  1. For me knowledge translates into confidence and speed. I mean the more confident I am with my understanding of the the more confident I feel on the streets. I was just doing clinicals and got to watch a my preceptor doubt his/herself and withhold a treatment that he/she knew was in his/her protocol and would benefit the patient. She was momentarily unsure of the knowledge tha resulted in the loss of confidence in the treatment. The patient was fine but the preceptor had to explain. It was a great learning experience for me. I study every chance I get and if I can't remember something I go back and read it again. Also I have made my own Quick Reference Guide that I carry with me. It contains the stuff that I consider important or that I have a hard time remembering. Constantly refreshing my knowledge is key to me.

    Texas Fires

I was coming back from a clinical shift and drove past the fire in Montgomery about 11:00 pm. Some cows had broken fence and were grazing by the highway. I called 911 to advise that cows were loose and might cause an accident. After giving the location the dispatcher asked me "Sir, are you sure they are cows" I wanted to say something smart like "No, they are aliens with horns" But instead just said "affirmative". That is as close as I got to the fire.
  3. Is your chief your senior, I mean is he much older than you? I have worked with medics that are younger than me but I get the more honest history I always attributed it to being older than them. The mid sternum scar is almost a given that they will deny cardiac problems. I had a patient last week that was taking Rifampin. I asked if he had TB, He denied until we get to the hospital. When the nurse asked what do you take Rifampin for he suddenly was being treated for TB. Go figure.
  4. Because of my age I'm a nose breather so I go with vicks. There is a vicks cream that can be applied inside the nostrils. It's not a panacea but helps.
  5. Wholy Rogain dip Batman! Dittos. My son developed the same pattern when he entered puberty. Still has no chest hair but axillary hair grew about 16 or 17.

    Such a tragedy

I am sorry to hear off your loss and the pain it causes you. I am praying that you will find balance and comfort.
  7. It was v tach. Kinda funny you would say it probably wasn't when you have no idea I mean being that you were not present. We all saw the rythm. She had been given a lot of drugs all morning and was just waking up from sedation.
  8. The patient had Atavan and was just waking up. That was the problem. every time she would regain contiousness she would V Tach. The shock delivery in cuestion was delivered in route to ICU in the hall. There was no chance for other meds. She just grunted, kinda coughed once and blinked a couple of times. I was impressed. Thanks for the input guys. Good info to know.
  9. Welcome. I have no experience to help in any of your questions. But I am sure that some of the guys here will have a lot to say. There is a lot of experience represented on in this forum.
  10. In the ER an elderly post op patient goes into V tach on several occasions about one hour apart. The rhythm is shocked and converted three times. The fourth time she presents v tach she is alert sitting up and conversing. The nurse says sit still honey this is gonna hurt and gives her 200 joules. The rhythm converts nicely. Is this common? Have any shocked v tach in an alert patient?
  11. It is horrible anytime we lose a loved comanion and friend. My condolences to Ruff and family.
  12. There are many scenarios where the probablility of adding the rescuer to the body count is pretty high. There comes a time when we have to put our superhero ego aside and face the reality of the situation and our limitaions. There are lots of instances where rescue isn't advisable not just swift water. Almost all confined spaces with a man down end up being a recovery mission. Often times recovering the primary and one or two rescuers that attempted a rescue. There is a saying 'To choose between crying at my house or crying at yours .... It is cold but true.
  13. What about Vince Foster? What about Travelgate? What about the Rose Law Firm in Arkansas? Clinton was the puppet master of conspirators. His entire political career involved some sort of conspiracy or cover up. The guy could walk through crap and come out smelling of roses. (No pun intended) He remains the most amazing politician I have ever seen. Edited for spelling
  14. This coloring book creates no conflict for me. Kids need to learn history. Howdy Dwane, I didn't remember all of those details but am impressed that you do. I don't "support" Koresh but agree that all americans should be treated justly under the law. There is no doubt to me that there was an "agenda" in Waco. Ruby Ridge was another monumental screw up. They had no reason to kill those kids or the woman, The only rationale was created by the officers. In Waco I seem to remember that the Texas Rangers seized the scene and ran all of the feds off. I bet the Ranger's report has the true story. They should have let the Rangers handle the entire scenario. I can see it now. One guy in a cowboy hat, knocks on the door and returns with Koresh in cuffs.... or not, but the Rangers are cool that way. Sadly enough government abuse seems to push wackos over the edge.

  16. You guys stay safe and keep your feet dry.
  17. Ha! The Reno dates are priceless. I guess the memory just aint what it used to be. I hadn't thought of those events in a long time. I do enjoy a good conspiracy theory. What are your finals for? I am studying for NREMT.
  18. I have heard that EMT's have had good fortune applying for patient transport positions. It's not 911 but it might get your foot in the door. Welcome to the forum.
  19. It's good to have you. I have found this is a really good place to expand your knowledge of EMS Welcome
  20. Erica, Thank you and your hubby for your service to our country. I often hear people say EMS is fun. I love it but I don't know if I would call it fun. EMS is stimulating, chalenging, exciting and extremely gratifying. I am glad that you are here. Welcome.
  21. You are right, you caught me speculating but .... Janet Reno screwed up Waco from the start. They could have taken Koresh a lot of times without causing a standoff. You found evidence of arson, good. If the electricity they would have been using some kind of fuel for light, which would explain accelerants. Might have had generators. Rural Texas would have had propane tanks and not gas lines that could be turned off. Clinton could fix anything and was corrupt enough to do it. I think they assaulted a building full of children with a tank out of political expediency and fixed the results. I haven’t googled and probably won’t. I am kind of impressed with my memory of the event. I am pickin’ up what you are throwin’ down. Koresh was scum. He probably wouldn’t have gotten the death penalty but he should have at least gotten what they gave that other pervert they convicted last week. You know the one that married those little girls. He will die in prison and good riddance. I don't remember Koresh as being the leader of a political organization or running for office. He was a seclusionist because of all the evil shennanigans he was doing in the compound. I think we are thinking of two different things. I was thinking along the lines of the definitions put forth by NIMS, FEMA and US law, primarily because those are the definitions that I am familiar with. I don’t know what the law would call what Koresh did. Rape, coercion, crimes against humanity, but not terrorism.
  22. The fire only started after the ATF drove a tank through one of the walls. Do you think they called the electric and gas companies to mark the lines first? You are very galant for defending the kids he abused. He was a horrible person, a pervert. He deserved to spend his life in jail two lives in jail. But none of those things make him a terrorist. Very true that one doesn't have to be convicted to be a terrorist but they do have to commit an act of terrorism. How many suicide bombers have ever been convicted? Even so every one of them are terrorist because they commited an act of terrorism.
  23. Yes, it is a real question. Koresh was an alleged to be a lot of stuff that he was never convicted of because the ATF burned him to death along with women and children. He never committed an act of terrorism. Mc Veigh on the other hand did commit an act of terrorism that he was convicted of. You do see the difference between fact and emotional hearsay, right? I mean most of your post are pretty factual.
  24. A beer summit is a meeting where beer is consumed to give the appearance that the participants are friends and that the host hasn't caused a monumental idiotic blunder he wants to give the impression he really didn’t intend harm. The term became popular after President Obama called a US policeman stupid and implied he was a racist. Then forced him to drink a beer with the guy he arrested in an effort to play like things were on the level. Why beer? I would conclude he either was further denigrating the policeman by implying he was common or trying to imply that he (the prez) is a regular guy. You probably want to use another term for an intellectual meeting among friends, even if beer is involved. Salud, http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/07/30/beer-summit-begins-obama-_n_248254.html
