The Mouthwash Riddle, SOLVED! (kinda gross, btw)

When I worked in the grocery business in Tampa, the homeless people would buy - yes, actually pay for it - a loaf of Cuban bread and a bottle of generic Listerine. They would soak the bread in the mouthwash, tie off the bag and let it sit in the sun and ferment. They would drink the rest of the mouthwash - to get high now - and save the bread to eat later - two highs for the price of one, so to speak.

Also encountered mouthwash drinkers in north Alabama. And for some reason they would pay also. Go figure!

I always look forward to the days after christmas and new years, the good old boys at the nursing homes around here play cards for the aftershave they get as presents. Then the next few days we get called for the winners, buzzed out and non-responsive from the fruits of their winnings.

Man, drinkin' aftershave, just shoot me in the head when i end up at the poker table in the old folks home!

[/font:0b297962d2] This topic is definitely interesting. But coming from a household where a parent is an alcoholic, this topic is also sad. Deep down these people have some sorrows they're trying to drink away. Alcoholism is a disease and instead of society helping these people (who knows maybe they need someone to talk to) we poke fun. I myself have complained about the frequent flier who's drunk every night and we got sick of transporting him, but to sit down and listen to his lifestory blew me away. Im not pointing fingers at people in here at all. Im just saying you have to have a little compassion. I know that only goes so far though and your nerves eventually get shot. But working in EMS you'll see this type of stuff all the time and it gets so old but just talk to the person and maybe talk them into a detox program. You just might save their life. MY father eventually died due to drinking and driving so the only thing i can do is vent about this in here. like i said, no hard feelings against anyone here, just an interesting topic is all and very interesting points everyone has posted :D im done ranting and this wasn't meant to attack anyone, just venting and giving an idea :) everyone take care and be safe out there, God Bless!

I worked in a detox center for 5 years. Met a gentleman there (frequent flyer) that explained the Listerine thing to me. I asked him why he drank Listerine instead of real booze. This gentleman had a decent job and income. He explained to me that the Listerine gave him a different type of buzz than store bought liquor. He drank up to two quarts a day.

Here's another winner. My RN had just finished a patient intake assessment. She called me to the med room to ask me something. During the assessment, patients are asked about their drug(s) of choice, frequency, and how it's taken. Well, this guy only "drank" wine. When she asked if by mouth, he told her "no". Seems the gentleman hated the taste of wine. He was "drinking" his wine via an enema. That had to be one of the weirdest "strange but true" ways to get drunk. Cheers.

Wah ha ha ha ha hahaha..!!! I can't wait to transition to urban ems! I'd like to work for a year in NY, Seattle, Devner, Miami, LA/SD, SF... That's awesome, I'm surprised I don't see that here in little Union City, OH. Our population is 30% Elderly, 40% Illegal Immigrant/Low Income, 15% No Income, 15% Working Class....
