We are not allowed to go past the band aid hospital 90 miles away. But even after getting there they still have 2.5 to 3 hours to nearest trauma surgeon, cardiologist, really anything beyond general family practice. If helicopter or fixed wing is able to meet us at the hospital you can shave an hour to hour and a half off that time. But often they will be at the band aid hospital for an hour or two before air can get there.

So yes your pretty well dead if you are in bad shape even if we get you to the band aid hospital alive.

I know what RURAL EMS is. I have worked in Rural Arkansas since 1995 and let me tell you a thing or two. There is rural and there is RURAL. Some of the place that we go to get out patients have to be accesses on the back of ATV's. I work in the area just north of Mt. Magazine State Park in Logan County Arkansas and while it is beatuiful to look at, sometimes it is very difficult to work in. We have lots of visitors from other states and they like to think they come from rural areas. Just a couple of unplanned steps around the mountain and they are really RURAL

That's more like Wilderness rescue... not rural ems.. a different monkey altogether
