I am NOT an EMT

Thank you. Someone else who realizes where all this is going.

Everyone else is missing the point. But don't worry, I am sure that you all will figure out the point of things before you die from the seriousness.

I'm done with this thread. :banghead:

bbbreamer: You posted a silly "My husband/wife is not an emt" thing and you got some alternate points of view. I became concerned about your working conditions as did others on here. We offered our sympathies and understanding. If your working conditions are as you described them, you have major problems.

If you are getting an attitude, use it on the powers that make you work those 96 hour weeks not potential friends here.

The trouble is I am not off duty. To balence out the 96hrs straight that I work, I am allowed to go home when on duty instead of staying in the miniscule bunkroom all day and night. My husband doesn't complain about the radio mostly because he has to put up with it to have me at home. Fair enough trade off. As for being off-duty? That is three days a week. The reason I do monitor the radio on my days off is I am a Paramedic in an extremely rural BLS system, and when I am off it is a double basic truck. I am the only ALS provider around. So when the call comes out for the 4yr old who is choking, I go because the basics can't scope the pt and I can if needed. We are a minimum of 30mi/30min from the nearest hosp. at 90mi/hr. There are a lot of people who would die before they got there without certain ALS interventions. THAT is why I often monitor the radio on my days off.

JPINFV: Thank you for correcting the spelling of HIPAA. I never could spell very well. And it isn't like I am saying this is the hardest job in the world for S/O to deal with. I am just giving them credit. Lighten up. Yes you run into disease and long hours everywhere. But Secerataries, Lawyers, Phone Operaters all have less opportunity than we do to bring home the flu, Hepatitis, AIDS, TB, and many other things. That is all I was pointing out.

ASYSIN2LEADS: Actually, around here, if I give anymore details than CP/O2/IV, my husband will know who I am talking about. He hears the radio and the directions, and we know almost everyone around here. So I can't actually say anything because he WILL know who I am talking about. Small town/rural, you know how it goes.

hmm ... whats the benefit to working "96hours straight" in a non-als system where you are the only medic i assume you own the company cuz if your the only medic you must be god ... i dunno how u let a basic supervise you.

now in a rare assumption of common sense that your boss actually has more training then you (hell who woulda thought of that)

why not have them go on calls when you are "sleeping" or "off" now if this is not possible ... has anyone thought about hiring another medic ? im quite certain another medic can be found if the money is right. and if your working 96hrs minimum and you cut to 40 like a normal person they can easily hire another medic plus gain more profit, in sense hiring another medic and reducing your hours is a profit for them.

as far as the health insurance portability and accountability act of 1996 it simply says you cannnot give personal info ... if you give generic info and ur spouse figures it out well he would make a great detective, but that is not against the act. simply do not give out name address or other simple info.giving your basic hospital run off as long as it doesnt include med history, and your basic "sample" and "opqrsti" question answers ex: i had a 57yr old male pt in a mvc no loc aox3 laseration to the head bla bla bla bla bla bla is not against the act. and if the details of the info would let your spouse figure it out and you really dont want to go against HIPAA in any way shape or form or even come close, im sure oklahoma has some sort of CISD, or peer support and if not in your 3 days off you might want to look into getting a therapist to help aleviate your stress.

most of what i just stated is rather "anal" as most would say and very well .. not the nicest way to say things, but none of your posts have made much sense nor are they consistent with normalcy, enjoy

If I may (and even if I am not allowed), I must mention that when I listen to the scanner when off duty, I'm not listening because I have to, I'm listening because I WANT to. I am a radio hobbyist, subcategory "Scannist".

Besides, I also listen to my local division of the NYPD, my borough frequency of the FDNY, J F Kennedy International Airport's control tower, and the nearest precincts of the Nassau County PD.

While programed in, and not usually listened to on a regular basis, I also have most, if not all, NYPD divisions, several NYPD specialty units, all 5 boroughs (counties) and "Citywide" of the FDNY, likewise the Nassau County PD, the volunteer fire departments of Nassau County, the New York Power Authority (during a blackout, when is the juice coming back on?), the US Secret Service, the FBI, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the Nuclear Emergency Search Team (if I hear anything on those channels, I'm digging a hole in which to hide, and pull it in after me), and the US Coast Guard.

If the Federal agencies have anything heavy going on, it will probably be a scrambled or encrypted signal, which I might pick up, but not be able to hear, as it will probably seem like noise on my radios.

My radios have an off switch. I do know how to use it, and frequently do.
