  1. Had a family member ask me to check on her uncle. She went with me along with the health nurse, the nurse was a bit freaky and asked if I would crawl throught the window. I yelled for the guy and asked if he could hear me, he said yep. I turned to the nurse and said if you want to get in there go to the cops and see if they will break down the door but I'm not going in. And back to work I went. The guy finally opened up the door for his nefew and the reason he didnt want anyone in there is because he had been very ill in his bedroom and was unable to get to the bathroom in time. He was embarrassed, and that was the end of that.

One other reason I am not breaking down the door is that even if I have a visual of the pt and they are down, I dont know why they are down and I am not dying for anyone unless I gave birth to them :turned:

  2. Sensitive, sensitive! Think I care about some negative points on my profile here? Sorry, not in it to win a popularity contest. Bite me.

    back on to topic.....................

I've used to KED ONCE. Our local trauma center called our firehouse to goto a church for a pastor that was released earlier in the day. They said he had a cervical fx. s/p fall that they missed on the X-Ray. He was sitting up and as a super precaution we used the KED to immobilized him and move to a backboard.

I see the KED as a waste of time. You can accomplish the task far easier and less whippish if you apply a c-collar, hold manual stabilzation and jam a backboard into the car and guide the patient down. Fumbling around with that KED how much are you twisting, and moving that patient around. Proper handling of the pt. will work much better in this situation. So first you still use a collar, you still manual stabilize, and by jamming a ked down the pts back and then tighening the straps you have less movement of the spine as your placeing the pt on the board. You can use both. Now keep in mind this piece of equipment is for stable pts only. So if your pt is critical your not useing the KED in the first place.

The real problem, is the ridic. notion in EMS that everyone in any sort of fall/MVC must be backboarded. How about allowing a more thorough exam and letting us clear C-Spine in the field (you cant clear C-spine in the field?) instead of these ridic. backboards,(cant you use a scoop or clam shell instead of a back board?) that quite frankly probably do more harm then good in a cervical injury.

p.s. i've heard the KED is good for immobilizing little kids. It is awsome for immobilizing little kids and babies.

    earth to common sense?

  3. If you look at Wiki you will notice that the Ontario PCP will be trained for the 12 lead. We are in BC and we are not trained for it. Now I did my PCP along time ago and they have started to do the training.

  4. Well just thought I would post this and see where this discussion could go. I have never really gotten into the politics in the US or Canada (but yes I do vote). So here is a good question? Do you think it should be okay for someone basically off the streets have the ability to run for President or Prime minister? Or do you think that you need to be a lawyer and go to school for political science etc in order to run for office........................

    http://theclicker.today.com/_news/2011/08/05/7265828-roseannes-totally-serious-about-presidential-run

  5. What do you mean with "remarkable" on RBS (= Random Blood Sugar?)?This is the Rapid body survey and he probably wanted to say it was unremarkable

How old was the patient? Did you have a 12 lead ECG? What was the SpO2 before you applied oxygene? I think in the field they use the 3 lead if trained for it. PCP's do not use 12 lead

How did he confirmed this and - not so technically questioned - why the hell did he loose time then? Didn't they have surgical capabilities when they're called a hospital? An AAA doesn't have much time to intervene or get a second transport anywhere .Our hospital here has no surgical abilities. We go by Heli for the emergencies. So where PCP is they may have the surgery but may not have the ability to do a AAA repair. In my career I have had 3 AAA. One survived but it hadnt dicected yet. His ONLY symptom was when he would climb into his logging truck he would faint. That is accually what we were called for. He did make to the surgery in time. PCP if you read this another thing to listen for is a swooshing sound when your doing your listen for tummy sounds. You dont always here it, obese pts its hard to hear, but if you do you will never forget that sound.

    .

Crappy week PCP but you have to learn real quick if they are the road to 6 ft under sometimes your the one driving the car.

  6. Actually, they do have a point. It's been proved and proved that we offer almost no spinal care with a collar and L/B, so if we take almost none and turn it on it's side, maybe we have lost the little that we gained...not sure, but intuitively it makes sense..

So yeah, you may want to go and fess up to your class brother...scientifically speaking you led them off into the ditch... :-)

    Dwayne

I have to disagree. I still think the theroy of the full spinal is good, you cant say that by not stopping all movement of the pt is of no benefit. So I will give an example.

MVA pt goes to hospital, medics have pt packaged in full spinal. X-ray tech by direction of Dr. finished x-rays and removed the collor took all the straps off etc. Then they sit the pt up and with a scream the pt fell back and is now a parapaligic for the nipple line down. He had no neck pain, back pain, numbness or tingling. Now this might be a once in lifetime thing but it is what it is. It turned out the the T3 was fractured and with the movement completely severed the cord.

Im sure that there is good research for both sides but I still feel better doing the spinal. Also if you do them properly and with alot of care you can do a good spinal with the pt on their side.

With the KED (my favorite peice of equipment) I would use it on a pregnant woman who might be about 6 months but I'm not sure if I would in a later pregnancy. But who knows.

  7. I have been reading this thread from the begining and I have to say WOW.

Katiebug so first of all you are battling with 2 members on here about what they KNOW and live with on a daily basis, not what they think they know. It has been pointed out by both that they dont believe vaccines are the issue. But yet like Mike says you dont produce the backing that say's there is the possibility of truth in your statements and so you know WIKI sites on here are concidered garbage and also just because you can google it dosn't make it true.

Second if you are going to have a battle with Mike then produce your facts and the discussion will be a learning experience for one and all. Don't take what he says personally or as Dwyane says he will drive you Batshit.

So we all have fears about our children. (you dont mention how old your are) I have had my 3 boys vaccinated for what ever was given to them and like Annie I wish they had the chickenpox vac. For my youngest. He was 2 days old when my middle son popped out with them. So for some reason he didnt get them at that time. For years when he was younger I would take to where the chickenpox were so he would get them (a friend at 30 (male) got them and also just about died). So at 13 boom he had them everywhere, in his throat, ears, and anus. Nice eh. It was complete hell for him and us. Vaccinations are also important if you are travelling to other countries so you dont get what ever they have that can kill you. But like Mike I am also interested in your back up.

So as a person who is on the outside looking in this is what I see. I see alot of Parents like Bab's and Dwyane just loving their children. N39 was a regular here at the time and I remember having discussions with her about her frustrations. She also just loves her child. They are all open about it and are willing to share their experences with those that ask, I have also read the blog that Babs created and it is very insiteful, you should read it. I commend any parent that has taken that extra step to make those like us understand.

I have been fortunante to be around 2 children who have challanges (that may sound strange but read on). One is diagnosed with autism(and he also has other underlying factors and is non-verbal and will probably end up institutionalized if something ever happens to his parents), the other I dont know the diagnosis but her parents were told that she will never move. Once her mother took off some of the meds (anti-sezure she never had one) she started to develop. She really is one in a million. Her vision has improved, her hearing, her ability to recognized objects and people and she will walk if she is holding your hand. So the point of this.

I would like to thank all the parents with children that have challanges because by you being able to talk about and socialize your children with my per say normal children the following is what happens,

My 18 yr old son was in a Mcdonalds a few months back and in came an older woman that was definently challanged. This person sat down with her meal and was enjoying a conversation with herself. The Mcdonalds security team came over to her and harrassed her, Calling her a retard, and did she escape from the Mental institution and a few other choice wordings. So you know My son is about 5,11 maybe 160lbs has tattoos that are visable and things in his face. He looks like he could be a gang member I guess, but he is not, so you know he is persuing a career in the RCMP (face things are gone :). So he went up to the Security Team and proceeded to rip them a new ass hole. One even said it was ok for him to say these things because his brother was handicapped, yep that statement didnt go so well for him. The manager came out and told my son to leave, he had a few choice words for him also. He left like he was asked and waited outside until the woman came out so he knew she was Okay.

Parents like yourself you are helping make the younger generations understand these conditions and they are becomming advocates for your children when your not around. I remember when all children with challanges where thrown in institutions and forgotten. Thank you again for all you have done for your kids and mine :)

I have also sent this thread to a friend the mother of the young man i have mentioned and told her I would copy paste what she emailed me

  8. Uh..Happiness?

This seems to be a direct quote from some newspaper. Speaking of breaking the law, I have to ask if you've forgotten we (the EMT City community) are still in a copyright infringement lawsuit, and still raising funding for our defence?

I know you mean well, but providing a link to this article probably would have been sufficient.

Thank yoiu for your time on this issue.

Well it came to me as an email but if admin would like to delet it he is more that welcome to do so. I cant for some reason

  9. I found the solution to the crazy world. You Americans have this guy, and I think he should be cloned for ever to remind the criminals of what Prison should be all about.

SHERIFF JOE IS AT IT AGAIN!

You all remember Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Arizona, who painted the jail cells pink and made the inmates wear pink prison garb. Well.........

SHERIFF JOE IS AT IT AGAIN!

Oh, there's MUCH more to know about Sheriff Joe!

Maricopa County was spending approx. $18 million dollars a year on stray animals, like cats and dogs. Sheriff Joe offered to take the department over, and the County Supervisors said okay.

The animal shelters are now all staffed and operated by prisoners. They feed and care for the strays. Every animal in his care is taken out and walked twice daily. He now has prisoners who are experts in animal nutrition and behavior. They give great classes for anyone who'd like to adopt an animal. He has literally taken stray dogs off the street, given them to the care of prisoners, and had them place in dog shows.

The best part? His budget for the entire department is now under $3 million. Teresa and I adopted a Weimaraner from a Maricopa County shelter two years ago. He was neutered, and current on all shots, in great health, and even had a microchip inserted the day we got him. Cost us $78.

The prisoners get the benefit of about $0.28 an hour for working, but most would work for free, just to be out of their cells for the day. Most of his budget is for utilities, building maintenance, etc. He pays the prisoners out of the fees collected for adopted animals.

I have long wondered when the rest of the country would take a look at the way he runs the jail system, and copy some of his ideas. He has a huge farm, donated to the county years ago, where inmates can work, and they grow most of their own fresh vegetables and food, doing all the work and harvesting by hand.

He has a pretty good sized hog farm, which provides meat, and fertilizer. It fertilizes the Christmas tree nursery, where prisoners work, and you can buy a living Christmas tree for $6 - $8 for the Holidays, and plant it later.. We have six trees in our yard from the Prison.

Yup, he was re-elected last year with 83% of the vote. Now he's in trouble with the ACLU again. He painted all his buses and vehicles with a mural, that has a special hotline phone number painted on it, where you can call and report suspected illegal aliens. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement wasn't doing enough in his eyes, so he had 40 deputies trained specifically for enforcing immigration laws, started up his hotline, and bought 4 new buses just for hauling folks back to the border. He's kind of a 'Git-R Dun' kind of Sheriff.

TO THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO

HE IS THE MARICOPA ARIZONA COUNTY SHERIFF

AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER

THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY:

Sheriff Joe Arpaio (in Arizona ) created the 'Tent City Jail':

He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.

He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights. Cut off all but 'G' rated movies.

He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects.

Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for discrimination.

He took away cable TV until he found out there was a Federal Court Order that required cable TV for jails so he hooked up the cable TV again; only let in the Disney Channel and the Weather Channel.

When asked why the Weather Channel he replied, 'So they will know how hot it's gonna be while they are working on my Chain Gangs.'

He cut off coffee since it has zero nutritional value.

When the inmates complained, he told them 'This isn't the Ritz/Carlton......if you don't like it, don't come back!'

    More On The Arizona Sheriff:

With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix (116 degrees just set a new record), the Associated Press reports:

About 2,000 inmates living in a barbed-wire-surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to their government-issued pink boxer shorts.

On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 degrees inside the week before.

Many were also swathed in wet, pink towels as sweat collected on their chests and dripped down to their PINK SOCKS.

'It feels like we are in a furnace', said James Zanzot, an inmate who has lived in the TENTS for 1 year. 'It's Inhumane.'

Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic. He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates: 'It's 120 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and they have to wear full battle gear, but they didn't commit any crimes, so shut your mouths!'

    Way to go, Sheriff!

Maybe if all prisons were like this one there would be a lot less crime and/or repeat offenders. Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for their parole, only to go out and commit another crime so they can get back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.

  10. Well my american cuz sent this to me and thought I would post it. A very interesting idea and it may make people realize how dependent us in North america are on the imports from China.

    AUGUST 1st to September 1st

Well over 50 yrs ago I knew a lady who would not buy Christmas gifts if they were made in China. Her daughter will recognize her in the following.

Did y'all see Diane Sawyer's special report? They removed ALL items from a typical, middle class family's home that were not made in the USA .

There was hardly anything left besides the kitchen sink. Literally. During the special they showed truckloads of items - USA made - being brought in to replace everything and talked about how to find these items and the difference in price etc..

It was interesting that Diane said if every American spent just $64 more than normal on USA made items this year, it would create something like

    200,000 new jobs!

I WAS BUYING FOOD THE OTHER DAY AT WALMART and ON THE LABEL OF SOME PRODUCTS IT SAID 'FROM CHINA '

FOR EXAMPLE THE "OUR FAMILY" BRAND OF THE MANDARIN ORANGES SAYS RIGHT ON THE CAN 'FROM CHINA '

I WAS SHOCKED SO FOR A FEW MORE CENTS I BOUGHT THE LIBERTY GOLD BRAND OR THE DOLE SINCE IT'S FROM CALIF.

Are we Americans as dumb as we appear --- or --- is it that we just do not think. The Chinese, knowingly and intentionally, export inferior and even toxic products and dangerous toys and goods to be sold in American markets.

70% of Americans believe that the trading privileges afforded to the Chinese should be suspended.

Why do you need the government to suspend trading privileges? DO IT YOURSELF, AMERICA !!

Simply look on the bottom of every product you buy, and if it says 'Made in China ' or 'PRC' (and that now includes Hong Kong ), simply choose another product, or none at all. You will be amazed at how dependent you are on Chinese products, and you will be equally amazed at what you can do without.

Who needs plastic eggs to celebrate Easter? If you must have eggs, use real ones and benefit some American farmer. Easter is just an example. The point is do not wait for the government to act. Just go ahead and assume control on your own.

THINK ABOUT THIS: If 200 million Americans each refuse to buy just $20 of Chinese goods, that's a billion dollar trade imbalance resolved in our favor...fast!!

Most of the people who have been reading about this matter are planning on implementing this on Aug. 1st and continue it until Sept. 1st. That is only one month of trading losses, but it will hit the Chinese for 1/12th of the total, or 8%, of their American exports. Then they might have to ask themselves if the benefits of their arrogance and lawlessness were worth it.

Remember, August 1st to Sept. 1st !!!!!! START NOW.

Send this to everybody you know. Let's show them that we are Americans and NOBODY can take us for granted.

If we can't live without cheap Chinese goods for one month out of our lives, WE DESERVE WHAT WE GET!

    Pass it on, America ...

Well instead of doing it for just 1 month why not try to do it all the time.

  11. Since I would the a horsemonkey here, this is my opinion.

In my public speaking class we had to right a persuasive speech and mine was on why Fire and EMS should be joined together and work together. I love firefighting and EMS and if I had to choose between the two I dunno what I would do. To me I feel that EMS is a welcome and needed change in the Fire service. To me I think that EMS should be treated as well as the fire service is treated and should be allowed to grow and become a true profession.

    FireEMT2009

So I had to see if there was such a word lmao

    Horsemonkey from the Urban Dictionary

Etremely ugly woman/man with a very long angular face with Small deep sunken eyes. Is usually a stripper and has very bad pale skin.

  12. I just realized something. Where is Crotch, and why has he not commented in this string? I presume this string to be right up his alley.

He found a better playground to play in. He hasnt been around for ever..........

  13. Well I can't get a flight discount based on my job description anyway so I have to cancel. ;)

    I'm bummed.

Hey did I ever tell you I might be getting a free heli ride to one of the fishing lodges with a fish guide just because Im me.........................................

  14. So this thread really didnt start off the way I wanted it to but alas we are kind of off to the races. So by posting the non-joke it has been assumed the conversation should only involve race and religion. In reality we as a society tolerate many things on a daily basis. So I have 2 thoughts to make it go forward.

Hosemonkey's hummmm there's a nice term. They have been known in the city that they are knuckle dragging gorilla's that only has the purpose of carring my equiment at best. So what is it that has made this particular profession intorerant in the EMS world. So it's known I luv hosemonkey's. And to the hosemonkey's here please feel free to say why EMS is intolerable in your bubble.

Also as a 40ish white female it would be nice if people here of other ethnic or religious groups comment on how they are tolerant of our culture. If this thread is to have some sort of vality then it needs 2 sides.

  15. A common term that I grew up with is, "You have to break a few eggs to make an omelet." Basically it means that for something good to happen that you often also have to endure some pain as well. Very often a truth of course.

My question was this. If you believe that the courts are to lenient, then you seem then to be advocating for them to be harsher so as allow less defense for the scum suckers. If you would choose to do so, in my opinion, you would then be advocating for more innocent people to go to jail so as to ensure that less guilty people would be set free. I was curious if one or more of the innocent people that had to be imprisoned would happen to be those that you held dear instead of a random, idealistic, faceless 'someone', would you then hold the same opinion of the justice system?

    Dwayne

Im going to take a crack at this and you know me it could be a bit long. Its not that I think their should be less defence not at all. I think that the punishment should suit the crime and in Canada it is really lop sided. When someone kills one intentionally and with malace they should go to jail for life and no parol. I am also a beliver of the death penalty(that will bring alot of flack)in which I think Clifford Olsen should have been subject to(so many problems on so many levels in his case). There are some crimes that are truely caused by mental illness for example http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/story/2009/03/05/mb-li-verdict.html. But the unfortunant issue in this case is that he can be let out of the mental institution as soon as a dr. deems him cured. He has already tried to be release but because of public out rage it didnt happen. I think they should still do a set sentance even if it is in an institution. This man (and I'm very sad to say I grew up calling him uncle Hal)http://www.canada.com/comoxvalleyecho/news/story.html?id=cfdf585e-9830-4745-b53b-f0b4a690accf should never have been let loose. When he was in jail going to trial I happen to be in Victoria and had to deal with the RCMP on the case I asked if I could go watch and was asked if I was abused. Since I was lucky, so lucky and was not abused by him, I was asked not to because if he recognized me he could call me in as a defense witness. So I didnt go. In the artical it states a calander of 1000 documented offences. He did these in the NWT while working as a teacher. Now as I said I called him Uncle Hal so Im going to use this to answer your question. As a child I held this man very dear. As families we did so much together, camping, dinners, ect. I would sit with him at his HAM radio and enjoy his company and loved to talk to so many people from other countries. He was never harmful to me or ever said anything inapproriate. As life went on my parents divorced and he also divorced his wife. When I was newly married and living in Inuvik NWT he had gotten in contact with me and we had a few meetings. At that time being older I had a feeling about him that was different than when I was young but it wasn't anything that would prepare me for what was about to happen. I then moved to where I am now. My ex-husbands mother started to send us clippings about him being arrested (he was my husbands principle and some other cub scout type of thing leader). When I first read them I was abit in disbelief as anyone would be. And deep down I hope that these things were untrue. But alas they were true and when they gave him 13 years for what he did I was discusted. This man should never have been set free EVER. Not long ago I was watching a news artical about an attempted kidnapping and the picture looked exactly like him. I went to my local RCMP and let them know that I though the pic looked like him and they should look into it. They did but I have no idea what has happened after that. He is also suspect in missing children from Colwood but they never could pin it on him. So what if he was innocent......I truely dont know how I would react to be honest, I would hope that our justice system would learn from the mistake and change the law that convicted him. So this is a case from the 1980's. Lets go to this day and age. The police agencies have the ability of forensics. They have a better understanding of the criminal mind and in gerneral have a better understanding of crimes. The innocent going to jail for these types of crimes are less and less because of forensics, what is happening is the old cases before forensics are being vindicated.

I utterly hate my justice system where I am. The Judge that comes here is a bleeding heart that accepts the racist card. Oh my son/daughter is being harassed because they are native. Our chief councelor will go and harrass the RCMP for doing their job. It is a vicious cycle and is a system that is more for the crimminal than it is for the victim.

So to the end. When I go to the court house and they sentence someone I accept the sentance as it is and I dont go on TV and start a head hunt on someone who is found innoccent. I don't think this is exactly what you wanted in an answer Dwyane but it is the only instance that I have close to speak of. If you want the Justice system to change then you have to lobby, but what ends up happening is that until something devistating happens to you, you dont advicate. Like my sister in law had nothing to do with Mothers against drunk drivers until her daugher was in an accident involving a drunk driver.
