  1. Congratulations to both of you, I am most definitely jealous.
  2. Some days I am reminded just how cool it is to be a Texan. The United Nations has recieved a hospitality letter from the Texas Attorney general. Welcome to Texas Boys, we will leave the light on for you .... just not at the polling places. http://www.ktrh.com/cc-common/news/sections/newsarticle.html?feed=121300&article=10518790
  3. Many people never really understand the lasting effects of our actions. The small things that we do can impact others in great ways. Some people impact the world with evil and should most definitely be punished. Others spend their life doing good. We often think that bullying is an adolescent problem, I would propose that it is a human problem that crosses age, gender and occupation. Many of us, if not all of us, know adults that have left jobs or even changed careers because they were bullied in the work place. We call it something else; hazing, fish week or breaking in the probies, but at it's root it is the same thing. It is just a pack of individuals abusing another simply because there is evil in their heart. This story is sad and horrible but is not isolated. Every person should endeavor to stop abusive behavior in the world.
  4. It is so sad that people believe enabling is the same as loving.
  5. For several years now I have doubted the wisdom of parents letting their girl children be catapulted into the air, to be caught by other girl children. Each of these maneuvers are performed without head gear, pads, safety harness, lainards. Maybe blonds aren't actually born that way, just dropped on their head while cheerleading.
  6. I attended a small child that was run over on the beach a couple of years ago. The kid sunk in the sand and had no injuries. We transported him with the driver that ran him over because the other drunks on the beach lynched him. Funny how things work out. http://www.jems.com/article/news/florida-woman-run-over-while-sunbathing
  7. I may never do CPR again, you know, We wouldn't want the zombies to take over the world.
  8. I have often wondered about that, How do people know? I like to believe that God gives them the chance to crystallize things that are really important, such as spending those last moments with people they love. A little measure of grace, a chance for loved ones to participate in their departure, to just be there. Prayers and condolences to you and your family. May you find peace and comfort in your time of loss.
  9. I'll be quick, you won't feel a thing.
  10. Sorry Bro .I simply could not resist, and you are right, it is not funny, it is hilarious!!!
  11. Thanks, I will get to that module one of these days.
  12. Once, in another life, an evil twin I used to have, who I have since killed, was trying to buy a gun at a store that was being shut down by the ATF. There were guys 5 deep at the counter. After a while asking to see a gun without success, I asked the girl behind the counter who had her keys on a chain and a Buck knife on her belt "Would you let me see that 12 ga hon?" I was instantly chastised with a very loud "Don't call me hon". Everyone at the counter goes silent. My evil twin responds " I am sorry, could I see that 12 ga? .... sugar? She seemed to mind less after I made a sizable purchase. The lesson was most definitely that people should be called by their name when possible.
  13. I have never actually placed an IO. It is still outside my current protocols but had convinced myself that tibial access was for pediatric patients below the age of two and adult access is in the sternum. So tell me how far in the ditch that idea is.
  14. The obvious question would be. Why would they not inform parents that the baby is dead and explore the recovery operation options. I saw a lot of forceps a while ago and you are right. It takes a lot of force to rip a head off.
  15. I think you are on to something. I have to fight the urge to hire good looking people that are equally qualified as less attractive ones. I am aware of this tendency. When you consider ethnic beauty that is an entirely different conversation. Ethnicity displaces the beauty thresholds. A person that is considered beautiful among their culture might be considered not so in a different culture and vice versa.
  16. I was privy to a similar case many years ago. The baby's shoulders became lodged in the birth canal. The Dr. cut the symphysis pubis and successfully delivered the baby, There are better ways than pulling it's head off. The article seems to indicate positive vascular pressure when the head came off as evidenced by squirting. It is weird that they stuffed the head back into the birth canal. Can you imagine the horror?
  17. I don't know if the premise of being prepared predisposes a person to violent situations. I would think the opposite in many instances is true. When I have the possibility of lethal force, most arguments loose their importance. I would believe that the better trained, equipped and prepared one is, makes it all that easier to walk away from conflict. This could stem from a non violent nature and be totally in the ditch but I hope not.
  18. Insulin shock is frequently not recognized in traffic stops. It might help if it is called by it's name. I hope the victim does well and LE are given additional training on recognizing Insulin Shock and Diabetic Coma.
  19. My inner redneck is loving this. It would have been better if he shot his balloon instead. You know that the guy that tied balloons to his lawn chair and shot them to come back down is sitting at home saying "That was my idea!" while he spills beer on his lap.
  20. Could air have tracked the esophagus through the esophageal hiatus. I am unclear of the exact mechanism.
  21. Yep, a colonoscopy can definitely make your neck swell.
  22. In addition to what has already been mentioned I would wonder about a right MI, pleuracy, possibly liver disease contributing to portal vascular disease or arterial dissetion. Vitals? JVD? Edema? Hx? Are his radial pulses bilaterally equal? Bilateral Blood Pressures? ECG?
  23. I am generally uncomfortable taking culinary gratuities from patients but do it every time. In the culture I live in it would be considered belittling to the giver to not receive their gift. Often we are offered bananas, mangoes or what ever fruit is in season. Water on a hot scene is not a problem. In fact I have asked for a drink on many occasions when It is needed and the on scene time is prolonged. If we are working rescues that extend beyond mealtimes, communities will often bring us lunch which must be received for the same reason mentioned above. I have never abandoned my post to receive a gratuity and would frown on anyone who did.
