  1. you are thinking of divorce, abandonment, and etc Dating outside is different ! you aren't leaving your wife, you are simply having fun ! that's perfectly fine. Heck, one of my favorite lines is " hello, my wife and I are wondering if you would join us for a drink" . hehehehe
  2. Hi guys, I hope your day is going well. I am considering buying an AED to keep around in my first aid kit for emergencies. Though the chances of actually needing it is pretty low, I like to be prepared. I am thinking about The Philips HeartStart OnSite... here is a link to the brochure. http://incenter.medical.philips.com/doclib/enc/578464/OnSite_Brochure.pdf%3ffunc%3ddoc.Fetch%26nodeid%3d578464%26vernum%3d6 I am in NYC, NY. I have looked up some laws and so far, most of what laws I can find is trying to make businesses and other entities have AEDs available. I haven't found any restrictive laws yet. I have found out that my state even offers a income tax credit if you buy an AED ! see form here : http://www.tax.ny.gov/pdf/current_forms/it/it250_fill_in.pdf Any New Yorkers ( or knowledgeable folk ) have any input ? Thank you.
  3. I can only speak about local blankets... they are rare ! the ER usually keep some with the sheets but they are very popular I guess... so what I do, is just use several sheets, and be sure the bus's heater is on at the start of the tour so the mod is nice and warm all day long.
  4. Sure it can be selective... think of the womanizer that never cheated a business partner out of a penny, he has integrity when it comes to business, no integrity when it comes to his marriage. "On the tank thing.. either go to a company that actually fills D tanks like Resinger or go to a welding supply company that fills oxygen cylinders and hope that the O2 is filtered and clean. Either way Im pretty sure you will do whatever is cheaper." I really will do whatever is cheaper... .. . As long as it don't matter ! the question is, will it matter ? The place my agency goes to fills everything in the same location, medical gas, welding gas, industrial gas, scientific gas, yada yada yada... I don't know if they will bother dealing with one guy with one bottle. Their operation is huge, hundreds of pallets of bottles of all types and sizes.... but if it does matter then I would pay for the medical gas. and Thank you for your suggestion about Reisinger oxygen, and also thanks to all who had offered suggestions if I haven't already said thanks.. thanks !
  5. Ok.. so here is an example: http://www.aedbrands.com/defibrillator/first-aid-oxygen/aed-companion-emergency-oxygen.html you can buy it filled, no prescription. I just don't like their price when eBay's brand new D tank is $50 bucks shipped... I'm selective. I have integrity for things that warrant integrity... and I'll cheat if I want to, for things that "just do not matter". If you make a list of things that people shouldn't cheat about, you will find that I will agree with that same list. but lets be frank, were human, I'll cheat if it really "don't matter"... but that's me, im not saying everyone can be selective. "Your example of cheating on a Spanish test or class.. what happens when someone who knows you took the class asks you to help translate a spanish speaking patient thats in distress? Yea guess that was insignificant." Don't be silly, you can always make up examples out of thin air for anything you can think of... just as easily as I can make up rebuttals, but im not going to because its a waste of bandwidth.
  6. "Check your local protocols... everywhere I have worked as an EMT-B, Paramedic, and now RN, it requires a prescription or protocol" that's just the thing, it isn't about EMT B P or RN.. there shouldn't be a protocol because its just First Aid.
  7. Good sam ? I wish ! shes way hot ! ( ugh, there goes that cheating again ) Its really for "whatever", emergency preparedness , first aid kit. Im even considering having my own AED. but damn $$$$ oh THAT ! LOL, yeah, cheating is fine when what you are cheating about is insignificant...
  8. You lost me on this one.. I cant remember what you are referring to about the cheating, I do believe that spouses should be able to date outside marriage but you cant be a part of that forum too??? but anyway, it is my personal D tank, If it isn't possible to do it on my own, I wouldn't want it. however I do think it is possible to do it on my own. I checked, I don't see any linwelds... My Agency has a service that refills for us, again, If it isn't OK for a trained first aid person to have his own tank then I wouldn't want to try to circumvent any existing rules by getting one from the agency... I don't think I would use it at all, but hey, its pretty cheap, and if the occasion arises it can really help a patient. according to my research, O2 is avail without prescription for first aid uses (emergencies) 6 LPM or greater, 15 minutes or more... http://www.redcross.org/images/MEDIA...ctandSkill.pdf I'm back sir, yes. according to my research, O2 is avail without prescription for first aid uses (emergencies) 6 LPM or greater, 15 minutes or more... http://www.redcross.org/images/MEDIA...ctandSkill.pdf , I would just leave it the oxygen bag, no signs, its just a D tank, not huge or heavy, EMS is never seconds away, I think its a good idea because its cheap, and I like the idea of having it if the need arises... I live in an apartment building, we are all friendly here and most already know that Im an EMT, and I do tell them that if they ever need help, they can always try my door if they want to.. I might not be home but its worth a try, hey you never know, and as for family, sure why not ? you can decide who you want to help. Some people hate their family. HA ! no one outside EMS would know what that sign means ! the liability should be covered by the good sam, since its just for first aid use.
  9. Hi Guys, Ebay has brand new empty CGA 870 D tanks for around 50 bucks shipped. I am going to buy one for my home emergency kit. ( you never know, love thy neighbor and etc ) I have an EMT-B cert. I have never filled a tank before. Where in or near New York City can I have a personal D tank filled? and how much can I expect to pay ?
  10. There seems to be some miscommunication. I am merely saying, that LESS EMOTIONAL is better for "EMERGENCY WORK". Emergency work demands a person be CALM and CONFIDENT in situations that would make MOST NORMAL PEOPLE break down in tears and cry uncontrollably. [Note by Dwayne: Liked by me not because I necessarily agree with everything said but for the attempt to stay in the conversation and make their point more clear and less offensive. Like the opinion or not, I respect the willingness to stay engage and debate.]
  11. I don't wear gloves to a call. I have tons of gloves in pockets and bags. I don them if I think it is needed after I get to the scene. I follow BSI precautions. but if there is no "BS", then I don't need to "I" what is not there. see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_substance_isolation I also consider using gloves when I get the nasty patients... i.e. the drunks, the unwashed homeless...
  12. Yes ! I do teach the shoulder roll as part of the KED lab.
  13. Here is some advice: EMT course is very compressed, a lot of stuff to learn in very little time. I find that most students fail because they have not budgeted time for the course. for every hour you spend in the class, budget 2 hours for studying and practical skills practice. My class here was 110 hours. including all the work outside, it became more like 300 hours. another thing... do not cheat. Cheating is ok if no one gets hurt, such as when you took Spanish 101 and had that little translation app open the whole time. but in EMS, cheating hurts, patients will die and it will be your fault ! so keep it honest, when taking multiple choice exams, be aware of the questions you are not sure about, and review them thoroughly afterwards.
  14. You are not alone, My instructor had broken BOTH femurs. It took forever. but she is now back to work. you can do it too "have patients." ( spelling pun )
  15. I have no experience with a state that does not have their own state exam, but uses the NREMT exam as their state recognized licensing exam. but I am not challenging that because it sounds perfectly realistic. I live in a state that has a state exam, and NREMT is not recognized as the licensing exam, and it does nothing for a person here trying to be certified/licensed for the first time ever. You are right, he did not specifically state where he lived. I am very good at feeling things out, I got that he lived in a state that has its own state test because of what he said. You may re-read his post to see the clues. I looked at his previous posts, and indeed I was right ! I WAS RIGHT ! the OP lives in NC. NC is a state that has its own state exam, it is 100 questions, and they DO NOT TAKE the NREMT exam to certify a first time EMT. So again my statement is TRUE. It is worthless if he does not plan to move, and actually moves to or works in, a state that takes NREMT for reciprocity. for HIM, it is worth NOTHING ! for ME it is worth NOTHING ! any questions, please feel free to call NC's EMS at 919 855 3956 and ask for ALESIA HESTER.
  16. correction: FDNY is only one of the many EMS agencies here in NYC. in NYC there are only two levels of prehospital care. the EMT-B and the PARAMEDIC. anything under paramedic is working at the basic level. ERDOC has his opinions on how a person should appreciate or feel or care etc etc.. that's fine, I don't mind the right to free speech. "not wanting to see people die" means you are emotional, not necessarily good, certainly do not mean you are competent. Competent is competent, Cowboy? there are no cowboys in NYC thus I don't understand what you mean. EMTs are not doctors, Paramedics are not doctors. Our goal here is to get the patient to the doctor in no worse condition than we found them. Please do tell me, what special things you are going to do for this patient that I was not going to do ? it is BLS, there isn't a lot to do ! we all have the same national standards, so please do tell me what it is that isn't already in the protocols that you want to see be done for this patient ? ( dont answer that, its for you to think about) Not scared, because that's not my job, but the medic will come put in a tube. not scary, no nightmares. if the tube wont go in down the throat, then the medic can do the cricothyrotomy. I guess when you know what you are doing and trust your fellow EMS to do their jobs well, there is no place for scary panicky nightmares. Im done with this topic, be safe out there people !
  17. so please tell me, what special things you are going to do? I know what to do, and all of it is the same standard stuff I would do for anyone else. It's BLS, its not a lot there is to do.
  18. I don't know why you are all so scared. I'm not scared. I am prepared to do my job... which is..... get him to the hospital so he can get the life saving treatment ? I have been to plenty of these calls just like this, (minus the metal part). its very standard. Air and chair, Air and chair... but as I said, ALS would do more.
  19. "57 yo, male, in sitting position c/o coughing and spitting up copious amounts of thick yellow secretions. Pt is looking gray. mother states he had surgery a month ago. coughed up blood and a piece of metal two days ago. Pt appears weak." well Im not saying he's healthy. but this isn't really so bad..... because.... He's sitting, that's good. he's coughing, that's good, looks grey, (but sitting) not so bad, the surgery was a month ago, not bad, the coughing up of a piece of metal was 2 days ago ( if it even really happened at all, senior citizen's story is not always reliable ), that's not bad... what the pt really needs is a doctor. so if he survived the last 48 hours after the metal cough, he can do 10 more minutes on the way to the hospital.
  20. Sure I work ems. yes I might call ahead. ( meaning emergency room notification ) it may sound strange to you, but I'm in NYC. Calling ahead is really a courtesy and is not mandatory. the ER is always operational and not very far away. Teams are always at the ready for more easily identifiable and serious things to call ahead for like CVAs and etc. This patient don't sound very dire to me. "57 yo, male, in sitting position c/o coughing and spitting up copious amounts of thick yellow secretions. Pt is looking gray. mother states he had surgery a month ago. coughed up blood and a piece of metal two days ago. Pt appears weak." So I will take him to the hospital. because he is gray (read pale) he may be in shock, the yellow indicates some kind of infection. there is nothing I can do ( we are BLS) for him. So Its Air and Chair. I would do the standard stuff I would do for everyone else of course, the assessments and the questions.... fill out the PCR... I would definitely ask the mother for the piece of metal. I can imagine if ALS was present, they would use the pulse ox to see the SPO2, start an IV and administer fluids, if his breathing is so bad, may use CPAP. do a bigger assessment, ask more questions and then it would be transport to the hospital, and they will decide if they need to call ahead, depending on how bad the pt is.
  21. Yes, Yes, Psychopaths ! like Dexter of the TV show... Dexter. but they are still assets. because if you don't spend a half hour crying after a call, you can be out on the next call. definitely an asset in my books. nothing wrong with people who do not get emotional after a call. in the world, humans come in all different levels of emotional. you got the girls that cry and get upset over the every littlest thing, and you got the serial killer that wont blink an eye as they press the genocide button. EMS and other emergency type jobs like police, military, are better suited for those who are LESS EMOTIONAL and they are assets here. Jobs like consular, therapists, etc are better suited for those who have a higer level of emotional availability, and they are assets there. I myself, am more towards the less emotional type, very little bothers me, never cried or needed to after a call, people dying after hours of CPR do not get me upset, I focus on the work, to provide the best quality care I can, and after that, I know that everybody eventually dies, its the way of nature. I'm ok with that.
  22. I'm sorry, but I tried searching for posts on this subject, I didn't happen to find any. I used keywords "FDNY transport dead" and similar other searches... If you would be so kind, could you please show me the link to a couple of those threads ? Im sure it would be good reading. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Richard B: thanks for the story.
  23. well that's fine. If the state test is indeed the NREMT test, and you need it to be licensed, then you have no other choice anyway. I am saying its worthless to people who work in states that does not use NREMT for the state test. therefore NREMT is worthless to them unless they move. like, is that not true ? I cant speak for those who live in states that uses NREMT as their state test. I live in NY, we have a NYS DOH test, but NREMT is available to be taken here by those who want to go off to a private company and take it, but that has nothing to do with the state. However I have looked into some states further out from me for reciprocity, and they do want your NREMT to be current to offer you their state license. you didn't read my post correctly scubanurse. I said, that "every state has a test that it will recognize" that means that there is one test the state will make you take to become certified. it can be a home state test, it could be a NREMT test. if it is the NREMT test they recognize, then there is no discussion at all, it is mandatory or you don't be certified and licensed. but the original poster of this thread was asking about paying 90 dollars to go take the NREMT test. to me, that sounded like he lives in a state that has their own state test, and is now considering the NREMT test. of such, I stand my ground, and my statement still rings true. "NREMT is worthless unless you plan to move or work in another state" and to top it off, that state has to be one that accepts NREMT too, if it don't, he wasted his $90 real good.
  24. oh well, I'd take him to the closest hospital immediately. I might call ahead because of the shock.
