  1. If it were not for liberals this country would have already collapsed. You should thank GOD every day for Obama and the Democrats, do you not realize how close we came to a Depression thanks to Republicans.
  2. OK, tell me in your town/county, what was the last law passed by your white politician that helped black people.
  3. You can not change this person, the fact that they were recently fired, and still have not improved, speaks volumes. Protect yourself, report wrong behaviors and acts, I imagine he/she won't last long. I always went out of my way to piss those type people off (usually by doing something off-duty to them) so that they would refuse to work with me.
  4. Its no BS, the citizens have a right to choose who they like. If I remember correctly, David Duke ran for office in Louisiana or Arkansas. But in my view, most of the white politicians are racist, so it does not matter if they keep their klan robe in the closet or where it in public, their intent is the same.
  5. Yes I would. If the majority of any state or municipality looked across the field and chose a member of the KKK as the best choice to represent them, who am I to argue. I wouln't move there !
  6. You should be saying "Thank You" for this, instead of mocking it. Municipalities have been cutting their budgets for years now, and most have spared "Public Safety" or let them make smaller cuts than other departments. Now public safety is being scrutinized. If we have the double-dip recession that many experts are predicting (meaning the worst is yet to come), it may very well be your job that is lost next. This organization has done a very good job in providing their constituents some "tools" to use to save their jobs. If you work for a government based EMS that is not Fire-based, could you argue the benefits of not merging the two departments, with your politicians ? If you are a private 911 service that operates off of a subsidy, could you argue why your service should not be replaced by another private service who is willing to do it for 50% less, or worse, willing to do it for "Zero-Subsidy" (the new trend). If you are hospital-based, can your argue why your department (one of departments that loses money) should not be privatized ? If you are a private non-emergency provider (non 911) can you argue why the municipal 911 department should not be allowed to take over your non-emergency business so that they can show a profit or less of a loss in their operations ? If you think you will never be asked to justify your department's existency, you are living on another planet.
  7. In a previous post, island said: Thats why one should join a union??(Is that why you should join a union; to have thugs and enforcers out breaking kneecaps ???? In this country, unions protect the morons and penalize the quality employees,;they lock you in to (into) a set wage no matter how good or bad of a provider you might be. A CBA does make it harder for a supervisor to harass an individual employee, but if you even think about stepping outside the rules you will receive written reprimands and these will be used against you in successive incidents. Unions protect the whiners and slackers that learn how to use the system. Paramedicmike wrote: He was called (think you meant crawled) on the carpet, alright. But (Shouldnt start a sentence with "but" )I wouldn't go so far as to think that he figured out (that) he was wrong. Based on his posts so far, I'm inclined to think that he still thinks it's funny and that we're just too old and too stiff to appreciate such humour (humor). In the end, he still thinks he's right and we're wrong., He's just smart enough to know not to continue posting in the face of such opposition. My corrections are in "red"; people who live in glass ambulances shouldn't throw stones. He is a kid, lighten up for God's sake ! And before you point out my millions of grammatical and spelling errors, I never pretended to be the police for that subject.
  8. Every state has a labor board or department of labor that regulates any employer. If your employer is breaking the law, then report them. But I am not sure they have broken any law. The Federal Fair Labor Laws pretty much says they have to pay you the wage you were promised, and overtime for everything over 40 hours unless you work for a Fire Department. Any shift diffs, or bonus wages are up to the employer. I am not sure why driving ALS should earn you any higher pay than driving BLS, and I can not think of any reason why you should earn more as a dispatcher, as it is a step down in my opinion. If your people are smoking or using any tobacco product in the ambulance, they should be disciplined. I assume you think it is OK to use smokeless tobacco in your ambulance by your comments.
  9. It is his job to represent the citizens of alabama, it is not his job to be their friend or to socialize with people he does not approve of. Just as the leader of your service has the responsibility to represent all of your employees and treat each fairly; he/she does not have to socialize with any of you, or be friends with any of you. The Governor has to represent the murderers on death row in his state, he does not have to befriend them, or like them.
  10. Why is he "wrong" for stating who he would rather associate with ? If I say in this forum that I will not associate with wife-beaters, drug dealers, and prostitutes, why am I wrong ? I am choosing not to associate with them in my free-time. I am not refusing to treat them as patients, and I am not threatening to kill them for not believing like I do. The Governor has not said that any harm or change will come to non-christians, he just said you cant be my close friend. The American system of law is based on the English (as in England) Common Law system and the Roman Civil Law system. The Common Law system allowed judges or groups to decide law based on previous court judgements and their opinion of fairness, which obviously means that decisions were based on their MORAL judgement. You can read about all of these (comparison and contrast) here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_law http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_law
  11. Nice try AK, but note that I said the 10 commandments as a "starter". It is past my bedtime so I will have to dig some tomorrow, but here are a few links to give you something to read tonight: http://www.faithfacts.org/christ-and-the-culture/the-bible-and-government http://www.firstchurchoftheinternet.org/studies/db400yrs.htm P.S. Whats up with your preoccupation with douche bags this month ?
  12. Are you hoping that Unions will do for EMS what they have done for the steel, auto, aviation, and other industries that are near collapse ?
  13. So does that mean we can only elect atheist ? You point out the hypocrites who are not really religous to make your point. For every "one" of those, there are thousands of good religous people who live a truly christian life. Who do you think would do a better job of running your state, Howard Stern or Billy Graham (if he were healthy and younger) ?
  14. He was elected leader of the whole state, so does that mean he should not lead everyone in the State to be the best they can be. I imagine one of the biggest expenses of his budget is Medicaid, should he not promote healthy living among his citizens to reduce those cost by asking them not to drink, smoke, do drugs, be obese ? If he takes a hard stance against criminals and corruption to protect the innocent, is he not being a good leader ? If he takes such a stance is he pushing his moral views upon his citizens ?
  15. Religion is all in your life, like it or not, where do you think our laws come from ? Hint, the ten commandments for starters. In many states, you can not buy alcohol on Sunday, why do you think that is ? Truett Cathey does not open his Chickfila restaurants on Sunday, and he often speaks of his faith, does that make him a holly roller ? And what makes being a holly roller a bad thing ? I have more respect for Johova Witnesses than any other religion, why; because the give up all of their wordly posessions and actually go out and preach/live by what they believe. Unlike most protestants who are in the liquor store or strip club on Saturday night and in church Sunday morning. Are you saying that anyone who is religous can not hold public office ? With all the sex and money scandals I would say we need more religous people in office.
  16. In the NY scenario, I am not sure I agree with waiting on PD. Look at it from this angle, what if as he was slow rolling behind this guy, someone in an upper office or apartment was filming the whole thing (maybe they were awoken by the chaos). We watch this ambulance follow this guy for 10 minutes, and then boooommmmm, he is hit by a truck and killed. When that video hits You-tube, do you think the public would say you did your job ? Do you think your employer would keep you on as an employee ? I often found myself in situations where I should have waited on the experts (fire, pd, rope rescue), but if I had, the patient would have died, so I risked my life a little; I think any of us who have been in the business atleast 10 years have probably done the same. Letting this guy walk into traffic and die is not the answer.
  17. I think it is refreshing that he had the balls to say what he really believes instead of being like everyone else that lies through their teeth, and says whatever is politically correct. Like it or not, you now know where you stand with this guy. And I do believe that the church expects you to try to save the great unwashed at every chance you get.
  18. sounds like islandemt is getting a commission.
  19. First of all, do an internal poll. Find out what is liked/disliked by your crews. Then talk to other providers in your area about the ambulances they use and what problems they have encountered. Visit the plants and watch one being built if you have one nearby. Put a focus on safety where you can (no sharp edges, 3 point restraints in box for medics, a shelving lay-out that works for the type of calls you do (if 911, put the long back board compartment on the passenger's side, and the exhaust on the driver's side). Have all the dealers bring you a demo unit, ride around in it for a day or two. Compare warranties from each company, and get them to battle against each other for price and warranty (I usually asked that they give me atleast 5 year electrical warranty, if not lifetime).
  20. I am going with an aberrant wide complex tachycardia, not V-Tach, but I would be applying the pads anyway. My guess is the underlying problem is an electrolyte imbalance that is causing the dysrythmia, but it could be an MI. It will be interesting to see what the diagnosis actually was.
  21. I didnt know I was up to a trick tnuigs, I thought I offered positive advice. Conversely, you said: emtdavexnc ... your 17 ? get into medicine ! Volunteer in local a hospital, just to check it out. EMS is way too overrated, do not set your sights so low. cheers I am very proud of my career in EMS, and I do not believe it is overated. Over the years I have saved many lives, and touched thousands of lives. There are very few jobs that are as rewarding as ours. I hope that the younger generation will continue to set their sites so low.
  22. I would also add that many patients do not do well on "transport" ventilators, and need to be bagged instead. Most services use some version of the "auto-vent" which is fine for those who are unconscious and not breathing on their own. But most patients require a "real" vent. But with that being said, I encountered several patients who did not tolerate the switch to another vent very well. I have never heard of clamping a tube.
  23. If you need a guide, you have not studied enough. ACLS does not require you to memorize or know too many drugs, if you cant calculate drips without looking at a guide, I wouldn't allow you to practice on my bus. No offense, I am just particular about you knowing what you need to know, and I do not think it is very reassuring for the patient to watch you look up stuff in a book or guide to determine how to treat them.
  24. Don't listen to these burn-out cases who want you to choose a different career. Yes, there are other careers where you can make more money, but that is the worst thing you can do, choose a job just for money. If you have a calling to enter our field, then do so, I would suggest the following. 1. Keep your driving record absolutely spotless. It will be difficult for you to get a job until you are 21-23, it will be much more difficult if you have speeding tickets or a DUI. 2. I would suggest that you either volunteer or ask your local provider if you can ride 3rd a few shifts to see if you like it (some will say no, but eventually someone will say yes). I think it is important to get a taste of what the job really is before you dedicate yourself to several years of school. 3. I would also suggest you go straight from EMT-I school to Paramedic school without seeking employment, because of your age (this is called zero-to-hero in our field). Many will disagree with that, but as stated above, you will have a hard time finding employment as an 18 year old emt. You will not have any problem getting hired as a 20 year old Paramedic. 4. Once you get an EMS job, do not work two jobs, or work 100 hours/week at one job, as it leads to the burnout that causes some of the negative comments about this field. EMT-Is are generally earning in the high $20s to low $30s/year, most Paramedics are earning in the $40 + per year, as starting pay. It's not Doctor's pay, but it is a reasonable, liveable wage, if you live within your means. Unfortunately most young medics buy 2 new cars (at $400/mo apiece), a house that is too big, and all kinds of toys that they can not afford. Then they get mad at EMS because they have to work 2 jobs to support their foolish spending habits.
  25. First of all, you have to be in Command, which you were not. You should have politely hung up the phone, explaining you would contact Medical Control once you assessed the scene. One thing that is useful, is to put the "on-scene medical bystanders" to work. If they are busy working, they have less time to standback and critique you. Give them easy jobs: Give me a head count of how many injured, move the walking wounded over there and start triage, set up my triage areas, anything to get them working. If you look like you are in command, and have a plan, they will listen. If you look lost and scared, and have no plan, they will eat you up and get in your way.
