Canadian Election Results

The Conservatives win a majority. Layton's NDP somehow steps up to become the new official opposition. For the first time in Canadian history Liberals fall to a third place finish. The seperatist Bloc Quebecois lose the lions share of their seats, being reduced to only 4 in the house of commons. Even the fledgling Green party manages a win for their party leader Elizabeth May.

For an election that, at the outset seemed predictable, dull, and unessasary, it proved to be anything but. It, in fact turned out to be quite a historic outing for federal politic in our country. Not only that, with a stable majority government we shouldn't be subjected to another election for the next four years. Woot.

Yup ... a good day in Canada .

Sad part is that only 61% of the population bother to vote.

So what say the Canadians about this election? What changes do you folks want to see in your nation? What changes have the conservatives promised to make that earned them a victory?

I have to admit I am ignorant about much of the politics going on north of the US- other than the issues with your health care system. I am curious to hear what you folks think.

I'm not certain that it had as much to do with the Conservatives making promises, but more that the Liberals and Bloc were trying to hard to get the Conservatives out of power. I think Canadians were so tired of having an election every couple of years, and having a minority government that couldn't make any big changes because the other parties would always interfere. I suspect many voted Conservative, hoping for a majority government so we wouldn't have to deal with election threats again in the near future.

Personally, I am glad that the Bloc is down to 4 seats. I feel that they should have never been allowed to have a federal party, as the entire basis of their party is treasonous. Their entire goal is separation from Canada, but with an attempt to retain Canadian infrastructure - a parasitic approach. We have coddled the "Quebec Nation" far too long.

While I am leery of the new Conservative majority, I am am glad that we seem to have returned to a two-party system with majority parliaments.

I believe that most can not believe an actual honest polition exists, personally I am a huge fan of Harper, that said a bit too big of a majority .. but Canadians were fed up with "coalitionist" crap.

He managed to keep Canada in economic recovery WITH IGGY and JACK and the BLOCHEADS plotting a "legal coupe" ... meh.

Harper said he would lower GST and he did, now can move ahead with a long term plan, chip away and carefully make thing better for pensioners +++ .. maybe use some immigration dollars instead ?

The big ticket items/ policy .. don't know about the F-35 details .. but I do know we need to protect out airspace and 12 operational Super Hornets (and six overseas right now) I think the super cruise sans after burners as the selling feature.

Just me but I believe Canadian's FINALLY realised that IGGY should go back to school, and the BLOCHEADS were affecting our entire economy negatively .. just say separatist and investors run away (as if young Kubekers don't get they can't separate without becoming "Les Misérables" !

NDP humm ... balance is good but unproven as of yet and socialism is not a BAD thing but tax corporations is economics 101 ... we the people would end up paying.

My biggest hope is that Harper will put some teeth in real crime legislation, AND hold provinces "accountable under Can Health Act"

Finally get rid of the waste of 4 billion registering hunters long guns when a gang banger in down town EDM shoots another Somali kid that was waiting for his own murder trial to start ...

cheers

Oh yeah yeah for Liz May .. I like that chicky !

When the government holds 167 seats, the opposition 102 and the next party 34 and then 4 and 1 respectively after that, we effectively have a two party parliament. What remains to be seen is whether this becomes the new status quo or whether we return to a situation where the Liberals and or the Bloc are able to have strong electoral showings. We will see in 4-5 years.

I actually think that it is wonderfully Canadian that the Bloc is a federal party and at one point formed "Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition." In other countries, wars are fought and people die for the cause of regional separation, but in Canada, we voted about it. Edited by cprted

Only thing .... I and agreed in principle with your statements, I have to add is this:

If the MP's would vote for bills and policy "sans party line" but for their constitutes opinions .. we would be in a way better place.

cheers
