tell the boss they are in violation of rules passed after 9/11 and I say they suck if they don't change. :D
