  1. We never did have the EMT thing. We used to have level one to level five. Level one being a trainee/ probationary and level five was a paramedic. Now that we have all the name paramedic we have paramedic student, paramedic intern, paramedic and intensive care paramedic...I still slip and call everyone ambo's and ICP's frogs

  2. The designation "assault rifle" has been used many times in this thread. Besides being a rifle used in the commision of an assault, what do you think is meant by this designation?

However, the 5.56mm round used in the AR 15 style rifles is most certainly not a large or heavy caliber round. In fact, it is quite small and virtually all the bullets used to hunt deer, elk and so on are of a larger caliber. In addition, where do we draw the line when it comes to a "large amount." I am not being argumentative or talking semantics, but having a good definition of what we are discussing is probably a good idea.

lets stop splitting hairs....common understanding of an ássult weapon'is a weapon that is designed to be used in military type of roles. haxs a semi auto for god forbid a full automatic load system, that can have a magazine capacity of greater than 10 rounds......AR15, AK47, MP5, Aus Styer for example...and for the real nutters and .50 cal machine gun you can purchase.....

the AR 15 was designed as a light combat semi auto/ auto rifle troops to carry....dont matter if it is .223 or 5.56....in a domestic area, a large number of bullets can do an awful lot of damage...all you have to do is keep pulling the trigger

  3. However, I have neither stated my opinion about gun ownership nor have I stated rather I own a gun in this conversation. My point has been to focus on the subject with a broad lense instead of simply focusing on a single aspect. Should we not appreciate the issue as broadly as possible? For example, why focus only on "assault" weapons when it is known that hand guns are the most commonly used firearm in terms of killing people in the United States. Again, I believe in a broad discussion where hyperbole is minimalised as much as possible. I've put personal bias on the shelf and want to focus on the issue broadly since our country is at a point where dialogue and change is possible.

The reason I assume people (myself included) are focusing on assult weapons, is primarialy it WAS an assult weapon that took the like of 20 kids under 7 at Newtown......most mass murders in situations like this use assult weapons to do their damage (not just the USA either). In Australia in Port Arthur, it was a military assult rifle that was used, I Norway it was a assult weapon that killed the kids at the camp on the island. in Newtown it was an AR15 assult weapon (that the killer took after killing his mother) that committed this heanous crime.

if there are as many hand gun killings in the USA, then why do you (not you personally, but the USA in general) not want guns regulated to assist in minimising this number?

Surely saving ONE life would have to be a bonus.....

  4. The USA also has 132,183 schools at the elementary and secondary level alone by 2010 statistics. Once this is factored in the percentual incidents decreases dramatically.

low percentages really wouldn't make the families at Sandy Hook, Virginia Tech and Columbine any happier....

As I said before, gun control is NOT making all guns illegal, but rather contolling guns that REALLY DO NOT need to be in the hands of joe public.....

  5. I don't know about knives being more dangerous than guns, but at close range I would rather defend against a firearm than a knife.

EDIT: I would rather defend against neither.

    maybe so.

but how many 6 year olds could defend them selves against a military assult weapon that fires a .223 caliber bullet a lot faster than they could ever run at a rate of more than60 bullets a minute?

if this person was carrying a knife. do you think that 26 people would have died before some one stopped him?

yes mass murders are committed with bladed weapons, but, most bladed mass killings by a single person dont happen in a 20 minute period. but with a semi auto rifle.....well

Saw this on another site and it should put an end to the discussion.

No one said make guns illegal......gun control is not making them illegal.....it is making the community safe

again I ask, why does Joe public need to own military style assult weapons?

If these type of weapons were controlled, then maybe it would not be as easy for the 'nutters' to get hold of then to carry out these sensless murders..........

it's illegal to drink under 21 in the USA (and I know people do it) but maybe were should amend the rules to make it ok for anyone to drink as alcohol dont kill people, its the drunk people that do it............

You can own your hunting rifle, buy why have the same style of weapon the troops are using in the middle east or Afganistan?

  7. A gun has never killed a person. It is nothing but a hunk of steel. It has no brain, no life of its own. It cannot make decisions on its own. It takes a person to make a choice. A person must choose to use a gun in anger. A person must aim the gun and pull the trigger. It is the person we need to control.

Maybe, however the point is that military style assult weapons have NO place in the general community..I own guns, I live in a rural area and abide by the laws that allow me to own them. Assult weapons are not used for "hunting" and most responsible people would agree with that.

Yes we do need to control the 'person', but we also need to control the óbject'.

"People say what if they had a knife?'' Trouble with that statement is that a knife cannot kill 30 people in one go from 50 feet, thent o be reloaded and then kill andother 30..........

Take the most lethal available weapon away from the 'mentally disturbed' and then there will be no easy way for them to ''go postal' (another great American term, that derives from these type of events) if they do not have the access to these style of weapons (assult weapons)

at the time the Australian Governemnt implemented the new gun control laws here in 1990's I was apprehensive and alarmed, but see the good it has done in both my role as an emergency service worker and a avid shooter.

So yes control the person, get better mental health services, but also control the tool that can cause this high number of deaths.

Mass murders have always happened and always will. They occur every day somewhere in this world. We must remember that Evil exists and sometimes there is nothing you can do to prevent it. Wars have been fought over this.

we can do some thing to prevent this, and we can do things to minimise these results..........no one is advocating that you dont own a gun, what they are saying is why does ''joe public" need assult weapons? Why do you not have a better way of recording where these weapons are? do all people that own firearms have them secured in a way that is safe storage (a locked gun safe, with the ammo separate)......

Do this and you can move forward to preventing things like what happened in Conneticut.

  8. My thoughts and prayers to those involed, from the families, teachers and students and also to the emergency services that responded to the scene

Why kids? What did they do? Innocent young lives fractured for the sake of some one having a melt down..........

the right to bear arms has gone really astray with this one.....maybe constitutional revision maybe required to fix this mess, (thats from a view point OUTSIDE of the USA, where it is a priviledge to own a gun...not a right).

  9. Well go to the 2nd link, shell out the $XXX,XX for the book I referenced and read it. You will be a better medic for it.

But make sure you can afford the book. It's pretty expensive. But please go look at the link. It'll save you a butt chewin

what happens when you dont work for a service thar requires you to write a report, but rather has a laptop or tough pad with an EMR loaded on to it

  10. I know EMT's dont have legal reasons to arm themselves even though I'm hoping that day will come.

Odd thing to say........maybe you are in the wrong field of work.....want to carry a side arm?....join the cops or the military...they give them to you there.......

we have enough responsibility having medications of addiction let alone a piece of equipment that is designed to kill.

and I have no problems with people owning guns, have a few myself.....but in no way would I advocate carrying at work....

  11. we had a show here called police rescue. it was all about techical rescue and was something similar to chicago fire from what i understand......we used to sit at work on duty and watch it as it was the funniest thing to see them do things all wrong........water off a ducks back

so it happens all over the world in all types of vocations...........if only to be a doctor on greys anatomy...........

  12. Listen, I know that this is fiction, I know that it's a bunch of hooey and it's entertainment but come on, they have professional advisors on the show, they can't even get the simple things right that don't even take a simple minded fool to get right.

For the record, it's their show, their money for production and their scripts. yes they may have advisors, but they don't have to listen to what they say...after all they want to do a show that gets as many people watching a possible, then more will pay for advertising during the show, and they then make more money........

For pure entertainment purposes, I'll watch the show if there is NOTHING else on, but I had a Quantum of Solace rental to finish but I won't turn it on for any other reason.

So you are complaining about a fictional show on EMS and how they do outreageous things that are deemed incorrect to us in the know....BUT........I didnt realise that being a spy for British Secret Service lead you to gamble millions of dollars at high rolling casinos, bed the most beautiful women, kill as many bad guys as possible and have all the 'best' toys to play with...not to mention do things that are physically impossible to the human body...........

besides, there are heaps of TV shows that stretch the boundry on reality..........just enjoy it and laugh at what they do....let the public think what they like...........all good in love and war.............cheers

  13. well is it a documentry or a fictious show....then that will give you your answer as what you need to "get".

remember, action gets the show watched by the mainstream public.........where else do you slove a case with scientific equipment that can do something in 15 minutes the in reality takes weeks, like they do on CSI..............

for goodness sake it is a bloody tv show................laught at it and get on with life........we know how things really work

  14. either way at a rate of 280 i dont think that the patient is 'some what stable' considering his other signs
