Fine we will keep our god to ourselves as soon as you stop stirring up debate centered around religion and change your avatar. You keep your lack of faith to yourself and will keep our faith to ourselves.

Unfortunately my (personal) lack of faith does not influence or direct world policy. I don't control global politics. When your president (and similar world leaders, including my own) stop basing elements of policy and politics on personal religious doctrine. When they don't bring up "God" (they aren't talking about an absract God) or Christian (or whatever belief "they know is true") issues and have a real grasp on the world and proofs that show how reality works. Then I will change my avatar, and will keep my "God" to myself...

So then it will continue, you will bash religion and you will be bashed. Like I said it's what you live for.

I wonder what the cookie monster thinks of the issue?? :(

Not much:

Martha Stewart: And we're also going to see some wonderful carved wood replicas. You know what those are? Replicas?

Cookie Monster: Rep-a-lick-as?

Martha Stewart: Replicas.

Cookie Monster: Rep-a-lick-as. No, me no know that.

Martha Stewart: Of Noah's Ark, and those wonderful animals who spent a rather long time -- how many days and nights? On the Ark?

Cookie Monster: Uh... I think, uh, with room service, two weeks.

Martha Stewart: I think they spent a little longer...

Cookie Monster: You know what? Me have no idea what you talking about.

How would it be any different if I wrote a book with a few guys and said that it was from god? Why would no one believe me (I would probably end up in a psych ward)? What makes it any different/

It seems as though that statement alone should explain most of the issue Doc. If you write a book that convinces thousands of people to follow you, worship according to your beliefs, and is still the subject of worldwide scholarly studies 2,000 years from now...I'd be willing to bet people will take a good, hard, long look to see if it has something to offer them personally and/or add to their lives. (not trying to convince you the bible is valid, simply attempting to answer your question)

But, once again...this whole thread was just vs-eh?'s way of regurgitating his tired old lines on religion...I almost took his original question serious for a second...psych!!

Since this thread is already so far off in the ditch...I have a question for vs-eh?

Let's assume the majority of Christians are similar to those that have expressed opinions in this thread. Tolerant, kind, have a strong sense of self and community. They find peace and joy in the knowledge that doing right today pleases their God, and also that he has prepared a place for them to languish in peace with those that they love after their death. This is a communion that they enjoy for themselves, yet enjoy sharing with other like minded people even more.

What kind of damaged person finds so much happiness in attempting to steal that from them that he can seem to think of almost nothing else? You once trumpeted your victory over the faith of one of the most intelligent people on the board by sharing a private conversation you had had with them...Not only were you shallow enough to betray the faith they had in you to keep it private, you started a thread to gloat about how you had destroyed her faith in God! How you, being so strong, and so smart, were able to remove all of the above things from her life! You couldn't wait to tell the world! (of course non of it was true and she made you look like a monkey)

So I ask you hotshot, you've asked the motivations of Christians about 100 times on the City alone...what motives you to do this?

Why does attempting to damage peoples lives bring you such joy?

Dwayne

Umm if you are a Christian then you believe that Jesus brought a new covenant with God, ie the old testament and its rules/laws for the most part are null and void. Leviticus and Daniel are old testament. The OT books are mainly used by people of the Jewish faith, hence the name Jewish or Hebrew Bible.

Rid & Eydawn can probably explain the new covenant better than I can.

Shalom,

Marty

Matthew 5:17-18....."Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished."

I believe ceremonies are null and void, but not morals. Another example is the woman caught in adultery. The OT said adulterers were to be stoned to death. But Jesus taught differently. He basically forgave her, but told her not to do it again.

I'm not making much sense here, lol. :P

Pyroknight: You must be so proud of your wife.

Somedic

As a matter of fact, I AM! She entered the military straight out of high school; served honorably in the USAF for seven years; was an extremely talented and well-respected 911 dispatcher in two large urban areas, was a single mom when I met her, has supported me through two fire academies, EMT training, paramedic training, nursing school, and graduate school; and she still has the sex drive of a teenager. What's not to be proud of?

To bring this discussion back around, I think that a very vocal minority of homosexuals have the same mindset as VS - they like controversy and they relish seeing the reaction they get from people who have knee-jerk reactions. Both sides of this debate should take a chill and live and let live. There is nothing in the bible (or any other divine text that I am aware of) that requires followers to make public displays of their intolerance for others lifestyles. Christianity, I believe, goes so far as to extol "judge not, lest ye be judged." I know the Muslim doctrine is a smidge more aggressive in it's condemnation of homosexuality (note the sarcasm, people), but I hardly think Allah intended for anyone to OBSESS over the issue.

Unless someone is putting their hand on part of your anatomy or insinuating that they would LIKE to, how is anyone else's lifestyle affecting you? If a homosexual boy scout leader is teaching my son how good it feels to have his penis held, we have a BIG problem. If he's teaching him how to knit a scarf to keep his neck warm, am I supposed to be up in arms? The latest pedophile I saw on TV was some 400 lb. grandfatherly type with no previous record. He was "babysitting" little girls. THAT is a problem.

We have SO MANY other pressing issues in this country - nursing shortage, federal spending out of control, gang violence, a lack of affordable housing (to name a scant few) - do we REALLY need to be using our collective energy to debate the social palatability of two people of the same sex having a relationship? Since carbon dioxide has now been deemed a controlled pollutant, I propose that we tax people who spew excessive amounts of CO2 rich hot air into the atmosphere shooting off their big mouths attached to their miniature brains about topics that have no relevant impact on their lives!

MY problem is with dim-witted individuals making arguments they can't support (often which are unsupportable period) about issues that either cannot be solved or do not NEED to be solved, NOT with homosexuals (or metrosexuals, or transexuals, or any other -sexuals).

Whew! That was longer than I intended. I blame post-exercise hypoxia. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

First of all there are two issues that I immediately noticed and would like to note, which are,

1. Gays are flamboyantly sexual.

2. Marriage is a religious event. (Me being an atheist, this is the first time I've ever heard this or even thought about it. Heh.)

1. People focus on the leather-wearing dildo-juggling gays because that's what shocks people and therefore that's what people remember. It's ridiculous to say that a majority of gays go around being flamboyantly sexual and looking like this.

2a. You must admit that marriage carries many legal ramifications, such as spousal rights, etc. This is one of the reasons that there is a same-sex marriage issue.

2b. Do atheists not get married?

That being said, we will continue onto my occasional rantings that nobody gives a crap about.

First, what I think and feel about homosexuals. What I feel about homosexuals is the same as most college-age males. Let me be the first to say that I am extremely homophobic. In regards to homosexual males only, though. The way it works out in my head, homosexual males = ew. Homosexual females = HAWT. That pretty much sums it up right there.

And what do I think about homosexuals as people? They're just people, with a different sexual orientation. It's like right-handedness and left-handedness. Most people are right handed, some people are left handed. (Yes I do realize the distributions are different.) It's not like we persecute left-handed people and strip away their rights. Why should we make homosexuals have less rights?

Do I think same-sex marriage should be legalized? Well, why the hell not? It's not like they're harming anyone, they're just getting married. It may be discomforting to some people, but hey, not too long ago interracial marriages were discomforting to a lot of people.

I mean, it's a free country, or that's the way the expression goes. There's no fine print that says "Unless you're gay". So, why the hell not have same-sex marriages?

And that's a recurring question that I'd like to bring up: "Why the hell not?"

He has a belief too.

This same belief causes him to make people think through discussions like this one.

Yet Christians dont like it?

But Christianity is the faith that has killed millions of non-believers over thousands of years...

So, in reality, what is he doing different?

Our mistake is, allowing ourselves to not be accepting of the differences. To discuss and profur points regarding any topic is wonderful, but to get upset when one offers points back is closed minded and rather sad.

James

Scaramedics post on page one of the thread- I agree whole heartedly with.

Have whatever kind of relatioship you want. Marry whoever you want. As long as everyone one in a relatioship consents to the boundaries and terms and they are adults, they can do whatever the hell they want.

To every guy that says that homosexual men are disgusting then goes home and watches girl on girl porn- you are a hypocrit. To anyone who bashes religion and yet supports intolerant groups such as NOW, PETA or the NGLT- you are also a hypocrit.

tolerance does not go one way, it goes in every direction or it is not truly tolerance.

As for gay marriage- the government should not be involved in the first place, it is a religious union to be married. Government is sticking its nose in personal lives and legitimizing a social ideal and religious standard. If a person wants to be married to another of the same sex, then so be it. It is not Washington D.C.'s or any states business.
