  1. That's not bad. I got through the drug test and little personality and written tests they tossed at me in April. When they offered me a Job as a Basic on a 24 hour truck in the Baton Rouge area the pay rate was $7.18 per hour starting. I havn't called them back.
  2. I dealt with it when I worked as a Firefighter/EMT locally. It's not really a problem anymore. See here-> http://forums.firehouse.com/showthread.php...2034#post682034
  3. Maybe if they paid better they would get more employees. I applied a month ago, was offered a EMT job. When I asked what I'd be making I was told, $7.18 an hour. No way in heck. That is sad. Burger shack employees are making more than that around here.
  4. NOw that's funny. Thanks for the laugh.
  5. That is similar to something I was envisioning after Katrina hit last year. Lots of nursing home patients and special needs people needed transport and traditional ambulance models were rushing to keep up. I remember episodes of the TV series M.A.S.H. where patients were often transported on buses which had been modified to hold several litters. I was talking to friends about how useful a couple of MASH busses would have been then. A handful of these German, bus type ambulances would have really come in handy to help get hospital and nursing home patinets out of the hurricane strike zone in an efficient manner.
  6. I also work at a Steel Mill. I'm contracted through a Security company. I make $10.50 per hour. I was looking to change jobs so sent out a few applications. Got a job offer from a major private ambulance service. They are begging for Basics and Medics. Their pay rate? Just $7.18 per hour for riding a 24 hour truck. I can get a job flipping burgers for more than that. I think I'll stay at the mill.
  7. So if you don't show up for work you can make a pretty pretty good? Cool. Stay home of a week and you can pay off the car note.
  8. No problem. Now stop yelling. Just messing with ya.
  9. They banned cellblock776. Cellblock is a well behaved contributing member in good standing at Firehouse.com. I got your PM but not sure how to take it. You misspelled inbred. Use spell check next time.
  10. Here's a solution. Both crewmembers are female but wait...they are both lesbians. Oh heck! Now what? Just pointing out the absurd. I agree akflightmedic. It's a stupid double standard.
  11. Space after punctuation. Like this. Whether it's a period, a comma or anything else, leave a space. REMAINDER OF POST REMOVED - ADMIN
  12. If you are required to be there then you should be getting paid. Simple as that.
  13. RE: chat rooms. I post in 8 or 9 forums and most have chat rooms for members. I never utilize them. OK, maybe once in a blue moon I'll pop in to the chat at Atheist Network when I know a couple buddies will be in there. Otherwise I don't bother with them. I just scan the titles of the threads in the forums, reply if I feel inclined and move on.
  14. Everyone I've ever talked to about dreams mentioned dreaming about work from time to time. It's such a big chunk of our lives. I dream about my current job and even jobs I've had years ago. Within the last couple of weeks I've dreamed about being back in the Army, doing pill call at the prison and even running calls with the fire department. Your dreams may often incorporate events in your life so it's not unusual at all.
  15. People, please stop calling me an ambulance driver. I have never driven an ambulance in my life. Fire trucks yes but never ambulances. Thanks.
  16. Anytime a hospital gos on divert here they notify the EMS service and it is anounced over the radio for all units to hear.
  17. So what did you do to tell them different? Nothing? That's on you. I'm not saying you have to take a job as a school teacher but when someone is wrong, correct them. If you aren't even in uniform on the job you have no reason to let Joe Public walk around thinking you are a meter maid. You tell the jerk worried about a ticket to get his face out of your space, that he's an idiot and to step off. Threatened with violence? Call the cops. You don't have to be intimidated by some clueless punks. Maybe you need to take some lessons from Samuel L Jackson and let them know in no uncertain terms that you "aint the m*****f*****g Popo so get your m*****f*****g face away from me before I pop a cap in you like Tupac, B***h." People sometimes mistake me for police too but I don't let them get away with calling me "officer". When getting my car inspected at a service station a cashier was trying to decide which keys to give me after my car was checked out. I was not in unifrom and not on duty. "Oh, that's right. You're the cop." she said. I looked at her all crazy and asked, "Who the h*** said I was a cop? It stupid s*** like that which gets people killed lady. Now give me my f****** keys." Let them kow in no uncertain terms that you aren't the police and they are morons. If you have had shootings then insist on police clearing scenes in those areas in the future. There are neighborhoods around here the ambulance won't drive into until the deputies radio the all clear. For idiots like this it probably won't make any difference WHAT you wear, you will still be part of the system which means they see you as a target. The fact that you aren't armed and can't return fire makes you an even more attractive target. They won't open doors for you? Easy. Go back to the rig, radio dispatch and notify them that you were unable to contact the caller and are back in service. Treat it as any other case where the patient is gone on arrival or refuses treatment. Remember, they called you. If they change their minds when you show up, screw them. I wear the same type of uniform, blue button up shirt with silver badge, black slacks and black boots. As I said before, don't let some idiot misidentify you in public. Example, I'm on my way to work and stop at the Subway sandwich shop for something to put in my lunchbox. The girls behind the counter making sandwiches are goofing and joking and one motions toward me and says "Girl, you better settle down before I have that policeman arrest you." Now do I let that slide? Heck no. I set them straight. "Who are you talking about? Me? Do you see anything saying POLICE on me? Do you see a gun or handcuffs on me? I'm not a cop and all I got on my belt are these shears. Now if you fall out back there I'll be happy to come around back there, use these to cut your clothes off and check for injuries. How's that sound?" She gets the point and answers, "I'll pass." "Good." I say, " Then put my potato chips in the bag and let me go before I'm late getting to work. Next time don't go assuming every uniform is police." As I walk out I hear her friend kidding her, "Daaammmnn, girl. Fat boy said he was gonna get you neked if you pass out. You thought he was five oh. That will show you." What's gonna happen? She gonna complain that you cussed her out or insulted her for being a retard? She thought you were a cop a minute ago. Seriously people. I enjoy helping people that need help. But I will not abide by the average person making bone headed assumptions. It's your fault if you allow them to get away with it.
  18. Proving once again just how clueless the average citizen is.
  19. No big deal. The local private service, http://www.acadian.com/ , has had GPS tracking for years. It's worked so well that they branched it off to a fee based service for any interested business, http://www.mobile-monitoring.com/home.html . Personally I use a ham radio GPS tracking system, http://www.aprs.net/ , for tracking and short text messaging. Several places can track ham operators using this system. For instance, you can find my car by going to http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/find.cgi?call=kc5sas . That and other sites will keep a history of where I've traveled. For instance by going to- http://www.jfindu.net/track.asp?call=KC5SA...=400&type=3 you will see my commute between my home south of Baton Rouge to my work just west of New Orleans as well as anywhere else I may have traveled in the past 48 hours. There are thousands of people using this type of system and java based sites like http://www.aprsfl.net/javaprs.html and http://www.aprs-is.net/javalive.htm allow anyone to zoom in or out to see the many stations transmitting data such as weather conditions, speed or direction of travel.
  20. I interviewed with them today in Baton Rouge, took the multi choice aptitude tests and pee'd in a cup at the clinic. Now I wait for about 5 days for word if they want me back for further interviews, lift test and physical.
  21. I work at a Steel mill. Many of the injuries I am called to end up being burns. Most are minor but about once a month we get a bad one. I will never get used to the smell of burned hair no matter how many times I am exposed to it. It just lingers. Our protocal is to cool, dress with dry dressings and transport either to the Company off site clinic or local ER based on orders from the on call physician. Burn cream isn't applied until the employee has returned to work and reports to the facility clinic where we apply the cream and fresh bandages at the start of each shift or before they go home after shift.
  22. My current job doesn't require EVOC. My previous job, city fire department, didn't require it but I attended 2 day training with a Mutual Aid Department on my off days. Some good training there. My thoughts? I pushed our Fire Department to have EVOC training at least for the new hires. No luck. The Officers, Chief, had the attitude that if you can drive a car or pickup truck you can drive a 20 foot long truck carrying 1000 gallons of water and a ton of equiptment. I don't work there anymore. I think it should be a yearly class and certification.
  23. The Navy seems to have a pretty good medic/corpman program. I have a buddy who did 6 years as a corpsman. Never spent a day on ships. He was always assigned to navy bases stateside. He got lots of good training and certifications while in the Navy. After getting his discharge, he moved to Mississippi and challanged the RN license exam. Passed it with no problem. He's now working full time as an RN in a hospital outside of New Orleans. He works part time at a hospital in Baton Rouge also. Six years in the Navy paid off well for him.
  24. I'm not praying with or baptising anyone. I'll get my atheist butt out there and treat anyone who crosses my path per my protocals but nowhere in my training or licensing did I become a priest. I won't stop the patient from praying their eyes out but I'm not getting involved. Steve EMT/Security Atheists unite- Atheist Network http://www.atheistnetwork.com
