  1. Those officers should be criminally charged as well. Yes, emotions were high. But that doesn't give them the right to do something like that. Yes, the guy might have done something heinous before the chase. Still doesn't give them the right. They are cops. Not judges, not juries, and not executioners. That could have made the difference between whether that guy survived that accident or not. Keep in mind that at some point in our careers in EMS we may(and, depending on were you live, likely will) come across a patient that we would rather not treat. One of my instructors had to treat a father that had killed his child and then attempted to kill himself. As much as a lot of us, myself included, think that man deserved to die, he was given the same exemplary care that any other patient would get. We don't get to decide otherwise and neither do the cops.
  2. Vehicle drivers, regardless of the vehicle, all have a responsibility to themselves and others to take appropriate steps to assure their safety and the safety of others on the road. I forgot to mention on my previous post that not only should we always look over our shoulders, but also never float next to another vehicle. This should probably go double for motorcycles and very small cars like Miatas. You're just very difficult to see at that point. Adjust your speed to put a gap between you, even it means you have to slow down for a few moments.
  3. Considering she's done it at least twice(that we know of) I have to wonder if she's one of those that think it's funny to "fake out" a cyclist. I used to go to school with a girl that bragged about doing that kind of thing. It just sounds a little ironic that twice she would just so happen to change lanes at the moment a motorcycle tries to pass. Did your dad report his run in with her? If so, they will hopefully see that and realize she didn't learn anything and could probably use some jail time. This time she managed to kill someone and seriously injure another. On a related note, I don't think the problem is just with motorcycles. I don't know how many times I've seen people just glance at their mirrors and change lanes. Even my jeep has been caught in blindspots and i've nearly been sideswiped. I think the problem is with people not taking the extra couple of seconds to look over their shoulder before changing lanes.
  4. I agree with you, docharris and fiznat, if Tristan is trying to learn 12. If you just want a basic understanding of 3 lead, get ECGs Made Easy by Barbara Aehlert. It gives you some foundation in a&p and electrophysiology, q&a and crossword puzzles reviews after each chapter, introduction to 12-lead without getting so in-depth it makes your head spin, a post-test, a cd, and a pocket guide. It helped me out alot.
  5. Yeah, I'd carry it on duty, but I'd carry a pack of dollar store pens to let others use. I'm a pen fanatic. Do you know, btw, if the nib or ink or anything can be customized? It's gotta write smooth, you know. And not bleed through, say, a pcr.
  6. I'm still learning but given what I know about seizures I'd be interested to know how long it's been since seizing stopped, how long it lasted, type, cause(epilepsy or some other?), and any treatments. We know that a prolonged seizure can cause hypoxia. We know that brain injury(the cause?)/hypoxia(the result) can cause ecg changes. We know that seizures can cause or be caused by electrolyte imbalances. I would have to wonder if some of these changes on the ecg may be temporary results of the seizure activity or indicate the cause of the seizure if this is not an epileptic patient. Can we get a SAMPLE and full set of vitals?
  7. Exactly. And what's so menacing about trying to get a reaction for a bathing suit? Have these people ever been to a beach!? The Oceanfront here is more like Sodom and Gamorrah in the summer. That's why the hotel housekeepers make an average of $15-17 and hour or $30-40 a room during the "in season". Good grief. Personally, I find him funny just for the shock value. People should just be glad he's only trying to get a reaction on his bathing suit.
  8. Heehee. Looks like my brother and his friends there.
  9. I fail to see what he was arrested for. Yeah, it's weird, even creepy. It makes people uncomfortable. But it said very clearly he never threatened anyone. Just showing of his suit. Which, btw, covered all of his stuff. I'm more worried about my kids seeing some woman with her nipples almost showing and her rear literally hanging out(or worse, in a thong). That makes me uncomfortable. Next time I see it, I'll be sure to have her arrested. Same with guys "sagging" their pants and newlyweds making out in public.
  10. That is cool! I'm going to have to talk my boyfriend into buying one for me!
  11. This happened here a few years ago. What do people expect to happen? A deck on a single family home is not built to hold 20 people! I always thought that was common sense, but either I'm wrong or common sense is a dying virture.
  12. I hadn't looked into the brother too much. Do we have an age on this guy? Is his brother a twin and if not can we get his age? Any family history of liver, gallbladder, pancreatic, etc problems? Any family history of sickle cell disease or the like? How about possible exposure to hepatitis or family history of autoimmune hepatitis? Family history of rheumatoid arthritis? I know these are long shots, but figure why not rule them out, too?
  13. Just a thought here. Have we ruled out malaria and lyme disease?
  14. This guy and his buddy should both be charged with voluntary manslaughter at the very least. I'd say murder, but from what I understand you'd have to prove premeditation. They both deserve life sentences. To kill 3 children and a mother, and from the sounds of it put how many more at risk, to steal a motorcycle? I'm sure a few of their fellow inmates will have something to say about it.
  15. Makes me even happier to own my 1993 Jeep. Seriously though, this is kinda scary. I never would have thought of any of it. Thanks for posting it.
  16. I don't know about your area, but here EMS, FD, and dispatch are all pretty much considered part of the same entity. Why? Because the EMS ambulances all run out of fire stations and dispatch receives calls for both. Some even go so far as to think that PD is also part of the same entity. Not as many though because they have their own buildings. Also, people around here are smart enough to know a dispatcher is no substitute for a medic, even in the ghettos. So, sorry if the people in your area feel that way. I guess I'm just lucky to be in an area where the public as a whole is only mildly retarded and don't think a voice on the phone can fix anything.
  17. Do the sorority sisters say anything about this "partying"? Was she drinking or using drugs? Her bp is kinda high, hr low, rr high. Since we don't appear to be getting much from "da hos" does she show any signs of trauma or chronic alcohol use? I say fudge the fluid bolus, run it kvo. The bp is already rising and too high. Also, is she still perfusing adequately? I'd get ready to pace(hr 50) and if she's not perfusing well get that started. Oh, and get her on the nrb @15. May bring that hr up a little. Maybe not, but worth a try. What's her skin turgor like, btw?
  18. Hey, at least it's good news for EMS instead of bad. I'll take it. It's getting a little old hearing about all the f*** ups.
  19. An article I read on here a few minutes ago made me curious. Does the area you live in offer assistance with car safety seat installation and, if so, how? Also, when the seat is installed are there any questions asked as to where the seat came from or instructions on how to use it properly offered? Here, every fire department offers help with assuring that safety seats are properly installed. I actually take mine to a fire station because my Jeep's seats are very "squishy" and at 100 pounds I'm no where near big enough to get it in tight enough. It actually takes 2-3 guys to do it(don't worry, I call ahead). They always ask if I myself purchased it and if it's ever been involved in an accident and if these answers are not satisfactory they tell you to buy a new one and outline why. However, not once have I ever been given tips for proper use. Most parents don't realize why it is vital to make sure that the chest buckle is between the shoulders or as close as possible. I hate seeing kids with that buckle across their abdomen. That's an ejection or severe internal injuries just waiting to happen. Please, if you do these installations make sure the parents are aware that the chest buckle should never be over a childs abdomen along with all the other safety precautions(forward vs backwards facing, shoulder straps in the right slots for childs height, etc.). If the parents don't have the manual for their seat this can usually be found on the manufacturers website.
  20. I hate to say it, because I would love to be able to use an ultrasound, but really how much good is it going to do? Even if you find an internal bleed, there really isn't going to be much you can do in the field. Even a surgeon wouldn't be able to because of the lack of a sterile environment. Like VentMedic said, however, it could help to determine the need for a specialized hospital. Here though if we expect an internal bleed due to MOI they would go to the nearest hospital equipped for that anyway even in the absence of immediate signs and symptoms. I understand that may be different in other areas as we are lucky enough to have a level one trauma center nearby and a level two center(that's damn near a level one, just barely doesn't qualify as they occasionally will be missing one or two specialists) in my city. I would suspect, then, that this technology would be a waste of money in an area like mine but a huge benefit(when properly used) in a more rural area. Or, for that matter, in a place like NYC were transport to a level one center could be complicated by heavier traffic to have to navigate.
  21. This article says that the 1 y/o and 12 y/o were thrown from the back of the van. That sounds to me like they were not properly fastened in. This is such a tragic situation. While the accident may or may not have been avoidable(although most are) those children could easily have had a better chance.
  22. Wish granted. Everyone has internal peace, but the world has ground to a halt because of the lack of motivation to do anything. I wish school was over already and had my 3.5 gpa still.
  23. I know I'm a little behind here but here goes. First off, if the officer is sued it's not going to come from his pocket but rather the taxpayers most likely. So I'd be careful about wanting the family or Paramedic White to sue, especially if you live in Oklahoma. Secondly, if the officer was able to radio them, why did he wait till they moved instead of just radioing when he first realized they weren't? Then he probably would have gotten an apologetic "Couldn't see you back there" and the ambulance would have moved. All of this was 100% avoidable right there. Also, seems to me just from the video I saw, that the officer's statements are total BS and they should be charged with perjury. Before anyone jumps on that let me outline why. For the sake of saving space I'll cut out the parts of the article that aren't relevent. The full article can be found on a previous page of this thread. "In his report, Trooper Daniel Martin, who is at the center of the confrontation, said he was heading west into Paden to aid the Okfuskee County Sheriff's Office on a stolen-vehicle call." Apparently wasn't that big a deal because three blocks later he was pulling out to harrass the ambulance. "Eventually, the ambulance pulled over, he said, and he contacted the paramedics over their EMS radio, telling them they should be more observant." Again, why not just radio in the first place? "Once on the scene of the stolen-car report in Paden, Martin said he saw the ambulance pass and observed Franks extend his left hand out the window with his middle finger raised. 'I took the gesture as a sign of defiance to (the) failure to yield earlier, and that they (ambulance) did not believe they had a responsibility to adhere to the rules of the road in regards to my emergency vehicle,' Martin said. Seeing that the stolen-car call was under control, Martin said, he chased the ambulance until it pulled over." Wow, in the time it took an ambulance to start moving again and travel three blocks he managed to arrive at his scene and determine he wasn't need and could go harrass an ambulance? Again, wasn't that important to begin with. Let's look at whoever dispatched the call requiring him to fly down the road L&(S?) and why they didn't cancel him when the situation was secured. "Fearing possible violence, Martin said he backed away from White and then went to his cruiser to radio Trooper Bryan Iker for help." It's all too obvious this guy wasn't afraid of anything. Seems he's the one that was violent. The trooper then walked back to the ambulance and tried to tell White he would be arrested once he arrived at the hospital, but the paramedic was not in the ambulance with the patient. Martin said he walked around to the passenger side of the ambulance where White was standing. White was angry, wanting to file charges against the trooper for assaulting a paramedic, he said. Another scuffle ensued, and Martin said White grabbed him around the neck, refusing to let go. This is all complete 100% total bullshit. This is referring to the scuffle that was caught on tape and posted on YouTube. When the troopers got to the side of the ambulance White was still in it, just getting out. I never saw White grab the officer around the neck, but I clearly saw the officer grab White around the neck. This right here completely destroys the credibility of Martin and he should be on administrative leave pending an investigation into this. And yes, the camera was not directly on him at this point but given that both hands appear to be down below neck level I just don't see how it's possible. "Iker's report backs up Martin's account of the second scuffle." Ditto for this one. As it was, Franks was ultimately given a written warning for failure to yield. White was not arrested at the hospital. Seems to me that, given the obvious aggression of someone willing to assault an officer, he would have definitely been deemed a danger to the public and arrested. Cops have how many weapons and this guy had none? Yeah, he'd have to be pretty messed up in the head to assault an officer. Especially when there are other cops there with more weapons! I don't doubt that Paramedic White could have handled himself better. He definitely lost his cool. But it didn't warrant the actions taken against him. I wouldn't be surprised if that's why no charges are being filed. It's already too easy for a cop to get away with whatever they want, but White arguing made it a lot easier. Whoever said they should have just radioed to county is absolutely right. After that, the ball would have been back in Martin's court.
  24. I noticed that leads aVR, aVL, and aVF have what appears to be an ectopy of somesort on the second beat but I don't see any signs of it on any of the other leads. Any help with figuring out what's going on there?
  25. We went in today for the blood draw and it is temporal arteritis they are looking for. Thank you so much for your input. She'll get the results on Friday and hopefully all goes well. Thanks again.
