A WEXFORD paramedic team has been commended for saving the life of a patient who was recuscitated an amazing 38 times while being transferred by ambulance from Wexford General Hospital to St. Vincent’s in Dublin.

The critically-ill patient was defibrillated a total of 58 times altogether, in an extraordinary medical episode which prompted a coronary care staff member at St. Vincent’s to write a letter of praise to the HSE in Kilkenny.

The letter highlighted the excellence of the lifesaving treatment received by the patient, who was admitted to Wexford General Hospital with a heart condition.

He suffered several cardiac arrests in Wexford before being transferred to St. Vincent’s for urgent medical procedures.

He survived after receiving 38 shocks in the ambulance. He required further defibrillation in the coronary care unit in St. Vincent’s over the next 24 hours.

Hospital staff considered it amazing that the man survived so many shocks without suffering detrimental effects. He was discharged a fortnight later after successful treatment.

Coronary care staff in St. Vincent’s commended the ambulance crew, including Liam O’ Neill and David Rey along with Nurse Ann Barry and Dr. Heni whose efforts on the long journey to Dublin ensured that the man survived.

A staff member at St. Vincent’s now hopes to complete a written case study on the medical success story.

Between treatment in the ER and then up in ICU, my partner and I helped with a patient that was defibed 52 times. But in the end he didn't make it. It got to the point that one of the ICU nurses (actually I think he was the supervisor that night) almost begged the doc to stop. But for some reason the doc just kept going. We said the patient had "Kentucky Fried Heart".

He was discharged "a fortnight later"?

People really talk like that? ("Nurse, please change admission status from 23 hour observation to full fortnight admission")

'zilla

Yes he was discharged a fortnight later after losing several stone in weight to the vapors.
