  1. If I ppour spot remover on my dog will he disappear?
  2. Why do we park our car in a driveway and drive our car on a parkway? Why do we say a skinny person has the appetite of a bird, when many birds eat up to 5 times there body weight in a day.
  3. Oh, if we are moving to fashion.... Members Only jackets Parachute Pants
  4. Super Chicken and his sidekick Fred with the backward F on his shirt. Touche Turtle, anyone? I remember Ultraman!! Anyone one remeber the cartoon show Starblazers? They turned the WWII battleship Yamoto into a spaceship. I don't remember what the mission was, but they had to go somewhere and return to earth in a specified time.
  5. I realized the mistake after the first one, thats why I am vent here. Have not had a chance to talk with anyone at the station. No one was around when I was dropped off at the station when it was all over. I should be going by tonight and I am sure someone will ask. Spell check unavailable
  6. Not sure if you would call it fun!! Broke a good sweat. (Damn those jumpsuits are hot) My shins still hurt from bracing against the stretcher! I know I di my best and the other EMT and the Medic did theirs!! I am not sure about fun!!
  7. Think of changing DECAPBTLS to DE CAP (like no caps as in guns/rounds) BS(self explanatory)!! As you do a head to toe check, you are also doing a pat search. Maybe a little different, and most watching would never know. And I would say things out loud as you do it, so you have a witness, "No deformites, blood, etc in upper right arm. No tenderness or swelling on lower back, no abdominal tenderness, no cepitis in hips." Just my $.02
  8. Thanks all! I appreciate the support. I know I did what I was supposed to. Since the the ambulance was from an other station and the medic was unfamiliar neither knoew it was my first code until it was over and I told them. They both said I did fine. Hardest part, sometimes was just maintaining balance while the rig was moving. Driver did a great job, just the roads do not always cooperate. From what I gather the person had not been doing well. On home O2, looks like they had a diabetic amputation of a lower leg, and a few other problems. I had a nasty accident a few weeks ago and did not really talk about it and it ate at me for a few days, so I figured if I got this off my chest I might handle it better. Felt bad because now for her children, Mothers DAy will never be the same. Sarge Spell check not available, sorry
  9. Yesterday I had my first working code. Call went out as subject not breathing. Ambulance from another station arrived first. When we got there they were preparing to bring pt out of the house. I was asked to go with them for extra hands. ALS arrived and got in and rode with us. PT had been down 5-15 minutes before first unit arrived. We worked it all the way to the hospital, but it was not successful. I am dealing with it pretty well for my first one. I was affected more by a nasty car accident a few weeks ago and that pt lived! Just needed to vent a little.
  10. I recall recently seeing a link to a student run program at VA Tech and I think either Georgetown or George Washington (or both) in DC have similar programs. With the way the DC EMS system sometimes works, it is probably a good thing for the students there to have the programs. Found the links http://www.rescue.vt.edu/ http://germs.georgetown.edu/ I guess I was wrong about GWU Sarge
  11. I recently started working at a motocross track part time. Most of the races are motorcycles, but they do have some quads. The EMTs/Medics all have quads except for a four seater "Mule" which has an area to but a patient for transport. I had never ridden a quad until a few weeks ago. The owner of the track is getting us helmets. I am almost always the last guy on the scene because I worry about driving the thing. I can not help anyone if I do not make it there, right. The station I run with has had several calls in the last year alone dealing with ATV's. One night it was dark and took a long time to find the guy. I am trying to get the station to pony up for a few GPS units. We can get the coordinates from the cell phone. Sarge.
  12. I hate it because for every call there are two reports to put in. One is for the state and one for our in house tracking.
  13. My station requires EVOC. I think the MD class is 33 hours. We also have an extensive in house drivers training program, partly due to the Big A$$ Ambulances we have. A lot of the local stations have smaller ambulances and are less picky about EVOC and Drivers training. Sarge
  14. The only thing I would use it for is putting damn reports in the computer.
  15. Rode with a couple of Medics who seat belt the lifepack in so it can not go anywhere.
  16. Always on the way to call. Wear it when I can in transport. Wish there was a better system, but I can not think of one. Sarge
  17. I think it could be beneficial. Should make part of requirement to be a member that certain class must be taken, A&P, Biology, etc. Also, could benefit student if school offered tuition assistance for members. My $.02 Sarge
  18. Not bald yet, but I keep a "high and tight flat top." When I first get it cut, it is almost to the skin at the very top of my head to make it flat. I had a Barber pull out the electric razor like you would use on your face, and do the sides once. I loved it, was able to go an extra week with out a hair cut. Big change from the Mullet of my early college days!! Sarge.
  19. If they are just looking to get someone out of line of fire, the SKED might be an option. It is relatively light and compact. Check the info: http://www.skedco.com/sk200.htm Military teaches Combat life Savers (our first responders) to use them to get folks to where the medics can take over care. This is something that could even be carried by a team member or dropped at the door, etc to have it close. I have seen units that do not keep it in the carrier for quicker deployment.
  20. Maryland has its own state exam. The state practical qualified for my NR when I took it. I only took it because I am in the military and might have to move. MD has a state run EMS system. MIEMS- Maryland Institute of Emergency Medical Services (Someone from MD correct me if I got the acronym wrong). The set our protocols, we send all our patient reports through them, they run the testing. Seems to be a pretty good system. I have always heard that MD is a leader in Emergency Medicine. I know the R.A Crawley shock trauma center in Baltimore is one of the best.
  21. And, of course, get rid of the silly EMT title altogether since we will now be educated professionals instead of trained technicians. When I said this, I got hounded for trying to play semantics. (Also, good thing I am over weight or I might have never looked at this thread. Maybe title could have been different to better show what thread is about)
  22. I would be hard to get a job at a paid EMS system because 1-Most in this area are Fire based, so they have crazy schedules. 2-Uncle Sam would frown on #1. 3-I am trying to get some part time work with a few other ambulance agencies, but they are all transfer services. I guess you have a problem with my blog? I Volunteered to join the National Guard almost 14 yrs ago, after September 11, 2001 I volunteered for several different missions, in 2004 I volunteered to become a full time Soldier and I now Volunteer as an EMT. In my life I have done lots of things that dust suggested, I have been member of more than one organization that "adopted -a -highway" (damn, took work from the convicts!!), I have volunteered with special Olympics, and some other organizations, so I don't need some ugly jumpsuit and a big truck with lights to make me feel good about myself. I found through some military training I enjoyed medicine and seemed to be good at it, so I found a way to put it to good use. Because of my rank and status in the military I do not have the option right now of becoming a medic, I have already fought that battle a few times. I find it amazing that volunteers keep getting put down when they say they like to help people, makes it sound like paid folks are only after a pay check. I think it is hypocritical to say folks getting paid are in it for the patient, but volunteers are in it for themselves and their egos. Anyway, I have said as much as I am going to say. I will volunteer until the county puts the paid crew in the station, which won't be long. I guess we should quit running, let a few folks die and it would speed up the process. Sarge, out. For good on this topic.
  23. I am not my own worst enemy. I enjoy being a volunteer. I have a career as a Soldier for now, and since I have recently discovered what I want to do for my second career, I am a volunteer. At least I can continue to get experience, while I help people until the county pushes us out for paid, or until I retire and take a paid job somewhere. We do have some paid people in the county and the program is expanding. the point I was making was in reference to some previous posts, one of which I quoted. Sarge
