  1. Good attitude, every job has its quirks regardless how much you like it. I am a weeee bit curious, how long have you been an EMT?
  2. What the hell is going on with people? This really sucks!! I am not a fan of the death penalty, but sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do.. Prayers to the families of the deputies and hopes the rest of the Sherrif's dept can pull through.
  3. Work with a "mentor" in the ambulance service where you are vollying. Discuss with this person what you are covering in class. Practice-Practice-Practice. Watch these boards, ask questions, Just my short .02 worth
  4. Way to go, Congratulations!!
  5. Thanks ERDoc, I see some points that I had not thought of. Thanks for the insight.
  6. Rather "sticky", since he does have a certification from the state, that I assume is not limited to any department or agency. The state is saying that he is qualified to render aid as an EMT. Unless he has done someting wrong to a patient I don't see how anyone can place sanctions on him for emergency care. Is there something I am missing here?
  7. I don't know where you are located, but some agencies have counseling available for the entire team or an individual. I am sure other team members feel the way you do, so it will also benefit them, that you all go together. As said earlier, do not hold it in, cuz it may "eat you up" later or even affect how you handle future calls. I must admit, children are my "weak point" when it come to seeing them get seriously hurt in an accident or worse. Please follow-up and talk it out with a pro.
  8. Great article. I am happy getting a "Thank You" from our patients, although I don't expect it. If I ever get a hug, I'm not sure how I would handle it. I just love what I do, and hope when I retire from my regular job, I can devote much more to being an EMT.
  9. Hell No!! You did an assessment, Pt was A&O, you recommended he get checked out, nurse was a witness (now in my mind a liar). Nuf said..
  10. Mike, Great goal to go for in the long run. Get your certs first so you can see how you feel about helping others and running the show at the same time. My personal thought, if I had the required funding, business plan, materials, and resources, I would still prefer to work for someone else. Owning a business is great but when the responsibility of running a business takes away from the passion of what you like to do (help people), there will be problems. Aside from what everyone else has said above, keep in mind "you are the ultimate "chief cook and bottle washer" Not to burst your bubble, JMHO..
  11. Welcome, you couldn't have come to a better location for insight, opinions and knowledge..
  12. I have to agree with paramedicmike. Since school is going to start real soon, I don't think you will have enough time to absorb anything of great value. You will have a lot to cover, and a lot of homework. Do, keep in touch on these boards.
  13. Welcome!! Lotsa good conversation and learning is within these boards. Enjoy.
  14. I was wondering if something happened because of the "scuffle". Agree, 100% thats how we continue to learn
  15. A hardy congrats to you and your bride!
  16. I must admit, I looked on google for nerves controlled from the spine. I will go back and look it up. I threw that out there because it seemed so specific. let me see if I can track it down again and post it here. It is because the symptoms were bilat, that made me look for a "common demoninator". My Edit: There is a site called suddenlyms.com that has an illustration of what I was talking about. I tried to copy and paste the image here but for some reason couldn't get it to work.
  17. probably a pinched nerve at 1T on the spine..... Controls nerves from the elbow to the fingers..
  18. I am trying to look for a "common denominator" that would affect both sides at the same time and points. I can only wrap my mind around something spinal or brain. (There being no outside the body influences).
  19. As an interviewer,I would be asking you what you have been doing to keep up your skills. Is there anything you have done at all where you used your skills? The online refresher suggestion sounds great, hope you give it some thought. My apologies jbro, I should have also welcomed you to these boards, there are a lot of great people here.
  20. I don't know why, but a possible stroke (slurred speech) crosses my mind. Could the slurred speech be caused by the ETOH? When was his last drink? Looks like most of the physical vitals are OK, I don't understand, why just from the elbows down. Has this happened to him before? Worst case of tennis elbow I ever heard of.
  21. Welcome!!!!!! Was stationed in Biloxi many years ago at Keesler Airplane patch. Have to say I enjoyed vast majority of it.
  22. "So no titration of O2 to maintain something resembling physiologic norms for a patient's pathology? Just 6 LPM or nothing?" It was 6 lpm generally for the pt with COPD, any other pt = up to 15 lpm only as needed. Good news is that the protocols should be changing this year
  23. We were taught that when transporting a COPD pt, we were to use humidified O2 only in the event of a long ride >20 mins, otherwise normal O2 at a reduced rate (6 LPM) only if the pt required it.
  24. I understand New York DOH is supposed to be changing their protocols later this year, to the extent of using venturi type masks, also reducing the requirements for NRMs.
  25. I just read a great post regarding the reduction of using backboards. Awhile back there was a post about reducing the over use of O2. I think both of them were by Doczilla. Is there a way we can develop a category/library where this kind of research can be stored wthin the site. These ideas have generated discussion within my own agency, but when I go to look for the info, I forget where it was located. It could even be a sponsor benefit.
