  1. Yes, associates of paramedicine degree. It's who I had spoken to. They require an EMT, but no experience
  2. It is fun isn't it? I am all finished with the medical part of the class. All we have left is a module on cleanind up the ambulance and sterilization etc. Then practical practice. In two weeks the fire Dept brings out a few cars for us to practice rapid extraction. Woot! Enjoy!
  3. I have enjoyed the EMT program I am in. We have has physicians for some lectures, ob nurses for the OB and neonatal section and module etc. And for legal and ethics we had the county attourny who used to specialize in medical malpractice. He loves to give lectures and is good at it. He was adamant about telling us it is close to impossible to be emancipated in the state of Iowa and unless papers are in hand, we contact legal guardians. He was very interesting to listen to.
  4. yes, even if obviously pregnant. Case being that unfortunately there are 11 and 12 year olds who get pregnant etc, this doesn't make them any more capable of making informed decisions.
  5. Of course im sure the tears would start flowing. Bringing up his family may not always be a good idea of it is what brought it on, but you could make him feel like you care. Someone cares about him. make sure he knows you are human too, with kids, family etc. Than I pee myself and start begging.
  6. I have been told it would be good for me to run as an emt for a while and get my feet wet, and I have also been told it would be good for be to go straight to medic school before developing habits of an EMT. Some instructors like a clean slate, others like some field experience. I know a lot of time in bigger cities, people go right into PARAMEDIC school without ever seeing an ambulance. .. do what you think is right for you.
  7. Well, I just got the feeling they didn't like having students there. Either way, I chose not to finish my clinical work that day so I could return to the first site. Ill finish out there with ease and extra contacts. We only need 15 patient contacts and I have 13. I easily could have gotten them all in one day at the second place. However I had seven to start with. I can easily get 8 to 10 more going back at the first place. Truthfully, I want to go back. I loved it there. Louse riding with an all ALS team is just fascinating.
  8. We had an attourny in our class for legal and ethics. What we learned is unless there is a court document, the teenager is not considered emancipated. We can treat life-threatening illnesses under implied consent only but need a legal guardian for anything else.
  9. not completely out of the question, but quite a drive, at least a good 90 minutes a day. Small towns galore, depending on volunteers to provide ems services. I guess we shall see what the future holds I love the squad I am on and love the wide range of calls we get. From trauma to transfer. I look forward to the A&P, just for curiosity
  10. I really, desperately wanted to go on to paramedic, but so far, the grant money isn't there. That isn't to say it won't happen, we will have to approach the city. Paying my own way on a volunteer squad... well you see what I am saying. However, the AEMT is within the continuing education allocated expense, but the director would rather have another medic. We shall see. I'm told I am medic material and someone they would like to see go further so it is up to our grant writer and director to make it happen.
  11. the thought is, I have my own awesome one, but our ambulance is equipped with one we clean with swabs. It's disinfected each use. Ears and all. I don't loan mine out though in fear of not getting it back
  12. Well, before going I asked what should I bring, they said just myself, they had everything I need there. I had no access to a stethoscope so that was out. I would follow the nurse in as the patient came in so taking a history would pretty much be a repeat performance. I say trauma center, because it was, but it is also a functioning ER so a majority of patients were flu, colds etc. It was just. Eh
  13. the trauma center told me to go wherever I wanted and I could talk to patients. However I didn't have the direction I did at the other hospital. I don't know. Speaking to the my instructor , he had the same problem there during his clinicals and found a much better experience elsewhere. Some places just seem to be better teaching hospitals.
  14. Well, at the first hospital, I did blood pressures, I did 12 leads, I did assessments. I helped the doctor set a broken tib/fib I did a lot of hands on. I had a lot explained to me. It was a great experience. The second hospital, I could have said I did brain surgery on my paperwork and they would have signed it. I posed the BP machine a couple times just to say I did something... it just wasn't like the first place. don't get me wrong, I wasn't turned loose in the first place, but they let me do everything withing my scope of practice.
  15. I fell in love with the A&P part of the class and had questions that just couldn't be answered at the EMT level class.
  16. well next day I went to a trauma center. in 12 hours they had a good 200 patients. I hated it there. Yes, I could have been done, they would have signed a blank check had I handed it to them, but I took a couple tramas, watched from a corner, marked what I did (observed) had them sign and then I took the patients I enjoyed, and spent the day caring for them. I need 2 more. I cancelled the next day with the trauma center due to weather , well it was supposed to snow and I called the first place back. He stated they loved having me there and doors were open for me. If I get my medic, I have a job waiting I will plan to go back next weekend. I wanted to actually care for my patients, not watch and get stupid papers signed. I could have been done ten times over, but I wanted to do it right.
  17. My book its like... at the end. Last module. Im ready to be done, but im going to kind of miss it. Well review and mod testing in a week, then review, blah blah blah, NR skills test next month. Then I do my NR test. I am ready, no worried about it. But it has been a big part of my life for nine months. Im getting college credits for this, and I got part time student status. Yay tax break. Maybe im addicted, but after some of the things we learned, I had questions. I want to know why. We did a lot of physiology in this class to make it a college course, but I still want more answers. So I decided to take A&P.
  18. 4! The answer is 4! The rest of what you said makes no sense to me yanno, emt level however I know how to take a blood sugar and I see dex50 pushed all the time
  19. I am an ambulance driver running as a third and other times I run as a fourth (student) does volunteering help? Um, no. Truth be told, you will see other EMTs bad habits, their way of doing things that may or may not follow the way you are being taught etc. However, the experience can be nice and make you more comfortable. As for class, I am on my last 2 chapters. Its been fun. Find what works for you. I read, then re-read and highlight, then note what I highlighted. I have ADD and need to write it down. all or our test are from the NR test bank. Be prepared, they are a little trickier than straightforward questions, you can find samples online.. Clinicals, I chose two hospitals, one had an ALS squad and I worked the ER until a call and the other was a trauma center. I didn't like the trauma center. I stood in a corner and watched. They were too busy for students and made it clear. Easily had 200 patients in 12 hours.. I elected not to have them completely sign me off, which they would have signed anything and go back to the other hospital where I did all the assessments, all the 12 leads. All the discharge vitals and had the ambulance on standby. A bit of both. I I will miss my class. Its been a lot of fun. I hope to start medic next year, but we will see about funding. In the mean time, im getting the book and pr-reading and taking notes on it during the year to help.
  20. There, They're, Their... it's going to be ok
  21. I kept threatening the "Q" word just to get some of my patient contacts. Until today, I have been unable to even touch a patient. Well, I got 7 of 15 contacts. 3 trauma, 4 medical. My preceptors were fantastic. Only one ambulance call. Diabetic, blood glucose 28. Of course only thing I could do was apply O2 via nasal cannula as they started an IV and drew blood to get an accurate reading (glucose on fingers from well meaning family) so I gave him O2 at 2 lpm . It is different running with a full ALS crew as opposed to a BLScrew with medics avaliable.. I took vitals on every who entered, even on patients who weren't mine. I actually did an EKG AND and ECG? white right, brown in the middle, smoke over fire and green under white. I assessed a broken leg a back injury mastitis the doctor showed me all the results for tests and x rays. Explaining this and that. I assisted the doctor in splinting the leg until casting tomorrow. The whole time I was singing the Ands and counting since he was 3. It was a great experience and the Ambulance director asked me back said I as great
  22. Slow day, only 3 medical, 1 trauma... halfway through shift so far. They said it is a slow day. Waiting for the floor to drop out. Sigh
  23. Well, being as I work in the educational support field, I am off for 10 days! I am scheduled tomorrow morning to ride with an ALS unit for 12 hours and work in their ER on their down time. This will be my first clinical experience. I then got called back by another hospital to do clinicals the next morning in their ER/Trauma center and again Tuesday! I am going to be a busy busy girl. I need 15 patient contacts. 10 medical, 5 trauma. The place I will be tomorrow had been known to fill it all in one day?!? However, even if that was to happen, I would still love the Trauma center. They have a reputation for taking students in helicopters! Anyway, wish me luck, I should be sleeping, long drive means a 3 am wake up call for me. To get me some sleep I chose to get a hotel tomorrow night, but have a big test in between. Nervous, excited and scared!!! This first place likes to make good students incident commanders.
  24. hey, all I know is when you joined you were a student too. No judgement. None needed. I understood the whole time, it was spitting (typing) the words out that got me. I think everyone gets that page to the same address and just wants to drag their feet and assume it is the same old thing. My point was, it isn't always the same old thing. You also are pretty new to EMT so the grasshopper comment was a bit uncalled for . I've been in an ambulance for longer than my student status, I just can't be a driver forever.
