Tipping...to take it or not?

Isn't there something about if you accept any payment of whatever size, the transaction becomes fee-for-your-service, which makes you personally liable should the patient (and, say, the patient's lawyer) later come to believe something went wrong? Or maybe that's true only for volly crews, who are told to decline gifts but say donations to the corps are welcome.

you bring up a interesting point. Anyone want to address that?

Wouldn't getting a tip be considered some sort of payment for your services and be a bad thing?

They'd have to prove it in court.

I don't issue receipts for tips.

I was taught never to accept tips because THAT IS some form of payment and we are a volunteer squad we do this out of the goodness of our hearts and the feeling we get from helping that person is what counts it is not any amount of money that counts

What a pants load.

And they tip out of the goodness of their hearts too. Why is your "good feeling" so much more important than theirs?

That warm squishy feeling doesn't pay my student loans.

Edit:

To be clear, I don't expect a tip for doing my job [personally, I'm against the entire "tip waiters 15-20% for doing their job correctly because they suck at negotiation also]. I don't entirely look a gift horse in the mouth either though.

I tried telling the electric company once that I volunteered, and it placed a real good feeing in my heart. Then I asked them to forget the months bill and replace it with the same feeling in their heart. She laughed and I thought it was just the feeling coming in to her heart feeling so good and I hung up.

That was a cold night....

I NEVER accept tips for my services. Whether it be at my job working for BCAS or during my off time working in SAR, tips will never be accepted. Accepting tips in those situations is unprofessional period. If someone wishes to give money they are directed to a worthy charity such as the "Heart and Stroke Foundation".
