BEorP Posted September 3, 2007 Share Posted September 3, 2007 I know this is somewhat random (and hope it hasn't been previously discussed) but I am wondering what the best state is in the U.S. for a whacker. Specifically some of the criteria I was thinking of are: - full of low quality EMT-B programs that would never consider going above the 120 hours or whatever the absolute minimum is - not many paid positions, but lots of places to volunteer - along with volunteering, lenient regulations on emergency lights on personal vehicles - a wide variety of T-shirt suppliers for various shirts that tell the world how you save lives Plus any other criteria that you can come up with. Scaramedic Posted September 3, 2007 Share Posted September 3, 2007 New Jersey EMT Training Fund Eligible Agencies The New Jersey EMT Training Fund (EMTTF) reimburses agencies that provide EMT-B training (initial and/or continuing education) to members of volunteer EMS agencies. Eligible EMS agencies are defined by N.J.S.A. 27:5F-20 as “an ambulance, first aid or rescue squad that provides emergency medical services without receiving payment for those services.” Whether the individual members of a squad provide their services for free or are compensated by the squad is irrelevant to a squad’s volunteer status (8:40A-1.3). The following agencies have been deemed eligible to utilize the EMTTF. If your agency is not listed and meets the requirements listed above, or if your agency is listed and has since changed their volunteer status (fee charged for services rendered), please have the training officer of your agency contact the OEMS training/certification section at (609) 633-7777. Dustdevil Posted September 3, 2007 Share Posted September 3, 2007 LMAO! This topic is beauty! You have a pretty good point though. Whackerism varies greatly from location to location. There are places where whackerism is extreme -- where full lightbars and magnetic vehicle signs are the norm -- yet they would still call somebody with a badge or a Bat Belt a whacker. Consequently, "whacker" becomes a relative term. Personally, I have a low whacker threshold. I call anybody who uses the Star Of Life for any reason, other than to wipe their arse with, a whacker. Texas is relatively whacker-friendly, with laws, regulations, and low training requirements, and an excess of EMT schools that facilitate whackerism. However, I wouldn't say that Texas really encourages whackerism. Volunteerism (which is frequently synonymous with whackerism) is not rampant, and does not commonly exist in urban or suburban areas, save for a few exceptions. Volunteers aren't bestowed with that "uber citizen" status in Texas that they enjoy in the northeast. Most regular people view them with more of a stigma than with admiration. And there are many more paid jobs in Texas than volunteer positions. You'd definitely have to go farther north, and a lot farther east, to find Whacker Mecca. Most have one. Just go to www.indianafiretrucks.com and look at the wealth of VFD's. Indiana EMT test is a breeze. I would rate it a 7.5/10 on the whacker scale. Not that there aren't alot of good, quality Paramedics & Intermediates in VA, but there IS an overabundance of "whackerism" as well. Where did that term come from anyway? I prefer "wanker" myself. Maybe we can come up with the top 10 whacker criteria where each state receives a score from 0-1 in each category for a total score out of 10. Dp you wear a badge/shield with your regular duty uniform? Do you have a flashing LED or strobe warning light for your personally owned vehicle? How old are you?
