  1. Commodore, The article states the incident was January 17th. This article was from February, but I did hear about it on the news either the day or a few days after it happened. I guess the second article was due to further investigation into it. Have not heard anything since
  2. Very much agreed, Mike. The report that I heard on another news station on TV, conflicts with this article and said that the airport ALS unit was available, but could not come to that side of the airport. So I am not sure which was true. Either way, I don't think either scenario is acceptable. The system here is most definitely broken.
  3. http://philadelphia.cbslocal.com/2011/02/16/i-team-investigation-mother-dies-while-waiting-for-medical-treatment/ I know I have heard about this because I am local, but has anyone else heard about this? Opinions? The news stated today that there is only one ambulance stationed at the airport, and that unit is only allowed in the "secure" area of the airport. So they could not respond because the woman was on the unsecured area of the airport. What could you do in this situation?
  4. Richard I agree. And I an not condoning what she did, BUT she did not threaten anyone, did not mention any names or even the school she worked for. So she is most likely protected by free speech. I am familiar with this district, (since I am local), and it is notorious for being a terrible district as far as kid's behaviors. I do believe that this is a growing problem of the children of this generation, and does need to be addressed. That being said, a blog is not an appropriate place to address this. If she has that big of a problem with how she is treated as a teacher, she should look for a different profession.
  5. Not the same story, but here is a link that works, about the same story. http://abcnews.go.com/US/pennsylvania-teacher-wrote-insulting-blog-posts-students-suspended/story?id=12929001
  6. I don't know much about EMS in Canada, But I think most people in here would agree, finish your degree! You are halfway done anyway, and you would certainly benefit from your education. And you always have the back round if you decide to want to go a different direction with your career. Good Luck!
  7. I echo what ugly said, a lot of places don't call your references unless something looks like it is up. Out of all the jobs I've applied for, as far as I know, none of my references have ever been called. So don't stress! If they already agreed to hire you, just waiting for the test results, sounds to me like you have it in the bag! Did you sign any paperwork upon being hired? When I had got hired for my current job, (currently out due to a work injury) they hired me during the interview, and I signed paperwork at that time. Then I had to get all my paperwork, immunization records, physical, etc. But since I had already signed paperwork, I didn't worry about it. It did take them about 2 weeks to process everything through HR and schedule me a date for orientation!
  8. Chris, he said he was sure he passed the drug test. It seemed like it was more the physical that he was concerned about. Anyway, to answer your question: I would call if you haven't heard anything by Friday, give them a call. Explain the situation and ask about your status. I had a job that put me basically in the same situation. Sometimes "As soon as possible" isn't so quickly, some companies take their good old time. But if you were hired, contingent upon drug and physical testing, they definitely should let you know what if going on. If they don't, follow up! Don't be afraid to call, they already agreed to hire you, and you have the right to know the results of your tests. Good luck and let us know!
  9. Crew scheduler is great when you can get it to work! But i do not have any suggestions for you, as I am not familiar with mac. I do know that it does work on some other browsers, since i have used it on other browsers, such as firefox, and google chrome. And i also use it on my android phone. But other then that, I dont have any advice.
  10. I really can't speak for SC, because i don't know what their scope of practice is. But in some states, There is very little difference between EMT-I and EMT-P. In Maryland, the only difference between the two, is nasal intubation, and the 4 paralytic drugs. The protocols are also completely the same. But, Maryland is crazy! They call their EMT-I medics, and their EMT-P are called Paramedic. Anyway, I am always an advocate of higher education. But, I also understand that sometimes, you just need to get some education, so you can make some money, so you can get some further education. That being said, I would say get your EMT-I, and work and make some money while going further. Don't stop there! Sorry for the rambling post, these pain meds are not doing me or my grammar any favors
  11. I am not sure what you mean by symbols, but typically, or at least what we use around here is the initials EDP for emotionally disturbed person.
  12. Well if you are an EMT, you should already know what is in an ambulance. And each state has specific requirements for what you must have. For example, in PA, bandaids aren't required. DUH! (We carry them anyway.) In MD, bandaids are required. You have to contact the EMS licensing agency in your state to find out specifics. oops fiznat I guess you posted that while i was typing mine. Well, what he said.
  13. What part of PA are you in? If you are near me, i can reccomend a few good surgeons.
  14. In my area, our juniors get to ride the trucks, and ambulances, if they are first responder trained they can assist, ( i think you can get that at 14 but not sure) and pretty much do anything outside on a fire scene. It is a pretty good program. At my station you have to provide working papers, and report cards for every quarter, and must comply with the national labor laws for how often they can be in the station. They have to sign in and out, so that they are not there too much, and they are restricted as to what hours they can run calls or be in the station.
  15. Lone: although it can be two years since you took the class, it has to have been less then a year since you have taken practicals, for NREMT. But, like 4c already mentioned, PA does not recognize NREMT at the basic level, so it would not effect him. Actually, I don't know where dominic is located in PA, but I know the high school i graduated from has a Votech program, in which you can complete EMT-B classes in your last 2 years of high school, during school hours. I know the majority of high schools in my county do the same. My reccomendation for you Dominic, is to get involved, I know here all you need is CPR and they will let you ride along on the ambulance. Your local fire company might be the way to start. And no, you can't take the class before you are 16. It is only a one semester class here.
  16. *does happy dance with you* Yay! You will do great!
  17. Anything over 300 lbs is an automatic manpower call for my company, and they send out an additional crew. We have the ferno power stretchers in the bariatric trucks, with the removable bariatric side piece. They are usually pretty good about manpower, anything that comes over 300, we don't even have to ask for manpower, they dispatch it automatically. There is one patient, (which I have not had the privledge of having) that is 1,000 lbs and i believe they sent 10 guys.
  18. Correct me if I am wrong, but the refresher to take the NREMT again, must include practicals correct? So I don't think you could do that online. When i took my refresher course to be able to take my NREMT and for my MD EMT cert, it had to include practicals and there was several people in that class that were there because they had failed and needed the refresher. But not completely sure.
  19. Gr it wouldn't let me quote the other thing Lone posted, since it was already quoted, but from what he posted, it looks like since it has been less then 2 years, you can still take the test. I don't see what the problem is. Coud be, you are talking to the wrong person, OR they are confused about what you are asking. I recently had to obtain my certifications in 4 states for a job, and when contacting people to everything straigtened out, there was a bit of confusion on the part of several people at the state EMS offices i contacted. I would double check that. And I'm not sure how the NREMT works in Michigan, since I did not need it initially, but it has been a pain for me. Only 14 states recognize it for EMT-B, (43 for paramedic) and it does not give you "instant reciprocity" anywhere. Out of the 4 states I needed certs in, only one requires it, and even that does not give me reciprocity, i still had to take the refresher course for that state, and then the written and protocol exam. I also had to take another refresher course for another state, which also counted as my refresher course and practicals so I could take my NREMT written exam. So the NREMT has not done me any good. I do not believe the NREMT would allow him to take the test afte a year, without a state certification. You have to have copies of your current state card, CPR card, and refresher course and passing practical completion paperwork to be eligble to sit for the NREMT exam after the period for initial certification passes. You have to have to have taken NREMT approved practicals within a year, which I don't think he has done, according to his original posts.
  20. For me, it is just as much the sight as the smell. Its better if I am in a larger area, then stuck in the back of the ambulance. I have to be careful, I have a weak stomach, if it smells bad enough, I will throw up. My parents still tell a story about when I was about 8, and the dog fart smelled so bad I puked. I will probably never live that one down. Sometimes a bad smell/sight will turn my stomach and I will throw up. Luckily this had only happened once on the job, and i got outside before it happened. I think the worst smell, is after they pop an abcess. Anybody ever smelled that? UGH, curdles my stomach just thinking about it.
  21. Was going to ask the same thing about MSIR and Gabpentin. I know I've heard of gabpentin before, but can't put my finger on what it is. Also, forgive me for not knowing this, what is RCMP? Syrup of Ipecac? Really? I didn't know they were in anyones protocols anymore!
  22. well i was trying to figure out what he meant by that..
  23. how would a manual bp be considered NIBP?
  24. How would you get discipline if you were in the back with a patient and your partner got in an accident? Not being accusatory, just curious.
  25. For me right now it is, because I was promised to move to their office at a peds hospital, which is working with their critical care transport team, and it required driving halfway and being in the back the other half. Which I am not able to do now. And I am allowed to stay with the service, but I have to stay at their corporate offices, which is a 60 mile each way commute, and I am making almost 4 dollars less there. That barely covers that gas. It's not worth it. Thank you for the reassurance. It's hard when I feel like I'm doing the right thing and I got bit in the ass. Yes I am working in MD, i bet you can guess the service.
