  1. Lawyer warning devices now required for US ambulances The device issues both a visible and audible warning By EMS1 Staff WASHINGTON — In a mediated settlement to avoid litigation, the American Bar Association (ABA) and the Department of Transportation (DOT) agreed to require lawyer warning devices on all United States ambulances. Cecil Allen, spokesperson for the ABA, said, "We the officers and directors of the ABA, are pleased with the agreement. We are saddened that 74 of our colleagues have been backed over by ambulances or ran into the rear of ambulances which quickly stopped." The device issues both a visible and audible warning when the ambulance transmission is placed in reverse or when the braking forces exceed a pre-determined level. Philadelphia personal injury attorney Steve Miffin said, "It is about time this dangerous and overtly egregious situation has come to an end. I feel the ambulance manufacturers have been capricious in their conduct toward members of the bar. "The ability to chase an ambulance is clearly granted by the founding fathers in the first, fourth and fourteenth amendments to the United States Constitution. "If my memory serves me correctly, the ability of properly licensed attorneys to chases ambulances has been recorded in the Bible, the Koran, the Torah, the Book of Morman, and in selected Native-American spiritual writings. "It is as American as Thanksgiving and apple pie — or is that cherry pie — regardless, one of the fruit pies." The DOT has assured the ABA that devices should be on all ambulances by this day in 2012 if funding becomes available.
  2. New EMT so also be gentle with me. (Also a basic so there is little I can do.) With his body temperature at 95 F he needs those wet clothes off and needs to be warmed up. High con O2 via non rebreather mask should be applied. Based on a shortened leg that is twisted and considering MOI it could be a fractured femur. If this not an open fracture it should be safe to try and apply gentle traction to regain a pulse to the extremity. and to alleviate some of the pain he might be in use a traction splint to straighten the leg out. nothing I can do for his EKG unless he goes into V-FIB or cardiac arrest. Also if pain is in his abdomen and blood in his urine it would also be nice to use an ultrasound to determine if he has any abdominal bleeding and where it is coming from. My thinking is he could possibly have a lacerated spleen which in that case he would need blood transfusions and a operating table. Also in regards to his breathing x-ray would be great to check for pneuo-hemo thorax and have a chest decompression done (although I cant do it)
  3. Pardon my poor usage of that acronym. I did not realize it had several meanings. I was thinking of refusal of transport. But from my perspective refusal of treatment is if the patient does not want any treatments but might want to go the hospital ( like taking vitals) and refusal of transport a patient allows treatment but doesnt want to go to the hospital. However my perspective of the two could have entirely different definitions in the law books.
  4. Well Im not sure where this post would go so I thought I'd try here. The story goes a Medic/owner of a ambulance company who runs 911 in my hometown saw a post I put on facebook and perceived it as bashing his service and found a friend of mine who worked in his volunteer fire department a while back and sent a message to him to relay a message to me to back off. After I received the message I looked on my facebook for anything that could be taken that way and have found nothing. I cant get a way to communicate with the guy directly so I relayed through my friend to give him my number so we can discuss this and settle any problems and its been two weeks and ive received nothing from that medic. I want to settle this dispute with him because Ive had problems with him since ive been in highschool working as ground support with a competing company that wants the 911 contract. Is their any way I can get this small town medic off my case either legally or personally while not endangering my certification?
  5. Sorry for such a long wait. I had a really good first three days at work. I got to also be lead medic on a 1 1/2 hour transfer. Although I do wonder when will this anxiousness subside and when I will feel comfortable in what im doing because their are times i'm somewhat squeamish in doing things such as checking a things for blood in stools with a female patients (thank god I had another medic who wasnt), Its not like I wont do it if no one else will but I dont want to be like that. I also got to do my first report and narrative with ALL the info (my clinicals would not allow me to fill out things such as patient name, rig number, code priority, time dispatched, etc, etc.)
  6. ABC's check vitals assist ventilations as necessary or place on high flow high con O2 narcan probably wouldnt be a bad idea Four lead EKG and run a strip to check for cardiac issues. Have a line ready to go in case he codes LOAD and GO have LE accompany you in the back enroute in case the patient becomes violent
  7. My sister and I were sitting around the house a week ago and a interesting question came up which I didnt know the answer to. Should 911 be dispatched to the house can she refuse transport. The reason why I ask is in texas in some legal aspects she is an adult even though she is 17. However does that also include the capablility of ROT.
  8. Go to Barnes and noble. They should have a section for NREMT prep guides (although very small list for EMT though). As far as online. I dont know of any.
  9. What is the difference between a king and a combi. Are they both dual lumen?
  10. i have a pair of the waterproof ultralites from bates. very comfortable during the winter but hotter than heck during the summer months.
  11. 36 hours till first shift. oh yay

  12. Im starting my very first shift as an EMT-B with a ground transport in Odessa Texas. Im nervous and yet excited to what the EMS gods have in store for me ("or lack of" as ive learned in my clinicals) ive noticed that some of you ladies and gentleman on this forum have been in EMS for 20+ years and I would like to ask for your words of wisdom of what I can do to prepare myself to be the best EMT I can be but prepeare myself for whatever this world wants to throw at me. Also I would like to point out Im also the youngest emt-B's in the company and perhaps this region of texas being only 18 and not turning 19 till april. So not only am I short on EMS experience im also short on life experience.
