  1. You can express yourself without having to be offensive. I think the warning system is long overdue. Just because you are a "Top Poster" doesn't mean you should be able to say whatever you want, whenever you want. Every time one of the "gang" get's into trouble the same people come out with these posts trying to rally the "troops" against admin. I think it's highly immature and high school if you ask me. Admin has instituted a policy, if you can't conform to that policy, go elsewhere. Self moderation hasn't been working, because you always have a couple who just can't seem to moderate themselves, of course those same people have no problem trying to moderate others. Dan
  2. The original post was good natured. Sure some of the things that have been listed as "classic pranks" are illegal, and would at the least violate some federal and state laws regarding workplace violence and stuff like that. With that said... The post was just asking about "classic pranks" To me that means, stuff back in the day that isn't done now, for the most part. I think we are all "professional" enough to know which of these pranks we could use and which ones would get us sent to jail. This is a good natured thread, so the constant posting about people being "unprofessional" is needless. There have been disclaimers posted, and that is enough. Post away folks, I always enjoy reading about the "Classic Pranks" Dan
  3. Tell her in advance the next call she can tech, she WILL tech. Throw her into the fire. It's time to sink or swim. It worked for me and I"m sure everyone else on this site, we all swam, or tried too, lol. As long as she's putting forth effort I wouldn't worry about her too much. It is very intimidating having your first EMS job fresh out of school. (We all remember) I really don't think you can speed it along to much, but set her free and see how she does. Dan
  4. Yes it sounds like you stepped on some toes. I would have left after they told you they would handle it. You offered your assistance and it was turned down. PD was on scene and they should be the ones fighting with pt's... Not you, the EMT. If you are in a position that you are fighting a pt PD needs to take over and control that person, but you did what you thought was right and it all worked out in the end. That's what this job is all about, doing what you think is the right thing, and as long as it works out in the end, it's all good. Take Care Dan
  5. Here in KS I believe EMT-B's may use a LMA, however I have yet to hear of a service that carries them on the trucks here. At my service we carry ET tubes and the EOA. Maybe EMTI4NOW could answer more definately for KS since I"m having a hard time remembering. I know B's here can use the follow airway devices OPA NPA EOA EGTA Combi-Tube
  6. Looks like I stand partially corrected...at least in Canada anyways. As far as I know no healthcare provider in the USA is using that method because the AHA sets those standards and their standards for healthcare providers is what i described above. Someone in the USA correct me if I"m wrong please Dan
  7. Icyhot, The new method you're referring to has been in the works for awhile now and is nothing new. It is aparently going to be the new standard for layperson CPR. It should not and is not (as far as I know) being taught to Emergency Medical Technicians. However you must remember not all Fire Depts make their Firefighters take the BLS Provider course, some only take the "layperson" course so that might be where the confusion is coming from. As professionals, we should at the very least be certifiying with the AHA BLS Provider method, which is with rescues breaths. Dan
  8. My service deals with both short and long transport times. If we get called in the city our times are 3-5minutes. In the County it's 10-20minutes. I personally wish I had longer in back than 3-5minutes. It's frustrating not being able to get everything done because you're at the back door of the ER. I just hurry the best I can and get the most important things done first. Dan
  9. Career. County Wide Service. County funded, hospital based. Dan
  10. The county I work in is 852 sq miles. We have 2 stations in the county. One in the Southeast Corner and one in the middle. We have 24 hour call backs for both stations and the ability to move trucks around from station to station if the need arises. Dan
  11. I think it is highly unlikely and unprofessional for a couple to work on the same shift let alone as partners. I haven't heard of a place that would allow a couple being partners, although I"m sure in bigger services it happens. I"m in a situation where my partner is married to a Capt. at the same service, and that causes enough problems as is with favorites. So I"m under the opinion that a couple should not even be allowed to work at the same service if one is in a position of power. Just my thoughts since I"m on the receiving end of Schmoopie and Schmoopie Doo at work. Dan
  12. Specialty Bariatric transport units are great. I have never had the privilege to work on one or see one in person, but have read about them in JEMS and wish our service would think about converting an old unit into one. As many of us know, our Pt's are getting bigger and bigger, and it seems we are getting more out of shape and smaller by the day, well at least I am getting out of shape anyway. We still have to use the ole, call the fire dept for lifting assist technique here. Which is rarely done because it makes us look bad... according to my partner. I see the day where most services will probably have Bariatric Transport Units, due to the increase in pt weight nationally, but until then... I hope our backs hold out. Dan
