  1. Maybe some uniforms from back when you started?
  2. Wear a light uniform and use the AC a lot? Get one of those bandanna things that you dip in water and it gets cold for 8 hours? Drink a lot of cold water? Show up in the buff?
  3. In a group, we've been told by waiters or restaurants managers to change our subject, other guests were complaining. Just discussing certain calls, it seems perfectly normal, apparently we're not normal.
  4. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13442226/ Can't be too hard, I took that test and got 100%; the only questions I stumbled on was: "Which of the following amendments to the Constitution does NOT address or guarantee voting rights?" I clicked 7th, and it turned out to be right.
  5. No, you use your partner's shears! Put them back in his (or her) pocket.
  6. If the patient wants treated, to an extent, and doesn't want transported; that's covered in our protocols.. We've also had patients who wanted transport, but no treatment. I'd have them sign a refusal of treatment and amend it to note that transport was made. We can suggest that they seek treatment on their own, if they refuse treat/transport. However we can't suggest that they don't need EMS, or treat them and tell them to get further treatment on their own. Also, If I don't believe refusal is appropriate, even though a conscious/competent patient has the right to refuse. I'd suggest that they speak with our medical command physician.
  7. That's not how it is here.. The ones who can pay, abuse the service, and never pay. The ones who can't, often don't call, because they don't want to be in debt to someone. We have a lot of patients offer something, in exchange for EMS service. Heck, they even come a month before and say, hey, we might need an ambulance, but won't be able to pay, how about I do this; or can we work something out.... and so on. Then, of course, there are the deadbeats who take from everyone possible, welfare, SSD, they lie about an illness to get a ride, and feel it's owed to them, so they don't have to pay. Yanno, we owe them something for their selfless work, as a professional couch potato.
  8. Many newer vehicles have some sort of computer that you can hook up to and it shows things that are wrong. They did that to mine, I was sort of impressed.. and glad. Since the dealer kept insisting that I was in fact not hearing something similar to a can of rocks when ascending hills. Maybe it also records crash information?
  9. Considering that dispatch information is only as good as the caller gives, you really have no idea what the unit was dispatched for... They could have been told any number of things, by several different callers. Everyone thinks they're doing a good deed by calling 9-1-1 and giving off the wall, potentially false information, with out looking into the matter first.
  10. I seen a small image, from the side where the pick up was. That thing was absolutely crushed. Yanno how it works on rural roads, everyone goes fast, and hopes nobody else is coming. It looks like speed was a factor in the cause of death, just from pictures, and it was probably mutual speed infractions.
  11. Event Medical (Supplier) www.eventmedical.com 0765 Noel Street Los Alamitos Galls/Los Angeles Equipment Superstore 6365 S. Arizona Circle Los Angeles Store Hours: M-F: 8:30am-5:30pm, Sat: 8:30am-2:00pm PT, closed Sunday Phone: 310-338-6800
  12. Remote mining locations; clinics in remote villages and fishing camps, etc. The US still has a lot of remote locations, so if you're in to that, you may have options.
  13. IMO. All providers need to be able to do CPR, using a BVM; as a single rescuer. I've been in that position on occasion. A third crew member is a luxury that we aren't always lucky to have. While expensive, there are BVM's that have mask restraints, and a 36" long hose between the mask and bag, to allow you to stay at the victims side, and ventilate them, with out moving around. The patient gets the same, if not better tidal volume, and you're as safe as you can manage in your CPR position. However, since many ambulances don't have restraint systems for persons performing resuscitation, you're probably not safe anyway. --Anyhoo The BIG boxes.. Trauma, IV, etc.. They look heavy, but roomy.
  14. "Old Pal" Boxes. I'm talking about the BIG boxes.. Trauma, IV, etc. Boxes are easier to clean, however they also seem to keep rain water for extreme lengths of time.
  15. Yep, it couldn't have been modern medicine that saved her, it had to be Gawd. Now, if she died, it would have been due to the failure of medicine.
  16. They do have vans... Maybe we could combine services. Consolidate, if you will, and earn $41/hr.
  17. I'm going to say, it's one of those Survivalink "First Save" AED's, judging by that ugly ass orange encasement.
  18. I emailed an article for "EMS Week" to the local newspaper. It's a weekly venue, rural area, they almost always welcome articles from me, or pictures. If I don't send one, they call and ask for stuff. Anyhoo. When I sent my personally written article last October, for Fire Prevention week, they put it on the front page. They even had a huge banner. This week, I wrote a nice article explaining EMS, what we do, how a 911 call works, the history of the funeral homes & ambulance services to modern EMS. I picked up the paper last night. Nothing. The owner/editor said, "well, we really didn't think it would be of any interest".
  19. Actually; $89,000 isn't that much, speaking in terms of fire and EMS apparatus. We have a relatively simple, basic package on a ladder truck that cost over 3/4 of a million. In fact, the smallest apparatus we have, a 2005 Ford F550 Attack Engine (regardless of truck size-1000GPM Pump Size is NFA definition of an Engine) was still more than $160,000. So, their unit is either small, used or cheap and stock built. You can't get a quality apparatus, cheap. If you're looking to get a vehicle, cheap, change professions and become a plumber.
  20. I'm sure they weren't hunting for any misc. ambulance. Someone did something, or said something.
