  1. What is greater than God, more evil than the devil, the poor have it, the rich don't and if you eat it you will die ? answer: Nothing
  2. One of my classmates.. her husband told her that if she went to paramedic school, he would file for divorce. She did and he did. She flunked out 2 months later.
  3. Medical school requires you to have an undergraduate degree with prerequisites in chemisty, biology, etc. etc. Personally, I think paramedic school should have a minumum of 1 year anatomy and physiology before you get in. I don't think that EMT-B is enough as a prerequisite but at least its something.
  4. I'm confused... you mean there are states that don't require an active EMT license (Basic or Intermediate) to get into paramedic school ? Here in Wisconsin that is a prerequisite. It tends to weed out people who can't handle school. I also think that an "open book" test has got to be a joke... whats it test ? that you can read ?
  5. Gloat away man... you have earned it. Congrats!
  6. Don't underestimate self study. I picked up both anatomy and physiology coloring books this summer, 2 or 3 months before paramedic school started. It was great because I had a grasp of the concepts and really good recall of the terminology before class. It helped me a great deal. Good luck.
  7. that was a definate 8 man.....
  8. practice with a popsicle stick taped to the radial aspect of your left wrist... helped me... Good luck
  9. judgement call.. you did the right thing... the patient survived. What is the ALS team trying to accomplish ? Do you have a history with them ?
  10. The arriving medic comes across as a lazy sob that didnt want to do the work of the extrication. I think you did the right thing. You were looking after your patient.
  11. altered mental status due to lack of perfusion.... cant understand why the ED couldnt treat him
  12. I was out of commission for 8 months due to an acl reconstruction. It sucked big time. It does come back, but not easily. You have to want it. The skills are there - maybe not quite as quick but if they were good before they will be there. What goes is your confidence and that is not a bad thing. Things that you didnt even think about before you think about now. Dont let an injury stop you. If you want it, you can have it back. Good luck.
  13. at some point, preferably after your assessment, you know you are going to have to tube him.....
  14. Slapping someone to assess level of consciousness is incorrect. I think I would have punched her too....
  15. I'm with Dust on the white.... its says health professional... than maybe the profession will upgrade our education, etc. for entry into the field...

    COPD?

I don't think you missed anything.. sounds like acute inflammation of the bronchi - probably in response to the cig... lady needs to QUIT SMOKING - and long term treatment with a steroidal anti-flammatory... nothing for pre-hospital care...
  20. Stupid stupid stupid stupid.... and downright negligent as well... extreme whackerism.. IMHO
  21. Great job... In Wisconsin, EMT-B's are allowed to administer EPI with medical control approval. Its in our protocols and within our scope of practice. Now before you all get on me about how inadequate my training is to administer this I start paramedic school on the 20th of next month... Nevertheless, the situation as described is a save in my book.
  22. Absolutely hilarious.. loved it... thanks for the post
  23. I am starting paramedic school on August 20th- I have the physiology and the anatomy coloring books... they absolutely rock... I can't believe I lived this long so ignorant.. :? good luck with the studying.
  24. I would think the voltage of a car battery (around 15 or so) is WAAAAAAAAAAY too low ... I think defibs need around 200....
  25. I spent 25 years in systems consulting. About 4 years ago my husband got very sick. It was one blow after another in terms of chronic and/or life changing conditions. I handled it all. Then, 2 days after we got home from the hospital he started throwing up blood. His medical care was a 2 hour drive away and I just lost it... I didn't know what to do. It was one of the worst feelings I've ever had. I took a leave of absence from my consulting business to take care of him and never went back. I got my EMT-B license a year and a half ago because it was a hoop I had to jump thru to get to paramedic school. I was on a waiting list for a year and a half and am starting on August 20th. Its something I really want to do, if for nothing else than the knowledge. I hope to get out there and start helping people in a real and meaningful way.
