nypamedic43
Was just wondering how this news effects people? We've been there for so long...is it a good idea?
akflightmedic
Do not worry, while the COMBAT troops have left Iraq, there are still 5,000-10,000 active duty "Advisers" left behind and about 35,000+ civilian contractors to do the jobs which still need to be done. Not to mention the 10K plus soldiers who have been shifted to Kuwait to stay close for an indefinite amount of time. Also the 6 publicly known "enduring bases" and the not public bases which will never leave Iraq. And our large Navy fleet who hangs out in Bahrain for quick action... So while active combat units have left, do not kid yourself into thinking the USA as a whole is gone from there.
systemet
I hope that some relative stability remains in the region. I'm a little afraid of the law of unintended consequences, and what's going to happen with Iran and nuclear proliferation.
paramedicmike
We're going to have a military presence in the Middle East for years to come. I think Systemet is right to be concerned about stability in the region, too. It'll be interesting to see how Iran continues to react to the "new" Iraq. chbare
Sounds like when the UN withdrew combat forces from korea...... Except, thousands of contractors and "advisers" were not left behind in North Korea.
BushyFromOz
Except, thousands of contractors and "advisers" were not left behind in North Korea. No, there were thousands of combat trops stationed very close to korea. Whats the number there at the moment... 30K or something like that? I know that 3 years after the ceasefire by grandfather was still patrolling kansas.
chbare
The biggest difference is still the large number of contractors. The contractor concept has really changed the face of modern conflict IMHO.
Just Plain Ruff
A favorite quote "Contractors - if you aren't part of the solution, there's plenty of money to be made prolonging the problem"
AnatomyChick
It's nice to have the bigger part of the troops out of there, but as has been said we are a LONG ways from truly "out of Iraq".
