Please note that you're in NSW.................... BLS includes a bunch of good stuff that, if I were to do here in New York Some examples are, as an EMT-Basic, I am not allowed to start an IV. I'm only allowed (under state protocols) to administer albuterol, 81 Mg chewable aspirins, glucose paste, and oxygen. BLS crews are not YET allowed to do finger sticks, as ALS only recently got the OK to do so, but my instructors foresee it coming.
Whilst I fully understand that 'our' basics are trained to a much higher lever than those in the US...to me it is backwards to allow a basic a skill and drug regime that lets them administer drugs (sulbutamol, asa, and glucose paste) with out giving them a tool to allow to get the base line for the drug they are giving.
They have a stethoscope to hear an expiratory wheeze............salbutamol waranted
They have chest pain and suspected AMI (ECG maybe)........aspirin waranted
They are ? diabetic (no BSL taken so are they Hypo/ Hyperglyceamic)......give them the glucose.....makes NO sense to me
I see that you say NOT YET.......hope that it changes soon for you guys
-
If in local protocols, and in level of practice, are you going to do a blood sugar level finger stick test?
IF IN PROTOCOLS AND IN SKILL LEVEL??? WTF!!!! this is basic stuff people.........our bloody trainees can do this procedure. what backwood service would not allow their staff to carry out this minor skill....

You mean those little round spot mirrors you can adhere onto the end of your regular wing mirrors, yes we have those
cheap NZers...................

Ahhh thanks for showing compassion to my grandfather guys........................
see what cough medicine and beer will do to you after a long day riding the bus around for amusement during retirement?

Kiwi and Oz, do you guys really have REAL traffic to deal with, seriously I have no idea what your traffic is like, but I doubt it rivals any major american city. And as far as big ford ambulances traveling at high speeds; they are mostly diesels (although there are some gas burners out there now), so high speed is not really realistic. But I agree, more training is always a good thing, and no one under age 25 should be allowed to "drive" an ambulance (the children can "tech calls")
mikey...sydney is a city that is roughly the same size as chicago, and the has the same traffic problems that go with it.
look at it this way..do you guys have to deal with semi trailer trucks that have 4...yes 4 trailers in tow? (about 45 foot long each) on dirt and dusty roads?...all things are relevant aren't they?

The hospital here is all to happy to load you up on ondansetron while you are in hospital but if you need a script for some antiemetics post discharge they religiously use metaclopramide because (and I quote a Consultant Physician) "its cheap!"
It's also crap (but hey look who is talking)
but depending on what they want to use it for kiwi
different actions on different receptor sites, so at time can be usefull

Dude. Im looking at being a paramedic in less than 3 months. And ive taken two drivers ed courses. no tickets no wrecks within the last 3 years neither of which were of my own fault (both when I was 16). Ive been driving since I was fourteen and most of those vehicles were full sized luxury suvs with a similar profile to vanbaulances through multi weather conditions including several trips to the rockies where the sleet and snow came out of no where. And I can tell you I drive those trucks better than a 20 year vet.
You know what my first truck I drove. A 2004 freightliner medium duty. Than my next one which I had a 8 month bond with was a type III 2003 E450 7.3 L powerstroke diesel with a rebuilt motor and transmisission with a MEDTEC box. I ran that truck code three in rural and city streets.
Experience with a senior officer dont mean squat. Hell for all you know he might end up teaching him how get the truck to turboshift thorugh gears and prematurely wear out the clutch so they can accelerate faster . or burn up a rear differential from excessive speeds going code three or just a very high speed limit for long distances
You get the rescue randy jitters out of them and run them through scenarios. Assign him to one truck and only one. Have him become "in tune" with his box. Hippyish I know but when I did it it didnt just become an ambulance it became "my truck". It was the cleanest of the entire fleet and I checked fluids on it like clock work before and after shift and rode the mechanics ass religiously when it was about due for something or something was acting up with it. And with that kind of pride you learn to respect your truck and like your limits you learn its. And as far as driving it once all of that is acquired the rest is comes as common sense (low lying poles, trees, electrical wires, diesel truck not meant for hauling ass, potholes are 5 times worse in the back as they are in the front as with the stopping. Its a true bond between man and machine.Thats something a newbie cant learn if hes flipping through a truck a shift. Is when A truck is acting right and when A truck is in need of a mechanics loving hands.
Im 20 years old and ive busted my ass and have been turned away because off **** like you pushing to get me off the truck because im a liability. Ive been driving a box for two years now and have run 40+ HOURS NO SLEEP LIKE THE REST OF YOU!!! hell why dont you increase your emt minimum age requirement since thats all an emt is worth anyways besides a basic lifting service and applying O2.
Try getting that out of a two day EVOC course.
Im now off my troll spree and my soap box. Note to paramedic mike and Dwayne. I am tired however I am coherent when i write this post. but its pencil pushing crap like this thats caused me to be automatically turned away by three different nearby 911 units because of the very thing gulfmedic pointed out and further have those services hire someone less qualified than myself
Runswith......... would it be better for you if i gave you two planks of wood and a few nails?
that way you could build your own cross to be crucified on.......
Gee at 20 years of age, you must have seen and done it all.............much better than some one that has been doing it for the length of your life time.
Tired or not and immature spray like that is probably the REAL reson you haven't been picked up by a 911 operation.
For the record, here in NSW you have to be 21 to fit the drivers licence guidlines to drive and ambulance, and secondly you cannot do more than an 12hr shift to fit OH&S guidlines for fatigue. keeps the public and the paramedic safe

It's called offering value to your customers you muppet ...
no it means that you can give me twice as much for my dollar compared to yours, or for my aussie 5 dollar, i could go up market and get something way better.......... now thats "effering villue"........lol

all i have listed in a previous post, there is a vast arrange of drugs and skill a paramedic in nsw has to carry and complete.
This is a far cry more detailed than what an emt-b can and will do in the states.
If your lucky you can still join the service here as a mature age person (with some trade qualifications etc) and start as a trainee and work your way up to a paramedic over the next 2.5 to 3 years.
But the service is heading towards (and has already implemented) the idea that they employ only people that have completed a 3 year BA at Uni for the position as a paramedic. then they have to still the to training 'in house' but it will take only about 12 - 18 months to get to the paramedic level.
to attain the ICP level they will stall ave to be employed as at least a 3rd year paramedic and then apply for the skill upgrade and training (in house) to gain this position. Uni degree will give some credit toward the training, but not negate it.
For the record to explain the school system here in Aus (NSW anyway)... My son completed Bio, Chem etc at school in his HSC...studying at Uni to get his BA the first year Bio and Chem was not as hard as the same subjects in hi uni course, just the essays were a little different to do. Second year seems to be a little more in depth, so he says
-
cos I love you long time five dollar
then that would only be about $4:75 US then...........ot $3:80 Aus....either way AK it means kiwi is cheap...(probably nasty as well)
-
It was the eighties bro .... we got a bit uppity what can I say?

Not to completely thread-jack, but are there any of the on site medical companies that are easier to get in with than others when you're a foreigner? I certainly haven't had much luck! (though maybe my problem is that I'm only looking for work during breaks in the academic terms)
you will have to research them, most of them take people that have finished their uni degree and are not empolyed by a state service or are already paramedics that have been working for state services. Not sure if they will take people that have not finished their degree yet.
go thru google to find out more.

awww c'mon kiwi.....you're like the bastard little cousin that we all love and hate.........
Dwayne might remember the ANZUS treaty that you guys didnt honour.......lol

Nit rully, E woz tikung tha puss

Depends on what you want to do Christina
If you want to join a emergency service or gain a position in a company that just does mine site, sporting events etc
an EMT basic (US) doesn't really cut the mustard in my neck of the woods when it comes to basic level of training to carry out the job (see previous posts)
you may need to do some research on what you would like to do when you get to Oz.
Cheers

their numbers may be dwindling, but the march is getting bigger
contingents from ALL over the world marched....so good

For the Aussies..........
Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We've golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in Nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history's page, let every stage
Advance Australia fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia fair!
Beneath our radiant southern Cross,
We'll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing
Advance Australia fair!
For the Kiwi's.........
God of Nations at Thy feet,
In the bonds of love we meet,
Hear our voices, we entreat,
God defend our free land.
Guard Pacific's triple star
From the shafts of strife and war,
Make her praises heard afar,
God defend New Zealand.
Men of every creed and race,
Gather here before Thy face,
Asking Thee to bless this place,
God defend our free land.
From dissension, envy, hate,
And corruption guard our State,
Make our country good and great,
God defend New Zealand.
