When I was with the volly FD I hit my "oh shit" button like 4 times, all by mistake, not hard to bump, there is no code name, they just ask you if your okay. A code name would be clever.

If only he would have gotten that damn side car.........

OK, I am very new to EMS and had my first call to a DOA. It was an older lady and she had been down for several days, maybe a week. For some reason it did not seem to phase me. Is that normal? I am more concerned with the fact that it seemed so routine and was not in the least bit upsetting or anything. I did help hook her up to a 3 lead to run the strip. We had a student doing clinicals and he had never done a 3 lead so he and I hooked them up and printed the strip. Is this normal or should I be concerned about my reaction. For some reason I thought that this would bother me more.
Never bothered me, suctioning doesn't either..........weird.

basically take how ever much a year you think a fast food fryer makes a year and substract double that from $0 and walah but fear not for you truelly will love your job,i know i do,as the shirt, sticker, etc says ems the hardest job youll ever love. the pay sucks, most of the time the hours suck, alot of times the patients are rude as hell but guess what youl love what you do,is it worth it, that all is up to you.
I make more then a McDonald's employee....
I personally enjoy my four 10 hour shifts and the pay could be better, but Ill take it, I don't get that many rude patients either, on occasion, can't please them all

Depends on the state and service, municiple vs commercial/private (union/non-union).
On average in our state EMT's start around $15 max out at about $21
Paramedics start around $18 and max out at about $28 (non-supervisor)
Most municiple medics start at about $25.13 based on the State workers pay tier. Most start on tier 13 max out on tier 20
Dispatchers start about $17 and max out about $23
Then you need to see if you get s stipend for CME's / Conferences / Do they offor a 401K, what are the costs for your health insurance.
Plus depending on the service you get an increase if your an FTO or have your EMS-Instructor, PALS and ACLS-Instructor.
EMS is not gonna make your wallet fat but if you manage yourself correctly you can get a nice house, car etc...
On average in RN's in our area make $40 to $55/hr and as a traveling nurse we have seen close to $80.
Research the area you go to before you decide if you want this as a career, I did 20yrs ago and have done just fine, yet I have seen others struggle.
Good Luck
$15 an hour as an EMT??????? where the hell you from??! Im moving there!! medics start at $12-14 here and EMTs between $8-11 an hour, depends on service and your longevity as EMT.

Just resigned from my VFD after 7 years, they tried to yell at me for not participating in the fish fry....I was working 12 hour shifts and Jess was sick a few times, sorry my family and job comes first and then had issues of how i screen new applicants by myself when no one the "committee" is never available, there is no way written in bylaws how to do it, Jess and I don't need that BS.......volunteer days are over for me.

That may be the case that we've all forgotten a cup of coffee, but this was no cup of joe, this was a laptop that would have done major damage (possibly even killed?) any person it would land on. In short, yes it was a mistake, yes it was human error, but there should be remedial training to help lessen the chance that the crew will do this again.
Agree defiant 1.......
-
Very dumb......we all make mistakes, but come on now....I wouldnt say fire them, maybe a suspension, make the crew split the cost of a new toughbook, and watch mandatory safety videos.....

I have NEVER gotten a discount at Dunkin' Donuts, in or out of uniform.
I understand some movie theaters, on specific days of the week, offer discounts to emergency responders, but none of the theaters are near me, so I'd lose in fuel ($2.99.9 a gallon yesterday) what I'd save on tickets.
The only time I remember getting any discounts was in the week following the 9-11 attack: Rest stops on the New York Thruway had discounted some food items for responders (LEO, FD, EMS), and the military, and french fries were free with another purchase.
Richard, my patner(s) and I have gotten 20% discounts at Dunkin Donuts about 5 times now. I was surprised atually

Don I apologize, I somehow thought you had been defending her all along. That was my mistake.
When you have an attitude like that then it truly is only a matter of time. Be it firing or getting your ass kicked, it's just a matter of time.
Well Ruff, I dont just blame the EMS for what happened, I blaim the city as a whole and that family and dispatch, etc... I m not getting into it again.
I again feel, it wasnt right to fire her only because that was a phone conversation and not radio or face to face, HOWEVER.As stated previously, she was mean and I don't feel sorry for her.......she left her cell phone sitting in the medic room at one of our trauma centers, I found it and was looking at it, it had "Josie" written on it, so I left it sit by the computer I was using and when i was leaving I was going to turn it in, she came back to the hospital to retrieve it and saw that I moved it and had it next to me, she snatched it up, gave me a dirty ass look and said "dont touch my fuckin phone again" and stormed out.....was that called for?????? So inside myself Im laughing at her...cause all those times she was mean had just bit her in the ass!
So Ruff, Im defending her about being fired for the phone call thats it, just seems wrong to do when it was to a peer, you see what I mean? In general, this made my day! she needed a lesson taught........apology accepted ruff...lol

Yeah that's right Don but how many of us have grumbled like that over a recorded line? I'd bet more than any of us knew but what she thought was an innocent comment to the dispatcher became her waterloo.
If you say it then you mean it. No matter how you want to whitewash this, she made some inappropriate comments on a recorded line, this story became international news headlines and it was naive of anyone to think that this would not become something HUGE.
Maybe she will learn by this and not speak like that again but I still stand by my original statements that this type of toxic attitude is exactly what any employer wants. She makes it sound like the patient was a burden to her and that's where I draw the line. ONe toxic attitude is enough to sour the entire bunch of grapes. And with a service with problems to begin with this attitude just festers until it is unleashed and very bad things happen.
Do I wish anyone to be fired, nope, she's now one of the 9 of 100 who doesn't have a job but that's life and you go on, you grow up a little and you move on. Thats what you have to do.
I knew this medic, she was mean and thought her shyt didnt stink, she always had an attitude about everything....so honestly this was just karma in my book.
-
If she truly said that on a recorded line then I don't want her working for me. IT's that toxic attitude that makes me sick. It's that toxic attitude that makes other people not want to work with them.
If you consider every patient a burden which I'm not saying she does but with an attitude like that then I can almost bet that every patient to her is a burden, then good riddance.
She did not say that on the radio, she said that on the phone to the medic who helps run the dispatch center, none of this was said over the radio by her.
Lets face it, We have ALL grumbled and cussed patients out at certain times....NONE OF US are innocent. We might not have said it over recorded lines or to the patients face, but still.......

Speculation on our part. Either way, a blatant attempt to fire someone, anyone, and have the public think that the city is getting rid of the person "responsible" for the man's death. In Josie's case, they (may have) managed to find someone involved who actually violated a (singular, unrelated to patient care in any way) policy.
The city needed a scapegoat for there blatent disregard for the weather and situation, unfortunately, she was it.....
-
Initial story was all 4 to get suspended and when they served there time, Josie was to be fired. That was from the beginning, Dust.
