  1. My def of amb ass is:

When your assigned to the worst car in the fleet with vinyl seats on a hot humid day hungover from the night before of cheap chili, wings and schaffer beer.

Its that sweaty feeling you get and wonder if that was a fart or did you just shart.

    lolol

I guess there is NO hope at dignity at all working on an ambulance with someone ALL THE TIME huh. There will be farting... *sighconfused.gif lol

  2. If you have even the slightest inclination to use food to relieve stress, boredom.........

I had to take a good hard look at myself and discover that I do infact eat mostly out of boredom and as an emotional crutch. Re-wiring my brain, and attempting to replace good habbits with bad is proving to be harder then I thought. Its one of those things that seems so 'simple', and you start out well. Only to notice that you crept right back into all the bad as before. Baby steps. And thats why I gave myself so much time, that way I dont set myself up to fail in a short amount of time.

I guess it all comes down to the individual. You have already established a goal to lose weight and I applaud you for it! Don't waste that when you get a job by becoming "Ambulance Ass" cool.gif

Im getting a Wii in a few weeks. Complete with all the Wii fitness packs. Im so stoked. I joined a gym, but, ughh its just not me. And I get these weird energy ball moments, but, due to the kids, I cant just take off. Its a good start anyhow. I know I will have to get to a point where I need to go back into the gym to work with someone. However, untill then, I can work out in my jammies, or really, just at anytime!!

  3. I heard this term the other day, and about died laughing. But the guy telling me was saying its real. He told me that you can really gain alot of weight working on an ambulance. Okay, how? The main reason why I am waiting so long to take my EMT class is because I have a personal goal / promise to myself that I will not even pay for a class untill I have lost X amount of weight. I could do the job now as is, but, I would rather better myself and be as healthy as possible. I'll never be tiny, but, I can work on core strength, and cardio so that I can be a better me. But I dont want to blow back up after I get hired..lol

  4. Cant imagine why he would want a radar gun?? I have a blow dryer with a huge attachment that makes it look just like a radar gun. If he wanted to mess with people he could have used it, and had fuller, thicker hair too icecream.gif .

*edited to add, I tend to tell lame jokes early in the morning..lol

  5. Agreed on the chemistry recommendation. The first week or so of A&P is the goddamn Krebs Cycle, and other molecular processes that will leave you scratching your head if you don't understand basic chemical structure.

Here is the info on the JR. College class:

  6. A full on college level A/P course (or separate anatomy and physiology courses depending on how it's organized) would be better, however anything is better than nothing. It's also much better to take foundation courses (like anatomy and physiology) before you take the more applied courses (like EMT-cool.gif. Similarly, if you take a full on A/P sequence, it isn't like the information expires because you took it before EMT-B and not between EMT-B and EMT-P courses.

I am looking into the local Jr. College class that offers BioScience entry level, 3 units, January through May. Iv'e got the time, so why not..lol YAY!! Now I just need to find an A&P for Dummies book..lol

Now I just need to find an A&P for Dummies book..lol

OMG they make one! Ha, I was just kiddingthumbsup.gif

  7. I have seen on here in a few posts how important A & P classes are for Paramedic classes. I have lots of time on my hands between now, and when I start my EMT-B classes. The local adult ed offers an 8 week basic A & P class for $89.00 (text book $60). Would that be something smart to take prior to EMT / will it help there? Or, is it too soon to worry about it? Its offered in March, ends in May and is about 2 miles down the road. Part of me is thinking that is a great jump ahead of everyone else. But, another wonders if its overkill for EMT class and something to not even worry about, yet...

  8. How would a patient steal something off of your body??? I worked in a rough part of town at the trauma center and would wear diamond ear rings daily and never had anyone really even notice them. In my experience the patients you encounter are more focused on themselves than on you and what you are wearing...if they're truly patients and not just looking for a taxi ride.

I didnt think it was actually possible to be successful in stealing it... But, I have heard a few people here in nearby Oakland say that sometimes they have had patients get grabby with them.

  9. Lisa that is cute ... did anyone tell your brother why one should NOT drop the soap in the first place ?

    cheers

He did do some time (here and there) in county for stupid stuff as a teenager. Ya think he would know..lol Maybe he never

"learned" or was angry that it was on a rope, and thusly, hard to drop..lol

  10. 1) Welcome

    2) If you run into a bum on Fisherman's Wharf who claims to be an ex Firefighter/Paramedic, he is Tim, great guy.

    3) If you are called to an unshaven male who has been living at the airport for several days and is now seizing, that's me. Be liberal with the ~az~am's, heck, midazolam, diazepam, lorazapem, I don't mind!

    4) Education is important. Get some college A&P, pharmo, English and pato under your belt!

    5) Again, welcome.

    Ben

Thank you! LOL If you have a strong accent I wont mind giving you anything you want, medically speaking whistle.gif

Couldn't agree more...I didn't go through my medic yet without credit but I have my basic and intermediate all with no credit hours. I'd be that much farther ahead for the same work had I been smarter. I think its excellent to have other options left open. Even if you end up head over heels for ems, it's hard on your body, and a tough profession to make real money in. GET CREDIT where credit is due.

I tried to call CCSF yesterday, but I am going to assume that they are out for the holiday. The spring 2010 classes are all CLOSED!! Yikes. But in a way, I am glad, I wanted to wait till summer. However, I am afraid if I dont pay for my classes NOW, I will get shut out of the fall classes..lol So now, I am on a slight OMG mode and trying to get my name out, and possibly some early info so I can make sure I dont miss out. Its months away, I know. But, I am a planner. I like to plan, plan again, plan for it to not happen, and plan again... lol

  11. My aunt one year, litterally gave my older brother soap on a rope. He was about 24, and when he opened it the first thing out of his mouth was,"Where in the hell am I going to get soap stuck that I need a rope to get it out?". Every year I snicker to myself and can see my poor brother sitting there, holding it up next to the tree asking that question..lol

  12. You are still young so don't get overly concerned about time.

I hope so. I am trying to tell myself that I have maturity (kinda..lol) and age on my side, while not being too old. Then I kinda worry that someone in their 20's will breeze past me since I am well into my thirties..*sigh I am just gonna grin and bear it, try hard, and do my best.

I really really like your plan o action with the city college. Sine I plan on going through to Paramedic at SFC anyway, its only a big duhhh to start there. I just am not a huge fan of the city streets, thats just the sissy in me. I guess there is only one way to get over that. blink.gif Okay then, I feel better, its a more solid option. The spring 2010 classes are closed already. I need to get a jump on the summer or fall classes ASAP before I lose a spot there. Thanks so much

  13. Did you check out all the City/Community colleges before settling for NCTI?

There is San Francisco city which seems to be a good program. And one closer to me that is a community college in Pittsburg, but that one is 5 months VS the other two programs that are 8 weeks. And I was told by two people that its not the "best choice". There is actually another that is only 4 weeks in Berkeley, but something about that doesnt feel right. I narrowed it down to NCTI and the San Francisco program, but, have not put any money down on either as of yet. I really am looking for a school that has great hands on time during and after its program. I dont want to just textbook learn everything, take the NR, pass (hopefully) and then be a wreck in real life. I live about 40 minutes plus from both schools and about 15 minutes from the community college one. I know that when it comes to the Paramedic program I want to go to San Francisco, it seems to have the best, but, more costly.

  14. Hi everyone. I am new to EMS, and will be starting school June 2010. It took a few weeks to decide which school to find out here in CA (Bay area) but, I think I settled on NCTI. I am 34, and finally forcing the path (wayy too many excuses before) to do what I have wanted to do for about 10 years now. I am married, have two tweens, and am ready to make this happen. I hope to be certified, and working by late next year. Right now, on papaer, my goal is to work as a Basic for about a year and a half, maybe 2, and then go to school for Paramedic. I am not in any rush as I want to do this correctly and with lots of thought and planning. I signed on here to maybe meet a few people from my area, to definitly learn from as many angles as possible about the good, bad, ugly, and rewarding of EMS. I have also heard that people who are not in EMS, esp. family do not understand a lot of what your going through. So, even as early as school, I thought it would be great to have some friends who have been there and "get it".

    Thanks

    Lisa
