I was in charge of the family ambulance for 25 of it's 56 years. I had grey hair before I was 30. If it were not for the free equipment through Civil Defense, we would have had to give it up due to operating expenses and insurance.

Some people already stole what I was gonna say But I'll reiterate anyway... In the beginning, don't bother doing your own billing and auditing, hire that out. It will become too much at first, unless you have the capital to hire your own staff to solely handle these jobs. It is easy to do the insurance and medicare/caid stuff wrong, and easy to get caught. But as you get bigger, and have more resources, you will definately want to move it in house at some point. Your job will be daunting enough (not that I need to tell you that), try to keep it simple, rely on companies that can keep the minutiae off your plate.

I've been in EMS 25 years -- the best advice I can pass along is -- BE NICE -- and DO WHAT IS RIGHT; NOT WHAT IS EASY. The culture you instill at your new service is very important. You should set high standards but ALWAYS be nice. Make sure that everyone that works for you has the same "Mission Value" -- The bitchin that goes on in some services translates to low morale and poor patient care. I have seen the effects when a service places a premium on "SERVICE" and has a stated expectation of maintaining a friendly and courteous workplace.

Also, you may find yourself in a situation where doing the "right" thing is very difficult -- you may even say -- "it would just be easier if we..." When this happens, you should do the "right thing" regardless of how hard it is, how much it costs or how much pressure your under to do otherwise --
