  1. Welcome to the site!!!!! It is going to be sooooo much fun to watch the posts of "difficult" people. In spite of some folks that can be termed that way. Some difficult people have presented interesting insights to issues raised on these boards. Sometimes I do the same thing, just stalk to see how a discussion os playing out. But, damn!! the viewpoints make interesting thought provoking reads..
  2. "That happens occasionally," Carrara said of the incident. "The main priority is to keep the patient safe, pull the vehicle over and make sure the patient doesn't hurt themselves or the firefighters." I have a problem with this quote from the article. It shouldn't happen at all, especially to the extent that one of the medical team couldn't go back to work.
  3. I generally do not use anything personal when on duty, cept for stethescope and pens. In my car I carry a small jump bag with b/p cuff, stethescope and general first aid supplies, in the event I come upon an accident before police get there. My scope is a Littman around $65.00, does a good job. I have also found that carrying a small radio where I can call in, to see if my team needs another set of hands at a scene, totally optional. I do have a visor light on the car but only use it when I am on my way to a call from home as sanctioned by ambulance company, can't use it for anything else! Just like a lot of posters said here, no need to go "wackers" (I paraphrased from posts). Don't spend money that you don't have too. Most of the time there may little that you can do at a scene without proper authority. Sorry I forgot to ask, how are you progressing so far? BTW forgotto add, started EMT when I was 60, sorry I didn't get to do it sooner,
  4. I am just curious, are you looking to go eventually into Paramedic? How long have you been an EMT-B.
  5. Can of Krylon and a size 11 boot, forget legal mumbo jumbo and political correctness!! (Sorry it's those deep in the back of my mind thoughts rearing their heads of what I would really like to do to people with no respect for the patient)!
  6. It os some of these wacky calls that break the stress and could make the job "fun". I am not implying I like to see someone hurt in any way, but that is what most of our calls are for!!
  7. Prayers for your friend's full recovery!!!!!!
  8. Well it is now June 1st. Wishing you nothing but the best toward becoming an RN. I think the folks here will still let you play in the sandbox!
  9. Hey Captain! Long time no hear. How is Katrina?
  10. OK, I'm convinced!!! I think I am going to get the tattoo of the "Die Hard EMS" snake with it's mouth wide open with the Star of Life in the background!! This will only be under the influence of puleenty of Jameson's!!!!!! The Jameson's will help overcome the fears listed in an earlier post of mine..
  11. To be honest with you, I have seen the same thing. Even as an electronics/telecommunications instructor I couldn't understand why students had their noses buried in a notebook for the whole class. My only point is using notes to make something understandable for you to remember. I only imply to make a few notes, don't rewrite the book!
  12. Pay no attention to the one behind the curtain!!!!!! Ok for all the young pups on this site that is from the Wizard of OZ!!!!!
  13. What does it take to become an EMT? Depends on where you live, for instance in New York you are required to attend approximately 140 hours of training (divided between lecture and hands on). Lots of hands on!! You will be required to spend some time in a Hospital emergency room and/or ride an ambulance for a certain number of calls. I forgot how many. What was the stress level and how did you handle it? Depends on the situation. If it is an Alpha call (not exactly life threatening) the stress level can be low. If you work with the patient and respect their family, it will generally stay that way. The higher the threat to life= the higher the stress level. sometimes you have to step back and regroup and let your partner take over. Cardiac/Respiratory arrest, motor vehicle accident (mva) or any accident resulting in trauma will bring that level up. When we get the call, we will sometimes discuss some very general ideas of what we will do, while enroute. Keep in mind, not all calls are life threatening Kind of equipment? Again this depends on your level "B" "A" "CC" "Paramedic" Generally we use B/P cuffs, stethescope, basic first aid supplies, different types of stretchers, spllnts (including traction), backboards, stairchairs, various drugs or medications. auxiliary airways for airway management, AEDs plus a lot more that I can't think of at the moment. Why? There is nothing greater than taking what would have been a bad situation for someone (your patient) and turning it around for the better, including saving a life, delivering a baby, just to name a few. You stated in your post that you were doing this for school. What kind of school? Are you contemplating becoming an EMT? IF so, I wish you nothing but the best in your studies. Remember there are a lot of posters here that will add much more to what I said with a lot of different variations. There is no one way to do everything, so just learn as much as you can. Just an opinion!!!!
  14. Welcome to the boards!!!!!! Lots of fantastic people here.... For your EMT course: Take notes Keep an open mind Ask a lot of questions Get your hands into it
  15. I have no problem using the word "denied". In the simplest explanation, it shows that you did question particular concerns that you had such as history or present problem. With the hundreds of patients you see, and one gets called into court, you don't want to have to worry "did I ask about......". You know you did and the patient "denied" it. Ma'am is there any chance you are pregnant? No sir I am not, I'm sure it is just my stomach acting up! Two years later you are called into court because of your manner of care for a person who turned out to be pregnant. Just a fleeting thought, or I am just bit by the litigious society we have here in the states..
  16. Served in the armed forces many years, I just don't have the guts to have needles poking me with inks. Plus I am afraid of what it would look like 20- 30 years down the road.

I'll take a dozen homemade pumpkin cinnamon buns pleeeeezze!!!!!
  19. The stretcher becomes "fixed" only due to the fact it will not roll around. Does that mean that once a person puts on a seat belt, they become fixed? We are all taught scene, personnel, and patient safety come first. An aircraft of any kind is unstable even in the best of hands and you do have to consider the patients welfare. Some times chemical restraint is necessary, but wrist type straps should be mandatory.. Just a simple opinion!!
  20. Same Here!!! Thanks for your service, and hang in there.
  21. I sort of have a problem with a "lift" test. I hope they don't expect you to single handedly lift the "patient" and get him on to a stretcher. Usually you will not be the only person there. Am I missing something?
  22. Whatever it is, just keep it up, It must be your cool demeanor and dedication to delivering the right kind of advice or opinions. OK, enough of that, on my part!! I have to get back to writing my training courses. Lunch is over!!
  23. Pretty Cold!!!!! You have their address on the PCR, send it to them later. At the time you pick them up, there are other more pressing things on their minds. When you get a bill from your physician, you are usually in a more calm state of mind.
  24. Captain, You pose a very tough question. Assuming we are within town, my first concern is going to be my family, once I think they are safe, I will continue with helping others. I guess I am not used to earthquakes here in the northeast, and never gave it much thought. The latest one we had was about a year ago and the epicenter was in Virginia. We felt the rumble here in L.I. My wife and I discused what to do as far as taking cover and protecting ourselves from injury.
