  1. I can talk to my wife. She is the greatest and a good listener. My wife had been in EMS for over 20 yrs,so I think that is a "+" ,because she understands the crap that I sometimes have to deal with. The crews that I work with are also a great bunch of people to talk to. My stress relief is usually my "N" scale model trains that I do with my 2 sons.
  2. I'm "The Twisted Top Dawg"
  3. What I had said under the other topic " Do you work with an EMT or a driver" fits in with this topic. Not to long ago we had a student EMT come and do a ride along on the medic unit I was working on. (in my opinion he should have been placed on a BLS truck 1st). Anyway,My medic and I had finished our truck check(along with cleaning and decon),and had come into the day room to read the paper. Our chief came in and asked me if I had met this student. I said "what student ?" I did not know we had one running with us that day. Next he proceeded to grill me and ask why I was not showing him the equipment and how to use it. Well 1st the student was watching tv ,napping in chair with his soda  ,2nd he came in the same time I did (06;00hrs) and did not once come and help us or ask us to show him the equipment. 3rd I'm probably wrong on this, but I'm already an EMT (and still educating myself),I am already working and have been for 12 yrs in EMS. he is the student ( he had later said to me that he wants to make this a career :? ). I told the chief that the student should just ask me for help. Well the student did and I proceeded to give him an education on the equipment and the operations of said equipment.I also went over his text book with him. I will always help an EMT student with his studies, and the new EMT with learning the trucks if I'm asked by them. When I first became an EMT. I did not dare go in the dayroom and watch TV . I was constantly drilled and re drilled on assessments ,treatments, equipment usage,A&P,etc. I always asked loads of questions to my preceptors, and was never shot for asking (unless it was stupid, then I was slapped in the back of the head ). My opinion  is that there are a few newbies that think the world owes them. They know everything and they do not need to learn anymore.
  4. As I keep reading some of the posts regarding the Discovery show "Paramedics" I'm starting to think  maybe that show is the only one that really shows a somewhat positive look of EMS to the general "NON" EMS public. I know we in EMS can sit there watch the show and find many mistakes that the medics and EMT's are doing, but how many "average" citizens out there can really pick that show apart for the screw ups. "Emergency" was a great show, but the paramedics were firefighters also, and EMS was 2 guys in white suits who brought the litter, placed Pt on litter, and really did not touch the Pt. So the public gets the idea that we are all firefighters run by the fire dept. How many of you have been asked by joe public if you are a firefighter paramedic? "Rescue 911" was one of the ca ca shows in my opinion. On that show almost everybody lived and no one died. take care and be safe.
  5. Oh Boy  I've now dove under the table.
  6. I could not have said it any better. Right on brother.
  7. PRPG, with some of the EMT's that you and I know about in our area, can you blame the medic if they do the assessment instead of the EMT.
  8. On my shift ,anytime we are dispatched for a call involving psychs,My medic and I will get a start and ending mileage with the county dispatch, whether it is male or female just to cover our a$$.
  9. WTFO  PRPG & Rid, that's funny. I'm still laughing
  10. village emt. You did not read the first part of my comments. Take care and be safe.
  11. (vfd *emtb* said)- Actually we do transport to the hospital (if its a BLS call or a paramedic on board)and the patient does get charged for our services so we arent technically free. And also ems is trying to put paid employees into our station due to the volunteer shortage, and if it was in the budget im sure it would be all paid but right now the counties EMS budget cant allow for that to happen. I think it would be wonderful to have that happen to our station though.
  12. I know I'm probably wrong with this opinion. Besides RESCUE ME,how many other shows out there presently or in the past have shown Police and Fire the way shows portray EMS. Some of you know what I'm getting at. EMS is usually portraid as 2 guys wheeling a litter to the Pt loading them and both crew members jump into the front of ambulance and drive away. I think we are always portraid in a negative way in shows. I had been on a call several years ago, where the medic and I loaded the Pt in the back of our unit, and the family member asked if one of us was going to ride in the back with their family member. I said that the medic was going to be starting an IV and we would be placing this person on a monitor, etc etc. The family member was surprised and said to me (I'm not kidding) that is not what she had seen them do on the tv shows. :? So I have to agree with several people on this topic.
  13. Yes I would stay. The only question I have is ,"could I wear a hawaiian shirt ,shorts, and sneakers instead of a uniform"? The sirens give me a headache anyway.Maybe I'll make a new uniform that says "CABULANCE DRIVER" on back of shirt.
  14. I have had several problems with new EMT's where I work. They come in on their 1st day and either go to the bunk room and sleep or watch TV. I've walked up to a few over the years and asked them if they checked out their unit and if they know where everything is and how to use the equipment. I usually get the look like I have 2 heads. The dept that I work for will usually start new EMTs on routine transports and not on 911 medic units due to the newbies having no 911 experience. Drives me nuts ,when I hear them say that they should be on 911 units instead of the routine units. I worked on routine trucks for several years before working on the 911 unit.Must be me,but it seems like the new EMTs that are coming out of the classes think that the world owes them.
  15. I worked part time for a local volley medic unit that had the character Alf on the back of the rigs and the phrase " We still make house calls"
  16. I agree with you. At this point it is time to take care of the parents.
  17. Don't forget to get some "scrapple" and "funny cake"
  18. 43% dixie. I get to keep my blue uniform. Just kidding if I had the chance I would live down south
  19. I am scared to death of spiders. Put a hole through the wall at my station one time trying to kill "super spider".I swear the thing was the size of a basket ball.  Anyway I took a broom and tried to kill it. Nope put a hole in the wall and the spider fell to the floor and scampered under the sofa, while I jumped up on the chair  ,and the medic I was working with double over in laughter. My chief/adminisrator gave me a lecture and a ball busting (called me girly man several times  )For several shifts I had rubber spiders, plastic ,and dead ones put in my mail box at work. Heck,I have to have my wife( and my kids) kill them at home, otherwise I will destroy the house trying to kill them. Yeah and before you all bust my stones I'll bet some of you are afraid of snakes.
  20. "Santa" and "Satan". They have the same letters and they both wear red.
  21. I'm finding ( in my area that I live)that there are some paid EMT's and some paramedics that volunteer on the side. Why are they vollying? We complain that we do not get paid well for the service we provide, that EMS needs to be looked at as a medical profession with respect, and that the vollies are taking our jobs, but these same people (who are correct about pay,and medical profession )go and volunteer at other EMS units with paid crews. I think my opinion is that as long as career EMS personnel keep vollying we will never get the things we want.
  22. Our local Volly fire depts do our rescue, and they are very good at the job.
