Southern Nativity

In a small southern town there was a "Nativity Scene" that showed great skill and talent had gone into creating it.

One small feature bothered me.

The three wise men were wearing firemen's helmets.

Totally unable to come up with a reason or explanation, I left.

At a "Quik Stop" on the edge of town, I asked the lady behind the counter about the helmets.

She exploded into a rage, yelling at me, "You darn Yankees never do read the Bible!"

I assured her that I did, but simply couldn't recall anything about firemen in the Bible.

She jerked her Bible from behind the counter and ruffled thru some pages, and finally jabbed her finger at a passage. Sticking it in my face, she said "See, it says right here, 'The three wise man came from afar.'"

I've got a Southern Dictionary somewhere that explains simple words so that those living north of the Mason-Dixon Line can understand. It's hilarious. But it'll get you thinking too.

Genesis 1 (English Standard Version)

Genesis 1

The Creation of the World

1In the(A) beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2The earth was(B) without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

3And God said,© "Let there be light," and there was light. 4And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. 5God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

I have even tried talking "South in the mouth" out loud, but cannot determine any baseball references. Care to explain?

When doing clinicals we had a gal from GA come in with a laceration on her face. Her husband went to close the trunk of the car and she was too close. The corner of it sliced right down her cheek. She had that deep southern accent and the laceration was preventing her from talking more clearly. But the doc was a total yankee so I literally had to translate for her. The whole thing gave us enough ammunition to tease that doc for about nine months.
