My name is Sharon and I just joined one of our local Fire Dept last Tuesday. I am going to be a volunteer EMT. Monday is my 1st night of orientation. Tuesday will be my first duty night. Is there any advice that would be helpful to make these 1st 2 nites go smoothly?

Is this you first ever EMT job? Or is it just first Fire Dept.? Listen, learn, pay attention. Take it easy and don't get stressed out. Things may be different with them than any other place.

This is actually my 1st Fire Dept. Tonight I get my gear and fill out paper work and tommorow night will be my 1st 12 hour duty night. If we get a call, my job will be just to watch and observe. The Trainer told me that I have to keep up. Any good advice for that? The Dept is small. There are more volunteers then career personel. My duty crew will have 4. Most of the people from what I have observed are younger then me. I just hope that I will be able to fit in.. I get excited and find my thoughts racing because of the unknown. I am a people peson and very likeable and I was told that is half the battle. I have been wanting to this since I was younger. I grew up watching the show Emergency.

You haven't had any training yet? Best thing to do is keep your eyes open, pay strict attention to what you are told to do and learn all you can. Questions are a good thing, just be sure and ask them at an appropriate time. First thing to do is familiarize yourself with the equipment, where gear is stowed so you can help the crew by grabbing stuff at need.

Butterfly, sounds like you're off to a good start. Things can get exciting, but being a rookie you might be given some of the menial tasks, such as a go-fer. Almost everyone starts out that way. Don't let it get you down or be disappointed if it seems like the exciting stuff is passing you by. Learn all you can about your unit. Ask questions. During your down time go over all the equipment, what's what and what's where. Find out what is expected of you. When things make you feel a little overwhelmed, just step back and take a breath and keep going.

The main thing is to have fun. Good luck, be careful. Don't worry about the young'uns. Many people have started at a later age and done just fine. :wink: If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask anyone on your dept. or anyone here.
