  1. I'll just "armchair quarterback", here. Is there some way to jury--rig some heavy water pumps, like a fire engine company, to pull water out of the waterway that seems to be alongside the distressed reactors, and figure out some way to vent the hydrogen gas off harmlessly? Whoever the volunteers remaining behind to try and stop the meltdown are, they know they are dead men walking. Their names will be remembered, in Japan, and the rest of the world, if the attempt is successful. I join the world in wishing them that success.
  2. I will answer a question about if I am racist or not: I don't really know. I know I have had moments when comments I have made (not on this venue) due to my lack of knowledge might make me seem racist, but if someone takes me aside, and tells me (not beat me for that lack of knowledge) that I inadvertently said something that hurt them, I apologise, and try not to repeat the error. Crotchety, by admitting any errors I may have made, and a willingness to try and correct them, does that at least lessen my being a racist, as opposed to one who refuses to change their ways at all? I am also somewhat aware of history. The "Tuskegee Airmen" were an attempt by the US Army Air Corps to prove that Blacks couldn't learn to operate the hi-tech fighter aircraft of the era. While the fliers proved them wrong, it is my understanding that the White officers in charge of them did something akin to "cooking the books" to attempt to prove their erroneous point. It is also my understanding that 2 things happened when they flew against the German Stukas and Messerschmidts, one, that they flew so well, they succeeded in aerial dogfights, and the second is, the German pilots, in order to hold to their racial purity beliefs, refused to fly against "an inferior race".
  3. For sex, I wrote, "Yes, please?" Had to rewrite mine, too. Before dating Lady J, I never felt attracted to any particular black or Chinese woman, and none of them seemed interested in me. Besides, they were already married, or had boyfriends, and in a few cases, they had girlfriends to exclusion of anyone else. On the FYI, my hyphenate is American born of German-Polish-Russian background reform movement Jew, Lady J's is American born of Sicilian-Italian background Roman Catholic. Racist?
  4. Don't sweat it. When I don't know an acronym, I usually ask. It is, however a reason I ask all here to avoid acronyms, as what might be common usage by you, might be totally unknown by me, and vise-versa. It's a pet peeve of mine (with an imitation leopard skin collar!).
  5. When I started, I used to ask about discolorations in stool, but stopped when almost all I asked responded with some variant of "why would I be looking at THAT for anything?"
  6. I don't know about this. Rather folks suspect one is insane, than do an action to confirm it. I also admit that being certifiably insane is sometimes a prerequisite for getting a job in EMS!
  7. I give an example: When in Junior High School, I was one of 5 Tenors in the chorus who was always used by the instructor to demonstrate how a particular line was supposed to have been sung. I was no star student in almost anything else except music. We had a performance for the school, and the parents, the only such performance for that year, and some @#$%^&*()+=*&^%$# cut my name off the program, which I only discovered less than a half hour before "showtime". Mine was the only name excluded from the program, of some 200+ kids, as someone caught the missing names of the others, and had rubber stamps made to add the missing to the program. My one piece of evidence of where I did good, and it never came to fruition. The teacher raised my final grade for the year 2 points as a compensation, as he rechecked the master list the day after the performance to find someone had drawn a line through my name! Even that drew a bit of criticism, as another student held it against me that by the 2 point raise, she lost out having the highest final grade in Music in the school, as she had a 99, and I was given a 100. Attitude has changed, on a national basis. At least now, both the educators and the psychologists agree that words can sometimes have even more impact than being hit with a baseball bat.
  8. My view is, whoever said that "Sticks and stones might break my bones, but words will never harm me" must have been home schooled. Bullies don't need a specific reason to bully any particular individual. While obviously intended as silliness, the episode of "The Simpsons" implying that those who get bullied put out Pheromones that attract bullies might actually be the case. Some weakness is perceived by a bully, and amplified on. Showing that fight reminds me of an "almost" in my own case. I presume most here have heard the old story of the boy who got blitz-attacked from behind, beaten severely, and HE is the one gets suspended in school for fighting. At least nowadays, teachers are leaving the "Sticks and stones" attitude in the dust, where it should have been left before I attended grade school. I was one of those people attacked by the cliques and the "Heathers", as I wasn't either a "jock," or an intellectual (being the intellectual I profess to be now must have been late in starting).
  9. A zot here. What is ZOT? Perhaps I know of this in a different wording. Pleasae advise.
  10. Face it, black cloud days are a part of EMS, with my belief that the LEOs and Fire Fighters have their days like that, too. I used to have a captain in the NYC HHC EMS EMD, who seemed to always have at least one major Multi-Casualty Incident per tour occur, sometimes more than one, sometimes several at the same time. Someone bought him a name tag saying "Captain Blackcloud (set me back about $4 and change).
  11. Opportunity never presented. All the good lookers were already taken.
  12. When OLMC is contacted, no matter what the transport decision ends up being, the contact is documented on the call report, with the doctor's ID number on that call report. I know they ask for information from the crews, as to badge numbers, unit radio ID, and the call report's number. If the patient is to go into "protective custody", the NYPD does almost everything but move the carry chair or stretcher.
  13. Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, or should I say Crotchitymedic1986, Crotchitymedic1986, Crotchitymedic1986! As for dating outside my own "group", I could have dated any woman I pleased, white, black, hispanic, oriental, or what have you. I just didn't please any of them! Aside from that old joke, I did date a Navajo "Native American" girl, even asked her to marry me, only to get the dreaded "Let's just be friends" speech. I will point out that, as she was adopted by a white, Jewish family, she didn't know she was Navajo until she was about 43 years old, and we had dated while we were teenagers into our early 20s (Complicated story. Best read her autobiography, "Looking for Lost Bird", by Yvette Melanson. I am not mentioned in the book, but then, she barely mentions her first husband in the book, either). More directly to the subject, does anyone recall the "Drew Carey Show" episode, where racial and sex discrimination was discussed? They had to "act out" similar scenarios, and it was also the last episode where the Scotsman "boss" was seen. (The Scotsman actor now has a late night TV show following David Letterman, on CBS)
  14. You know you are going to have a bad day in EMS when you hear, over your scanner, the airport control tower reporting a plane "missing" and that they see smoke, and you hear PD and FD responding to a heavy fire condition at the local school.
  15. WHEARAS each EMT City member is from different jurisdictions, and WHEARAS each jurisdiction has different protocols and practices, and WHEARAS laws of who must report what to the "authorities" are as varied as the jurisdictions we come from, and WHEARAS every member of the City follows their local protocols and practices when it comes to making such reports as required (I hope I am correct on that one), then RESOLVED: All required to make such reports will make them, and those not so required will not make them.
  16. The sensei at my girlfriend's dojo knows I practiced what is regarded as the oldest means of self defence:
  17. Many of youze guyz know I am on a bunch of mailing lists. I am also a member of both Costco and B.J's Buyer's Clubs. For those not familier with these names, they are so-called "Big Box" stores, where you can purchase a bunch of stuff at reduced rates. In food, for the cost of 2 pounds in separate packages, you can buy 5 pounds of the food, but in one big box. It makes sense if buying for a soup kitchen feeding the homeless, or the head cook feeding the Third Armored Division. I have purchased breakfast cereal there. The last couple of ounces went stale, after all, it's just Me and Momma B in the house. I have also bought AA, AAA, C, and D sized batteries, 40 count per package, for the electric toothbrush, Police scanners, GMRS radios, flashlights, and the wireless mice for both of my computers. My Garmin Nuvi GPS came from Costco, $70 less than Radio Shack. However... would you spend admittedly less than at a medical supplyt firm to get a Philips Heartstart from B.J's? $1,267.99, after instant rebate with coupon, for this defibrillator in carry case, with a Sonicare electric toothbrush as a bonus, thrown in for good measure. At B.J's?
  18. I thought some of the responsibilities were, for any vehicles stored in bays, that the vehicle operator's job included making sure the vehicle clears the doors of the bay, and the power charger cord is disconnected?
  19. White shows dirt and other contaminints, both biological and other particulate, and is, in some oriental cultures, the rfepresentative color of death, much as black is the representative color of death in US and UK countries. The pullover knit shirts used in "summer uniform" by the FDNY were never my "thang". I preferred the older 7 button "military" style, as I felt it looked somewhat more professional, plus, I use the shirt pockets. The knits don't have pockets. Yes, I know it makes me look a bit more like our FF and LEO brothers and sisters, but, to me, the EMT patch on my right shoulder is sometimes more important than the agency patch on the left.
  20. I guess I missed you, AGAIN (!) at the Queens County St. Patricks Day Parade this year. Good luck with the new book.
  21. There is no correct answer. There must, however, be "uniformity", as all in the service should look alike, at least to the point of public recognition by the attire worn.
  22. By NY State standards, protocols, and Law, it is a crime: Assault. The offence gets reported, as, how many other patients/NH Residents have been assaulted by the same person? Depending on how you relate with your own family, would you like your parents, or grandparents, slapped around, or possibly beaten to the point of death?
  23. Shanana, you posted the original in December of 2010. How did you make out on the test?
