  1. Actually I almost went to that school and found out in my research the very things he said. The credits also don't transfer if you later want to go to another school to continue onto medic or fire. Thanks for wanting to warn future students hun.

  2. Dear Santa may I have the lego castles ( Wolf clan), the orignal Power Rangers full set with: zords, villians, and the command center, Polly Pockets ( I think that was the one "girlly" toy I had), the 2 story Play Mobile basic house, and and and..... My beads! oh yes my beads that gave me hours of fun.

  3. Ok you say 1% are hospitalized, is that an estimation, no offence but following that how many die ?

Best advice would be go to an allergist, and be evaluated ... a child in Canada would NOT be allowed to attend public school

If you did produce a daughter (I don't know family history for cervical cancer and genital warts)

this is actually a very mild response they hospitalized you for this sound like your first statement ... if your that sensitive to pain, maybe think about making a child ... just saying.

The 1% is an estimation. There is actually a way to get into school here in the US without being vaccinated. It's a pain in the neck to do so but can be done. Being that I'm 3rd generation allergic to it at what point to I knowingly comment child abuse? The males don't have much genatic imput in this family tree so if I have a daughter the chances of her taking after Dmitri in any way is slim to none. Heck as it is I have pictures that I don't know if the female in the picture is me, mom, grandmother, or an aunt.

    The reaction I have now is mild. It toned down after I was about 14 years old found that out when I had to have all my shots for high school. ( My mom didn't take me to get some vaccines until it was forced on us.) When I got the TB test the frustration was in that the area swelled up and I was having a hard time bending my arm for alittle while. Ever tried to ride a bike with your arm hyperextended? It's not easy. That was about 13 months ago for my EMT class and APPLE accredditation at work. if($("bnrTop")){var adTarget;adTarget = topBnr ;document.writeln('');}admeld_publisher = 34;admeld_site = 'dictionary';admeld_size = '728x90';admeld_placement = 'above-fold';

  4. Just wanting to add a few points to the topic that vaccines bring their own problems. I am 23 years old and have already told my husband when we have kids I don't want them vaccinated. Why? Because I am that 1% of America that would be hospitalized after every shot as a child. I am speaking from personal and family experiance. My mother and grandmother also had these side effects to any vaccine:

Swollen injection site ( sometimes as much as 3 times normal size)

Fever that would peek at 103-104F for 48 hours. Fever reducing medications do not work in my family.

"Spider veins" radiating out from the injection site

Injection site was hard and HOT to the touch if fever was not present

Children as of at least a year ago have these reactions. Had a 3 year old last year the day after her shots had those signs. All the teachers are freaking out and I look at her and say, "just call her mom and have her taking to St. Jo's Children's. She's fine." Sure enough mom came back the next day saying, "My daughter is allergic to vaccines!"

Even to this day if I get a vaccine I'm looking at a low grade fever, swelling, and a site that is hard to the touch. Getting the TB test done was fun. The site instantly reacted and I'm sitting there sighing in frustration.

So ya do you think I rushed out and got the H1N1 vaccine? Nope.

ON the topic of the volly though: She's an idiot. She puts herself at risk all the time. Just follow BSI and wash hands constantly.

  5. The Birthday Dirge" sung to the tune of "The Volga Boatmen". The thud that follows each "Happy Birthday!" is traditionally accompanied by a "HUHN"-like grunt.

Happy Birthday! <thud!> Happy Birthday! <thud!>

    1. Now you've aged another year

Now you know that Death is near

Happy Birthday! <thud!> Happy Birthday! <thud!>

    2. Children dying far and near

They say that cancer's caused by beer

    3. Doom and gloom and dark despair

    People dying everywhere!

    4. Typhoid, plague and polio

Coffins lined up in a row

    5. Now that you're the age you are

    Your demise cannot be far

    7. Birthdays come but once a year

Marking time as Death draws near

    8. Long ago your hair turned grey

Now it's falling out, they say

    9. We brought linen, white as cloud

Now we'll sit and sew your shroud

    10. It's your birthday never fear

You'll be dead this time next year

    11. See the wrinkles on your face

Like the pattern of fine lace

    12. Were I sitting in your shoes

I'd go out and sing the blues

    13. When you've reached this age you know

That the mind is first to go

    14. May the candles on your cake burn like villages in your wake!

Happy birthday <thud> Happy Birthday <thud>

( This filk is very common in the SCA and other recreation groups. There is no one version of the song and my last check it was up to over 40 lines. hehe The candles happen to be my favorite one.)

  6. Pardon my ignorance here, but I have heard of a unibrow, but never uniboob.

    Similar?

:: chuckles:: A uniboob is what happens with sports bras. They tend to smash a girl's breasts together forming one massive (unattractive to say the least) uniboob.

  7. Wear a sports bra maybe.

Ya I agree with you. Sports bra, danceskin body suits, one piece swim suits, etc are all ment to: absorb sweat, keep you dry, and not let anything show. On the down side of those though there is a highly annoying rash that a girl can get from sweat being held close to the body and those can make it worse. Personally if I'm working out or when I was doing clinicals I wore a sports bra for a ton of reasons. On the job is no time to be thinking, "Does this give me a uniboob?" because who gives a damn? What does matter is confort.

  8. I would notice it but I don't think I would give it any thought. Lets face it alot people get tattoos not knowing it's meaning. They just like the design and wanted it on their body.

  9. We do have bigger fish to fry- take the show for what it is- entertainment, and if it's really a bad show, it won't last long anyway- problem solved.

To play slight devil's advicate: Is it a bad show to us only because we know how things *should* be? Or is it a bad show to anyone regardless of any knowledge of emergency medicne?

This is something that I long ago had to learn. Personally I feel professional wrestling is awful and I can't believe it's been on TV for so many years. Though I had to realize I feel this way because I could see the faults. I went into stage combat at the way too young of age of 4. ( My mother and step father were both in the group and I joined to help grieve over a loss in the family.) I have tried more than once to watch pro. wrestling such as WWF and all I can see are mistakes. So I end up getting disgusted and turning it off. I can now watch it and use it for ideas when I go to plan a show. I will admit the Rock has gotten me out of some rock and hard places in my "fight dances" when I find one person on their back and I somehow I have get across a stage to their weapon of choice

Could we as an EMS community doing the same to Trauma? We have been there, done that, or at least read the books so we see the problems and loop holes in the show. As people with knowledge we're getting frustrated, ranting and raving saying how bad this show is when in fact it's not all that horrid?

  10. It has been a few years since I last went into a West Marine, Boater's Word, or a boat show for that matter but back when I was at them on any given weekend they had special kits made just for sailors. These kits were mini trauma packs and ment to keep a person alive and stable for up to 3 days. I can't remember the item list that would be in one off hand ( or how much they were I was a kid at the time and didn't think of money). I just remember having 2 kits on the boats I grew up on. One was the basic kit and the other was called the Coast Gaurd kit because if you needed that one you were also on the radio for the CG. I very vaugly remember the CG kit having some auto-injectors in it. Again I was a child the last time I saw it. Things most likely have changed.

  11. I hope that means the children with severe allergies will not be attending your school anymore then, otherwise you will be the only one "breathing easy" while you wait for EMS while a childs airway closes doctor.gif

No epi-pens we can give. My director thought the seizure medication was the same thing like an epi which I knew it wasn't.

zippyRN I know which is something that bugs me when I hear them talk. I"ve been trying to get out of this school for a while.

  12. I'm a PVK teacher's aid who is also the school EMT. Which is very confusing. As a preschool we're not required to have any medical staff at all. If something did happen my boss would flip my title from teacher's aid to EMT. See why I started to freak out a bit?

I just spoke to my boss and told her it was out of my scope. She wasn't aware of exactly what is was. She thought it was like an epi-pen. It's being sent home today and removed from the building. Which means I can breath alot easier.

Thanks for your replies guys. :: takes a deep breath and goes back under my rock::

  13. Ok as many of you know I currently teach in a preschool. We also have kids that come in at like 3pm and stays until 6pm. These kids come in from the local middle schools so that they aren't "lach key kids". Now I am only an EMT-Basic. In school I was told the only medications I could give where: charcol, epi-pens ( after checking the 5 Rs), and Nitro ( after checking the 5 Rs). Ok I understand this. Not a problem.

I was just ( and I mean 3 seconds ago) handed a box with 2 doses of rectal diazepam and told that if our new aftercare kid has a seizure I am ordered to give it. Isn't this an ALS drug? Wouldn't I get into a whole mess of trouble if I were to administer this?

    Um... help!!!!!!blink.gifwtf2.gifnoexpression.gif

  14. I join the international EMS community in mourning.

I've been trained to use the device, but have, luckily, never needed to.

Personal but open sidenote to Gypsy:

    1) Was he also a "Scadian"? I went, "garbed", to a few events, but never formally joined.

    2) Are you a "Kyurgian"(spelling?) in the society?

He was not a SCAdian but a man that we all have a certain amount of thanks to. Our Kingdom Chirugeon has had her life saved by an epi-pen a few times at events.

I was a Chirugeon for about 4 months before something happened that caused me to turn in my badge and vow to never again carry one. I am much happier being unoffical and just letting people know I have a kit with me. This isn't the place to hash on that though. PM me and I'll explain that one.

  15. As some of you know I'm part of a living history group called the SCA. This just came through on our message board for the local chapter. I figured it does kindof relate to us so I would foward it to here.

"The gentleman who invented the EpiPen, Sheldon Kaplan, has passed away. He lived in Clearwater, Fla and died of Hepatocellular carcinoma, a liver cancer, on Sept 21. He was 70 years old. I wonder if he had any idea how far that invention would go and how many lives he saved by working on a nerve gas antidote dispenser."

  16. There are roughly 2 trains of thought within chiropractic practices. One thought is called Straight Chiropractic that ONLY deals with the spine. The only thing they will do is realign the spine into propper aligment. This does help with alot of things. I will personally say it has helped my breathing, "female pains", and head aches. My mom will attest that it did decrease the severity and duration of her migraines if she got a treatment at the onset of one.

The other train of thought is Diverse Chiropractic. This teaching is when we get into the Jack of All Trades Master of None problem. Now I am not going to say that all chiropractors that follow that are horrible at their job and don't know what they are doing. There's a few good ones. If I hadn't gone to one I wouldn't have found out what happened to one of my wrists and had it correctly taken care of. It's because of that doctor's care that I now once again have full moment of my right hand and full feeling.

Before realizing I wanted to get into EMS I looked very hard into chiropractic and even picked which college I wanted to attend. So ya my views are rather biased to say the least.

  17. Honestly I would try Chiropractic ( if possible find one that went to Sherman College of Straght Chiropractic but that's more because I like their teachings) and massage therapy. There is a special massage modality for sciatica so when you look for an LMT ask if they have had the training or at least experiance with it in the past.

~ Beth and her mother who is on the phone with her.

  18. Ok this might be in the wrong section if it is please move it to the right one I wont be offended.

This is mostly to the firefighters we have on this board. Next month at the school I work at we're going over fire prevention and safety. Now yes we do have a curiculem we teach from but lets just face it: it beyond sugar coats and just leaves stuff out. So here's my question to all of you- What do you think a preschooler ages 4-5 should know about fire stafety, prevention, and you guys. Do any of you know where I can find pictures or videos of trainings/demos? Or can you send me some yourselves?

As some of you know I don't sugar coat things to my kids. I don't feel it helps them learn. My moto in teaching is the only thing that limits a child's learning is their teacher. If you were part of the penpal program you know my kids are sharp as tacks. hehe. ( No joke a few can even take vitals and do an EKG. Ask Lone he'll tell ya!)

As a teacher I know what things I think are important but as a firefighter you guys know what things kids are never told but would make your jobs a hell of a lot easier.
