  2. so this is based only on prehospital RSI? are there a lot of medics allowed to RSI patients? we are not, only the flight crews here..... Dr. Wang will be at our update conference this weekend debating the issue with one of our prehospital docs....of course I have to work, but from what I understand the place is going to be packed!
  3. Good job Asys! I would agree that you did the right thing and treated the patient....we jump around in protocols often....sometimes you have to..... Redemption is such a good feeling!
  4. I think if you're not in EMS it's hard to understand...I know I'd have a hard time understanding the "relationship" between partners..... Most of my partners have been male. I prefer that. We joke around, have beers together, call if we need to. Some are married, engaged, and some are single....we are friends and partners and that's it. I do believe that it's a different kind of relationship than you'll see anywhere else because you DEPEND on your parnter in sometimes very high stress situations...not like you're asking them to make a copy for you, or run some proposal to the next office. You need to trust them with lifting, driving (sometimes is horrible conditions), and doing what you need them to do. I don't know if I got my point across the way I wanted to....but if YOU have a problem, then you NEED to discuss it-openly and honestly-or it will fester...and that can't be good. Good luck.

Something I have been paying attention to is staff retention....while we all may move on to bigger and better things, the service I'm at now has people (some part time or volunteers) that have been there for YEARS. The volunteers are scheduled and they even show up! The last service I was at, I was there for one year and was second in seniority....hmmmm....... The trucks are new and the equipment is well maintained and in excellent condition. They offer some CEU's from time to time at the station, they pay for the must-haves (ACLS,PALS) etc. The shifts aren't bad either. I'd like to have more aggressive protocols, but I guess you can't have everything you want-a girl can dream! While no one will be happy all the time, the fact that people stick around as long as they do I think says something..... just my .02.
  6. Do you know anyone with access to the Westlaw website?? I don't even know much about it, but my ex had to look ADA stuff a few years ago, and a law student he knew was able to log on to Westlaw and get TONS of info. Just throwing it out there...... Good luck!
  7. Asys, I would have to imagine that you're heart rate when the guy coded probably made his HR at 178 look slow!! I haven't had the silent MI patient (that I know of) yet, but the flash pulmonary edema........oh boy! Twice, with in days, I was given orders for albuterol for wheezes and BOTH pt's had flash pulmonary edema.....and I was brand brand new. Scared the crap outta me!!

  9. I don't know how long the course is or what it entails, but I will say this... how can learning anything be wrong?? And why not take a course that you feel may be a little above your level...why not reach up?? I think it's a great idea--good luck!
  10. Are the 21% who said "yes" serious, or are they just being PC? THINK about it...... I'll throw in my .02.....assuming someone is deaf - cannot hear - , not HOH ..... there are entirely TOO many things to worry about (for lack of a better word) on a scene to have to also worry about trying to get my partners attention by having to tap them or wonder if they can feel vibrations or something. seriously...can you picture it? Think about the times when you have a multi car MVC or something and people are scattered everywhere, asking questions, stating complaints, etc-patients, FD,PD etc. HOW is a deaf person going to handle a situation like that?? Or a medical call even....think about how much communication you have with your partner, family, patient...I cannot even imagine it. I try to picture a deaf crew member, and I can't get past what I'd do when the tones went off-go find partner, tap on shoulder--then what?? People who cannot or no longer do the job, need to bow out.....and those are the ones I respect. I do not believe the sense on entitlement some people feel.... My daughter has 20/200 vision, a fighter pilot she will never be. Should she expect to be let in to the service and fly planes because she wants to, because she loves it, because she wants to serve her country?? - absolutley not! and that is meant with no disrespect at all. I think asys said it best in his previous post.

  13. :shock: wow asys...good job trying to explain your point... just...wow..... there's nothing I can add that hasn't already been said. Looking back, the younger kids in our class--20,21--did not finish...none of them. The youngest to finish was 24. At the end, each and every one of the 'young 'uns' blamed everyone else for not getting their hours in, not one of them took responsibilty for themselves.... interesting......
  14. I think it's human nature. It happens in every profession, through all ranks I'm sure. (think about it...boss, secretary; principal,teacher....etc, etc, etc) And how about nepotism, I saw that mentioned...what about Mommy or Daddy who's kid is in the class?? At some point, I believe it works itself out (if they can't cut it, they don't make it type thing) If it involves two consenting adults-who cares?? Anyway, there isn't anything you or I or anyone else can do about it, and it's been going on forever. If it doesn't directly affect you (i.e. you aren't the one 'involved')-let it go.....concentrate on yourself and your studies......who cares who's knockin' boots with whom! Just my .02
  15. in the last two weeks, I have had 3 pain control calls...not one person would let me give them ANYTHING.....we have morphine, nitrous, and fentanyl. I tried everything I could think of to convince the people to let me help with pain control...two were 'afraid' and one was concerned it would 'mess with her coumadin'.....after explaining the benefits of ALL the medications, each one declined. Two were dislocated shoulders (one with an accompanying break-this patient has since died....eek!) and one was severe back pain. All three were in very obvious distress...... Anyone have any suggestions there?? Is there a better way to explain the medications? Just curious.

UGH!!! one that sticks in my mind (because it was said VERY LOUDLY in front of family while working an arrest) was "......because I broke about 10 of her ribs doing compressions" <insert my look of disgust here> and from same said basic on a different call--"looks like a-fib to me, but I'm not the medic" (no sh!t.....so shut up and let ME do MY job) oh, and I'm not a basic hater......just one in particular.......
  17. I agree with everyone else...take a day off...and do NOTHING! Stay in your PJ's all day, play with the kids, don't answer the phone...and don't feel guilty for doing it. I had this issue a few months ago...I was actually talking to the point of non-sense....just blabbing away about being stressed, not making a bit of sense, heart racing--stressed about going TO work, and more stressed about calling off--my finacee said "I'm calling you off sick" and he did. After I got over the shock I had the best day off ever! (we actually went away for three days....no minitor, no pager, no radio Feel better soon!
  18. We have standing orders - up to a point- where you are then to contact Medical Command. One Command system has a doctor specifically for this reason...that's all he/she does is answer the phone for command. Another system, you call and get the ER doc. Either way, I like having the "back-up".
  19. I hear that Summit! I do know of some services that are allowed to sleep whenever all duties are done--we usually have ours knocked out by 11am--good nap time --if we could. I just don't understand the logic....sure, we may NOT be awake ALL night, but even up in the middle of the night once screws me all up. ahhhh, well.
