Can a butter knife cut? What are you cutting?

Excellent analogy ...

FiO2?

Sorry, I'll apolgize now if I offend, but are you actually in Paramedic school? If you are, then I would seriously be worried that you aren't familiar with that shortform. I'm just really surprised at the differences between Canada and the USA.

Unfortunately, you are correct. It is not something that is typically taught in US paramedic school. In fact, pulmonology is seriously glossed over for the most part. Most come out with a pretty weak understanding of ABGs, at best. And their understanding of oxygen therapy is geared more towards recognising an oxygen bottle than towards actually recognising their patient's needs. Very sad. But the better students recognise this and compensate through independent study.

I'm an eeeevil paramedic. I know the required rates for an an NRB, and a nasal cannula, and a BVM. But, I confess, my deepest darkest secret... I go by how my patient is presenting, his vitals, mental status, skin condition, and a whole host of other factos to determine the rate o flow of oxygen. SHHHHHH!!!! Don't tell anyone! Don't tell them I believe 10lpm is actually a pretty high setting for anyone who is not severely hypoxic! Do not let them know I have had great results in using an NRB at 6lpm, even 8lpm! I'll be tarred and feathered, I tell you.

Just remember everyone, the ammount of oxygen you give your patients is directly proportional to how soon you are gonna have to change than damn M cylender.
Yup...I've seen a medic withold oxygen for that reason...finally b/c he couldn't get an IV in before reaching hospital he gave him some O2...and within seconds of administering, hey what do ya know...the guy's LOC went from orientated x0 to x4...amazing!

I guess you could say it could technically improve their LOC so they could give you an SAMPLE that might save a life? (I'm reaching here)
