I feel like I'm in some geriatric club. Don't let age hold you back...you are truly as young as you feel. I finished paramedic school at the age of 45 and I now work a 48/96 shift. Even I amaze myself on the long hours at times. Welcome to the city! (What's with the screen name "0331"?

TWO OLD MEN DECIDE THEY ARE CLOSE TO THEIR LAST DAYS AND DECIDE TO HAVE A LAST NIGHT ON THE TOWN. AFTER A FEW DRINKS, THEY END UP AT THE LOCAL BROTHEL THE MADAM TAKES ONE LOOK AT THE TWO OLD GEEZERS AND WHISPERS TO HER MANAGER, 'GO UP TO THE FIRST TWO BEDROOMS AND PUT AN INFLATED DOLL IN EACH BED. THESE TWO ARE SO OLD AND DRUNK, I'M NOT WASTING TWO OF MY GIRLS ON THEM. THEY WON'T KNOW THE DIFFERENCE.' THE MANAGER DOES AS HE IS TOLD AND THE TWO OLD MEN GO UPSTAIRS AND TAKE CARE OF THEIR BUSINESS.. AS THEY ARE WALKING HOME THE FIRST MAN SAYS, 'YOU KNOW, I THINK MY GIRL WAS DEAD!' 'DEAD?' SAYS HIS FRIEND, 'WHY DO YOU SAY THAT?' 'WELL, SHE NEVER MOVED OR MADE A SOUND ALL THE TIME I WAS LOVING HER.' HIS FRIEND SAYS, 'COULD BE WORSE I THINK MINE WAS A WITCH.' 'A WITCH ??. . WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU SAY THAT?' 'WELL, I WAS MAKING LOVE TO HER, KISSING HER ON THE NECK, AND I GAVE HER A LITTLE BITE, THEN SHE FARTED AND FLEW OUT THE WINDOW..... TOOK MY TEETH WITH HER!'

There. I am not pitching a tantrum, just wondered why my avatar is being questioned ? I believe someone on here has a "Congressman Weiner" avatar, I have not seen anyone ask if he is a child molester, or why he feels the need to use that avatar ? To say that my avatar must reflect every view or opinon that I have is silly. The fact that we are even discussing avatars is silly.

What I would give to have this conversation with a gay person that could actually fathom the idea that they might possibly be wrong on any given point. The dialog is all constipated because there is so little give and take... Crotchity says, "You've never had sex with a black angus so obviously you're a bigot!" Flaming says, "You've never sucked a dick so obviously you hate fags!" They both say, "I was once looked at sideways at the mall, so I'm repressed! I should be given....something! And it should be free! And......it should come with an apology!" ("From Who?" "From anyone that is not me! Everyone owes me stuff because I've been unhappy!" " " What about other people that have been unhappy too?" "Fuck them! They're repressors! They deserve to suffer! In fact that guy over there? He's suffering because I stomped on his neck! But it's ok....it made me happy...AND HE'S a FUCKING REPRESSOR!" Neither of them is in love with the idea of equality. Neither wants a dialog that will move all people forward. They are both in love with hate. And they are both in love with their victim status. And that, in my opinion is the problem.... I truly wanted to give flaming a chance, but he's not looking for a chance, he's looking to spread his anger, and unhappiness. He's not looking for help to make the world stronger and kinder, he's looking for a crowd to attack, to attempt to maim with passive aggressiveness. Neither are different really than white supremacists, or wild dogs. They're not looking to get better because they've become to much in love with attacking and trying to cause fear. Each is truly the worst enemy to the groups that they claim to represent. And you know what really breaks my heart? They know it. They are both plenty smart enough to know it, but they don't care. And for the record? The word is nigger. It's impossible to have mature, clear, in depth conversations when we use the abbreviations of 4th graders. JUST FINISHED EMT-B CLASS, NREMT TEST HOPEFULLY IN THE NEXT 7-10 DAYS. THIS HAS BEEN A TOTAL MID-LIFE CAREER CHANGE FOR ME AND I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO THE CHALLENGES THAT ARE AHEAD. I AM ALMOST 50 YRS OLD, TALKED TO AS MANY PEOPLE IN THE FIELD OF EMS AS I COULD BEFORE I STARTED CLASS. WHILE I DID WELL IN THE CLASS ROOM AND THE PRACTICALS I REALIZE THERE IS NO TEST MORE IMPORTANT THAN HANDS-ON EXP. IN THE REAL WORLD. ANY THOUGHTS OR ADVICE APPRECIATED, THANK YOU. BE SAFE.

Ditto....am 49, over the course of 31 yrs was a milk man, a beer man, and owned a donut shop. Talk about diversity. How i wound up here.. not quite sure. Finished my EMT cert. in July, start with EMSA Tulsa,Ok. on 10/03. Looking forward to an exciting ride and view my age as only a plus. Jake's on the money, great site, great info', good luck.

You may be proud of who or what you are, but is it REALLY necessary to make it your 'defining quality'? How many avatars do you see that proclaim other's pride in being (insert reason here)? Also, I noticed that your 'test' was pretty slanted against being classified as anything BUT homophobic and intolerant.....how very classy! If people want words like 'the N-word' to no longer be used, it MUST be unilateral, not just 'wrong' for 'some people' and not for others... The whole double standards thing needs to stop. There are those who profess that they are yearning for acceptance/equality/respect, but are also NOT offering those same attributes; this makes them appear as hypocrites and their entire quest loses credibility... You want respect/equality/acceptance? You've got to be willing to give it as well! *Edited to correct a glaring spelling error.

I currently teach in Alaska as part of a technical prep school.. It is for high school students who have the chance to go to the prep school part time and get real hands on skills and working knowledge of the industry to see if it is the field they want to persue. Being that they are high school kids, I get the typical lazy, unsure and disrespectful students. They have only 1 option in my class that I make very clear the first day; you will see things you can't unsee. You will deal with death and dismemberment ( you must learn very quickly to get over it!) if you act in a way that I feel is a harm to your future patients or a disgrace to the EMS profession, you will not test to be an EMT! Usually I lose a few students that way, but it helps weed out the ones I wouldn't want working on me or my family members anyways.. As an educator for the school district I have a curriculum I must follow along with the EMT guidelines for my state, so there is a lot of information and way beyond the 120hours required to test. My EMT experience was different and I still wish there was more to it! Better clarification on why, not so much what! Anyways.. Sorry for rambling! I just love what I do and want to produce great, confident and professional future EMTs

Hey man. There are several folks here who got into the EMS game later in life. Myself, I was 44 when I began my EMS career and I've been a paramedic for almost 4 of the last 6 years. Approaching my 51st birthday, I am now doing Critical Care transport. As much as I THOUGHT I knew as a medic, there is a lot more to this game. I can't give you to much help on the tactical medic gig. It just wasn't my thing. Welcome to the site bro'! There is a wealth of information here, yours for the asking.
