  1. Sept 11 is about the only day I miss living in NY. There are so many memories from that day. My wife and I talk about it with our kids, even though 3/4 of them weren't born then. They know what it is although they are not old enough to appreciate the significance yet. Now that the museum is open I plan on bringing them to it to see the history. Being from NY, you either were related to someone or knew someone that was lost that day. We moved to MI a few months before the 5 year anniversary. My wife was listening to one of the local radio stations and heard one of the on air personalities say something like, "I don't understand why we make such a big deal about it. It was 5 years ago, it's time to get over it." My wife called the radio station and went off on the poor person that answered the phone.

Yes they are. I open the game at work and collect stuff between pts.

Does anyone play any online games? I've gotten into Forge of Empires and probably spend more time on it than I should.
  4. I'm sure there will be enough vollies that will help out that it won't be a problem.
  5. Condolences from the ERDoc family. It was always fun joking and talking with Ed in the forums. We've lost another big part of the city family.
  6. Such tests already exist and are in limited use in EMS but wide use by ERs. Abbott makes an i-stat point of care devices.
  7. I think the thing that is being lost in this whole discussion is that no one is saying that you can't display a confederate flag, although that is what many people are turning it into. The real issue is whether a government facility should be displaying the flag and personally I feel the answer is no. Imagine the outrage if some state capital started flying the Nazi flag or the ISIS flag. Personally, I'm not sure why anyone would want to fly it when it represent treason and sedition against the country.
  8. Getting back on topic here, while it is not evidence based there is plenty of anecdotal evidence of the success Narcan has had when used by non-medical people. http://www.patriotledger.com/article/20141008/NEWS/141006435 https://www.bjatraining.org/naloxone/what-are-some-success-stories-law-enforcement-overdose-reversal-programs http://www.courant.com/news/connecticut/hc-state-police-narcan-heroin-20150801-story.html Some of the info stated in the stories isn't accurate (Narcan has no down side) and there is no discussion of anyone developing side effects. Here is an article published in American Journal of Public Health http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2661437/
  9. I'm a few months away from 40 and my kids constantly call me old. They also like to point out the bald spot on the top of my head. No matter what they say, there is one thing they cannot take away from me. I grew up in the 80s and they didn't.
  10. I was calling Ruff old. I would never refer to a woman as old, it's more like the perfect vintage. I tried to steal his sense of humor but I could never find it to steal.
  11. Welcome back Rid. Some of us oldies are still around (I just realized I've been here for over 10 years this summer).
  12. So we have a drug that can save someone's life and is easy to administer. Why would we not allow non-medical people to use it? Tylenol is lethal but yet we let anyone buy it. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2661437/
  13. There are even places that are teaching friends and family to administer it. Again, which is worse, the side effects listed above or being dead? We can deal with the side effects but we still can't fix dead. I agree that it needs to be pre-filled syringes and IN administration.
  14. The cops were usually there 10-15 minutes before the ambulance.
  15. The county I am from in NY gave the cops narcan before they gave it to the EMTs.

I have noticed it feels like a big advertisement but at least there is a nice picture of the beach on the signin screen. It's a small consolation prize for the privacy invasion.
  17. The system I came from allows EMTs to use it. If we can teach families and junkies to use it, why can't we teach EMTs to use it? There is always the argument that every medicine has some bad side effects, but are there any side effects worse than being dead?

I have a relatively new laptop and haven't had any problem, just getting used to the changes.
  19. I haven't looked at much of the latest tPA literature because my hospital system and the government tell me what to do nowdays but I remember when studies were first coming out and thinking, "How many of these 'saves' are true saves and not just TIAs who got tPA and would have gotten better either way?"

    PE vs MI

DVT/PE after a hospitalization is not uncommon.
  21. If you are applying for a job, I would recommend brushing up on interviewing skills and spellchecking your resume. As for the skills part of your question, I would recommend joining the volley squad and explain to them that you are certified but haven't done pt care in a while. Get the experience at the volley and then apply for a paid position once you are comfortable with taking care of a pt by yourself. Going over the class notes and textbook from your EMT class would be a good idea also, if you still have them.
