Usually any mention of the Q word, S word or B word (quiet, slow and busy) will get you slammed beyond all reason.

Also, it seems like if you say you haven't seen any other trucks around (this is for the privates) your area, you're almost sure to get that transport of a 380 pound woman who had both her knees replaced and is dead weight. And guess what? No lift assist because you're the only truck in the area.

Never, never, never mention the name of a "frequent flier" who hasn't been to th ED in a while. As soon as someone says their name, you can count on picking them up before the end of your shift! And the more difficult the extrication from their single-wide mobile home back bedroom at the end of the hallway with the rotted floor mansion, the more likely that you will receive that call after consuming way too much of something way too unhealthy!! And don't forget the stink factor. If they offend my olfactory senses, you can bet the call will come in at the begining of my shift, so I will be reminded of their visit throught the duration of my 24 hour tour!!

One of the gals that works on our service has the art of predicting calls. As she's leaving she'll announce what types of calls we will have and sure enough, that's what we get. Some of my co-workers have threatened to tape her mouth shut if she doesn't quit saying things. It's actually kind of funny.

I don't really think it's superstitions, I think it's the way of the world.

hmmm, we have to agree with the Qs, Ss, and Bs, as well as the food and bathroom (we've learned to hold it a looooong time)

...my partner and I have noticed that the full moon brings out the seizures and the preterm labors around here.

And, for me personally, if I take any overtime shift, I am sure to have to change my uniform at least once because that will be the day I get puked on, spurted on, or otherwise covered in some nastiness!

I just hate it when that happens. And you're right, it never fails to happen.

I haven't seen this one yet...this is big where I work...if you have a pillow and you put it on the cot with the OPEN end of the pillow case facing the front of the ambulance, you will be doomed to "catch" all the bad calls. Some people swear by it here, but I haven't seen anything...

If you get a transfer call out of town, it's almost guaranteed there will be a working structure fire or MVC with extrication while you are gone.

It is all you'll hear for the next three shifts "man you should have seen it, two story house heavy smoke showing"
