  1. I'm not sure when South Carolina first certified paramedics, but there were several that were "county certified" before the state recognized the paramedic level. It wasn't anywhere near the level of a Paramedic that we recognize today, pretty much an intermediate in today's EMS.
  2. I use mine field guide for spelling, there is a list of commonly misspelled words in the back of the one I use. There are some words that just don't look right no matter how I spell it and I will check my spelling on them. Besides some rare meds, that's what I use mine for. Being in the military right out of high school/ college and reading message traffic in the early 90's killed my spelling ability and it still sucks. Also another reason I use firefox browser, built in spell checker without having to hit the spell check button.
  3. Our county does random testing too, but I believe the thinking is that the county is off the hook if you were high. I don't know how that will hold up in court though.
  4. Yes, in the county I work for any county employee involved in an on the job vehicle crash, or on the job injury, you go pee in the cup, and take BAC test.
  5. I'm thankful for my healthy children.
  6. The liberal bias isn't just my thoughts, it's been proven time after time. However, if they were using parts from a legal (no matter how you word it, it's murder) procedure that wouldn't be so bad, but they are creating human embryo's just for the stem cells to kill the embryo for research when there are better and other ways to do the same research without destroying a human life. An example like I gave before are the stem cells from cord blood.
  7. No one says stem cell research is bad, it's embryonic stem cell research that is what all the flack is about. Of course the liberal biased media just wants to lump it all into one. There are an untold amount of stem cells from a newborn's cord blood that have shown way more promise than that from aborted fetuses.
  8. We need medics in SC too, shoot me a PM if you want some info.
  9. I can see myself being on both sides of this. I can also tell you that I would have handled things different according to what stage of my career you may have caught me in. If I were the medic from the hospital service, early on in my career, I probably would have done the exact same thing he did, and look like an ass in the process. During this part of my career, I would have opened the back doors and checked to see if the medic needed any help. If he did, I would have ridden with him to the LZ, if not I would have gotten out and closed the doors. If I were the medic from the county/ fire service, I pretty much would have handled it the same way no matter what stage of my career you caught me in. I would have told the ignorant deputy to move her ass from in front of my ambulance or her husband was going to have a patient to take care of. I wish they would have told how long both of the medics involved have been licensed. That would probably explain their actions somewhat.
  10. If y'all are going to quote us rednecks, at least get it right. It's "hey y'all watch this, and while you're at it, hold my liquor drink".
  11. I'm happy to hear this positive feedback on the EZ IO. Our Medical Control physician just approved us to purchase and start using it after the training class. We were torn between the EZ IO and the BIG. It's good to know that this will be an useful tool for us.
  12. Looks like someone got their pee-pee spanked.
  13. I'm glad to see that you have found a preceptor that is taking an active role in your education and not a passive, just let's get through the shift one. I know I have seen co-workers precept students that were too busy trying to make sure they were seen as super-medic to properly evaluate and educate the student. I like the way that your preceptor handled the shift. It is similar to how I try to precept, except I like to have the student for more than one shift and I like for the student to "watch" for the first few calls and be more of a team member and gradually during the shift, transition the student to more of a team leader. Which seems to be similar to what you got, but it seemed that wasn't what was offered to you in the beginning. Overall I think you had what anyone would call a positive clinical experience. Glad to hear it went well for you and I hope this is just the first of many positive preceptors you have.
  14. You know you can eat just about anything with grits, I for one eat them with butter, salt and pepper, mix in some scrambled eggs, some sausage and biscuits on the side, you have a meal. Some people eat them with cheese, some sugar or brown sugar, ketchup (catsup for y'all yankees), brown gravy, sausage gravy. You name it, you can have it with grits and it taste good. As for the other grits, well I married one of them. Another thing too, you have to know the difference between down the road and up the road and which one is farther away. Jus' down the road a little piece is closer than up the road a ways.
  15. I wouldn't go as far as to say that they are sending you out way too early. I think the paramedics precepting you are poorly prepared. Not a knock on them, but they should be given a idea of where you are in class and what you have covered from your instructor. Do they just kick you out the door and say "good luck, hope you learn something in clinicals" or do they actually follow up on the experience? If I'm precepting a new paramedic or a paramedic student, I start them off basically doing nothing. Then allow them to transition from a crew member up to being in charge of patient care (within reason and under supervision of course). That way it's letting you get comfortable with your current role before being exposed to more than you are ready for. It is the same way here in SC, either you start your clinicals early or you don't get finished in time to take the NR test that they have scheduled for you. So we end up with paramedic students that have taken maybe one module and an A&P course.
  16. That makes no sense right there. I do know one where you take the pt's weight in kg's multiply it by the desired dose (micro grams/min) for example: 100kg person x 5 mcg/min = 500 or $5. There are 20 quarters in $5 then the drip rate would be 20gtts/min. This is for a 800:1 mixture . 1600:1 mixture would be double. Maybe yours is similar but somewhere you've got to plug a dosage in there.
  17. Another thing I'd like to add to what these guys/gals are saying. While you're performing the sticks feel for the "pop" once you enter the vein. I found that when I was first starting with IV's, that I would actually feel the "pop" of the needle entering the vein. I find myself now not focusing on the flash chamber at all until I feel that flash. Just like you've been told on here, just find your vein and perform the stick, the more you do it the more you'll get the feel for the little things you may not notice right away.

  19. Like Dust said, it shouldn't be a problem as long as your training institution doesn't have a problem with it. It would also be good to see a different "frame of mind" on doing things. There may be some things you could take back to your area that they could do better/different and vice versa.
  20. Seriously though, give us the question that you seem to be having trouble with and the possible answers for said question. I've had several students that have come through the assessment station that go straight for the BVM when respiratory rates are just slightly above normal. From what it appears with the limited information you provided, the patient seems to be breathing adequately but just slightly above normal. Without any more information, I would say that providing supplemental O2 with NRB would be sufficient in this situation, but you would also have to consider mental status etc. etc. Like someone else stated earlier, though it may sound all nice and pretty, you're not going to want to try to bag a CAOx3 patient if respiratory rate is 30.
  21. WHO'S YO BABY'S DADDY? The following are all replies that Detroit women have written on Child Support Agency Forms in the section for listing "Father's Details", or putting it another way.... Who's yo Daddy? These are genuine excerpts from the forms. Be sure to check out #11. It takes 1st prize and #3 is runner up. 1. Regarding the identity of the father of my twins, Makeeshia was fathered by Maclearndon McKinley I am unsure as to the identity of the father of Marlinda, but I believe that she was conceived on the same night. 2. I am unsure, as to the i dentity of the father of my child as I was being sick out of a window when taken unexpectedly from behind. I can provide you with a list of names of men that I think were at the party if this helps. 3. I do not know the name of the father of my little girl. She was conceived at a party at 3600 East Grand Boulevard where I had sex with a man I met that night. I do remember that the sex was so good that I fainted. If you do manage to track down the father, can you please send me his phone number? Thanks. 4. I don't know the identity of the father of my daughter. He drives a BMW that now has a hole made by my stiletto in one of the door panels. Perhaps you can contact BMW service stations in this area and see if he's had it replaced. 5. I have never had sex with a man. I am still a Virginian. I am awaiting a letter from the Pope confirming that my son's conception was ejaculate and that he is the Saver risen again. 6. I cannot tell you the name of Alleshia's dad as he informs me that to do so would blow his cover and that would have cataclysmic implications for the economy. I am torn between doing right by you and right by the country. Please advise. 7. I do not know who the father of my child was as they all look the same to me. 8. Tyrone Hairston is the father of child A If you do catch up with him, can you ask him what he did with my AC/DC CDs? Child B who was also borned at the same time.... well, I don't have clue. 9. From the dates it seems that my daughter was conceived at Disney World. Maybe it really is the Magic Kingdom. 10. So much about that night is a blur. The only thing that I remember for sure is Delia Smith did a program about eggs e arlier in the evening. If I had stayed in and watched more TV rather than going to the party at 8956 Miller Ave, mine might have remained unfertilized. 11. I am unsure as to the identity of the father of my baby, after all, it's like when you eat a can of beans you can't be sure which one made you fart. Yep, you guessed it right - you are all paying taxes to support these dim wits!
