1. Even as fickle as I am when it comes to my next job, there is no decision to be made. I know what I would do based on what you said. However, you must make your own decision and based on what you wrote, I think you already have... Good Luck!
2. I agree Rid. I am trying to find it, but I remember this same story from several years ago. I am wondering why they are rehashing it. May be a different study, but the point they are trying to prove is the same. If I am not mistaken, it was USA Today that printed the original one as well.
3. Who the hell is Dustdevil??? Some Newbie?? Geez, good riddance I say...... Just kidding dude...you know we will think of you often and everyone is acting as if this is the last time we will talk to you. I know better than that. You will be on every night or day, since the clock is screwed up over there but anyways there is no way in hell they could tolerate you in person on a daily basis, so we know you will have to escape to this site to be your usual cantankerous self.
4. If you properly immobilize a pt, you should be able to stand them up, flip em over, whatever and they should not move. Cross the chest, cross the pelvis, across and under the feet = no movement. I hate the national standard that still shows and accepts 3 horizontal straps...how the hell does this immoblize someone???
5. Oh ok, I didn't know it was a mistake...just asked for clarification...that's all. Just kidding, I make mistakes all the time, but sometimes they are so damn funny, they need to be pointed out so that all may enjoy.
6. A NEMO??? As in the friendly clown fish???
7. Dustdevil is correct. As you guys are aware, I just returned from a location where I worked alongside representatives from many different branches of the military and US govt. I worked and trained alongside some SEALS and 18Deltas. The ones that I was able to hang with and make conversation did indeed have their National Registry status. I provided a couple of them with the requirements to maintain it as they were planning/preparing for a civilian role in the near future. They informed me that they were provided their NR status through the military, pretty standard route. In case you didn't know, all SEALS are medics as well( at least that is what they told me, may be varying levels but they claim that).
8. I WANT ONE!!! Had to lift the link so you could see the pictures.... http://www.defrance.org/artman/publish/article_1586.shtml 12m long Mercedes Bus-Based Ambulance by The Stuttgart Fire Brigade has a new toy: a Mercedes-Benz Citaro urban bus-turned ambulance. Ze Germans have it slated for use in the event of a major catastrophe. The details: This two-axle bus - measuring 12 m long and 2.55 m wide - was developed with the help of input from vastly experienced experts who work for the Stuttgart Fire Brigade and fire rescue services. So the new Citaro large-capacity emergency ambulance is not merely a means of transport for up to 15 casualties. With five treatment areas including beds for the seriously injured and ten seats for treating people with minor injuries, it is a fully-equipped mobile treatment room for moderately severe casualties, which can also be used as a mobile medical centre at major events or for transporting extremely heavy patients. The vehicle is part of the emergency response plan put in place for this year's World Cup in football and was funded by the Ministry of the Interior for Baden-Württemberg. As well as the powerful convector heaters, the reinforced sidewalls contain built-in mounting rails for two DIN-standard stretchers with vacuum mattresses - one above the other - in the front section of the bus. When not in use, they can be folded out of the way and attached securely to the sidewall. Two additional Stryker stretchers are located directly above the rear wheel arches. There is also a special heavy-duty stretcher equipped with AMF fastening straps to prevent slipping, which is designed to carry patients weighing up to 350 kg. The ten seats in the front section of the bus, used for transporting seated patients or treating people with minor injuries, are upholstered in disinfectant-proof man-made leather. Medical equipment on board the bus includes five ECG unit/defibrillator combinations as well as breathing apparatus, infusion pumps, suction pumps and an IT system for recording patient details. Each of the five treatment areas also has a "mediboard" for medical apparatus, a 10-litre oxygen cylinder, infusion holders and plenty of "grab-handle" options for the medical personnel working on board. Furthermore, the vehicle is equipped with an emergency rucksack, a special emergency doctor's bag, two emergency baby cases, a special surgical bag and an emergency case for treating intoxication. Two further oxygen cylinders are located in the seated patient area. Here the passages for the oxygen hoses can also be used as infusion hangers. In the rear area, the cabinet taking up the entire height and width of the bus features two pull-out work surfaces. Looks like someone's going to need to write new words for "The Wheels on the Bus" (the kids' song). "...The ECG on the bus goes beep-beep-beep (hopefully) all around the town"
9. Sounds good to me...lol Never heard of it being abbreviated like that.
10. Sorry, never heard of it that I recall.... ???Peripheral ......Disability????
11. Its a fluke it will go away.... My 2nd diagnosis is maybe your ovaries are inflammed...happens to me all the time.
12. No worries bass...I am good at making people look like an ass, especially MYSELF. I have many years experience in that department so don't even think about trying to one up me on making an ass of yourself.
13. As I said, there is no intermediate in Florida!! Read the link you keep pasting..it isnt there. I have worked in FL for almost 10 years, I am a paramedic and basic instructor and I belong to the FL EMS educators association. There is no intermediate in FL....
14. Hate to hijack, but I repeat..There is NO Intermediate level in FLorida...please prove me wrong and I will apologize...
15. Florida does not have nor recognize the Intermediate level, so I do not know what you are talking about.
16. Wow! Whats up with the hostility? I am hesitant to talk to anyone who asks for advice in such a hostile way, but I will do it anyways. Whats the big deal? I have probably tx lots of weapons and never known it. We don't do searches. If you have a no hands search policy, then you did your job. You had no reason or suspicion to search this individual. Why do you need to CYA? If you can't search, then you are not going to find anything. Did you ask the pt if he had any weapons of ANY kind on his person? He just might have volunteered this information. Sorry I dont see what the fuss is all about...
17. The "coma cocktail" which you are referring to, is no longer taught and has not been taught in the general curiculum for years. It is a dangerous practice to just blindly administer drugs just because a pt is presenting unknown, unconcious. Our protocols and what I teach is assess your pt and treat accordingly. I applaud you for trying to learn more and not just be a "cookbook" medic. On another topic, we too taught the 6 rights, however our 6th right was not documentation but rather the right to refuse. As to raise another point of discussion, I detest the term protocols, lucky for me my last few medical directors have agreed. The term protocol implies you follow a recipe with no deviation. The term "guidelines' is more representative of what we need to call our treatment modalities. Protocols can get you in trouble, especially if they are ever called into question in a court of law. If you do not follow step by step, you are liable. If you only have guidelines, this means you have the ability to assess and render treatment you deem appropriate for that particular situation.
18. I agree with what has been said. 1. Your immediate assessment led you to believe he needed those interventions. He tolerated them and appeared to have benefitted from them. You did your job. Congratulations! 2. NEVER NEVER NEVER do that stupid ass arm test!!! Instructors that still teach that are idiots. You do not do it for the exact reason mentioned above. It is stupid and can create more problems than you think. A simple, light flicker of the eyelashes works for most people cause they are unexpecting it, or pinch the earlobe. There are so many other less harmful ways to test someone.
19. Wow, I am surprised at some of the responses. Mine and my partners seatbelt is fastened before we ever pull out of the station. The key doesnt get turned until we are buckled. We do it because we want to, however my old county enacted the rule that it is a fireable offense if you are not buckled. I support it 100 percent. As for the back of the rig, I buckle every chance I get. I dont care if I do it 10 times during a single transport, I always do it.
20. I disagree, especially since I hate this song and video>>>>> Your 2005 Song Is Hung Up by Madonna "Every little thing that you say or do I'm hung up I'm hung up on you" You'll be rockin' in the New Year in your croch-o-tard! What Hit Song of 2005 Are You? http://www.blogthings.com/whathitsongof2005areyouquiz/
21. I was hoping we could get in at least 4 more pages of nonsense, but it doesnt appear that it will be kept civil enough. Hmmmm....I am thinking of a word that starts with L and ends with OCKED! Can you guess it?
22. For years in FL, we always drew labs and the hospital accepted them. We had the option of doing it or not but if it was a cardiac patient, we had to do it. Yes, it takes a while for troponins to elevate but it was nice to have a baseline right away. What I don't like is how many of us think you just draw the rainbow in any order. I have asked many co workers and students what order to draw the blood in and they give me that blank stare. Just to test yourself for fun, how many of you know the correct order without looking it up? Don't cheat, admit it if you don't. I didn't for years but then I learned and changed my ways and YES it DOES matter what order they are drawn. Results can be skewed...
23. Holy Toledo Marty! You brought back some old memories. I too had a approx 500 lb man in a Geo Metro that ran up a guidewire attached to a telephone pole. The Metro was on its side, quite a ordeal that call was. Those cars should be sold with weight restrictions...lol
24. 7.18 an hour on a 24 hour truck puts you at just around 20K a year and that is just factoring straight time, I did not even take the time to calculate the built in OT. SO basically you should be around 24K/yr at a minimum. How can you say a burger flipping job is better than that when you are making 24k a year for 120 hours of education and you are doing what you like instead of going home covered in grease and smelling like a burger joint?
