  1. Was he a little quick in hooking the guy up? Yea, a little. He did follow the use of force chart. The guy refused the officers verbal commands. He was firm, polite, and explained the police would be leaving soon. (IIRC, they had chased a suspect and the suspect had stopped at that particular location.) Having people walk through while the LEOs are conducting an investigation/during a crime is not good. You don't know who they are, why they are there, what they are doing, etc. Anyone actually used an expandable baton? You HAVE to flip them violently out to expand them. The guy started to resist when he was cuffed by the second officer, one strike was applied, the guy brought to the ground, cuffed, and the situation over. I see a LOT of anti cop attitude. Why, I don't know. Other then hooking him up a little quick, he did everything else by the book.
  2. If a paid EMT or Medic refused to take a job, there would be calling for their job. What is the difference? Thats why we have gloves, gowns, masks and glasses on the bus. Wear them. Why should the citizens of that community suffer because of her ignorance and ineptitude? Refusing to enter a shooting scene before PD clears it is one thing. Refusing to enter a burning structure without the proper gear, training, and team is one thing. Refusing to go on flu like symptoms call because you have not been vaccinated is completely another. I wonder how many years prior she got the flu vaccine?
  3. Yet another shining star in Jersey's volunteer EMS System..... Words fail me.
  4. Agreed, but when you call other parties names.... Don't get me wrong, I love a good debate. But to name call the parties involved, especially after being cleared, is just wrong. And I remember some of the debates from a few years back.
  5. Healthy debate? I have seen it degrading to namecalling. Phil obviously has a complex about him, and is hell bent on going after these guys, even though they were cleared. He has yet to prove one shred of one iota of evidence that suggests that this incident had any bearing on their treatments that they give to patients. Further, his claims that they were all gung ho to get to this call is unsubstantiated. While everyone has a right to an opinion, his is flat out unproven, and boarder line per se defamation, whereas the AMR crew that 46 referred to (and that incident took place 30-45 min from the original incident we are referring to), failed to use due regard while responding, and their failure to do so killed a man. There is a HUGE difference between a drunk attempting suicide (as corroborated by bystanders and friends of the victim), and going headlong into traffic without using due regard.
  6. Maybe PD, EMS, DPW, and you should learn from them. Why single out fire? Let me ask, who checks, front and back of your vehicle, every time? Both personal and work? Be honest.
  7. With due respect guys, its right there in the article. Direct findings as reported by a sworn LEO.
  8. If you reread the article I quoted (and then highlighted in bold), you will see where the police released parts of their interview with the subject, and that was one of their findings.
  9. But the difference is this guy intentionally placed himself there in an effort to harm or kill himself, knowing what bay Rescue 5 was quartered in, then placed himself in front of it to get run over. He could have just as easily called 911, and Marchman and/or Baker Acted himself.
  10. http://www.firerescue1.com/fire-news/597966-fla-firefighters-cleared-after-running-over-homeless-man/ Sounds like he fell through the cracks of the system. This gentleman obviously needs help, for both his substance abuse and his depression. However, this seems like a well thought out attempt at ending his life, rather then bungling by the crew of Rescue 5, as many have implied. My hopes are that he gets the help he needs, and that members of this forum will wait until the final investigation has been completed before passing judgement.
  11. Welcome from the Southern Jersey Shore (hopefully for not too much longer ), from a Medic who can't decide where he wants to live. Orlando is a tough area, move to the coast. Either one.
  12. I was involved with a CISD after I was on an MVC that killed a classmate of mine, and her sister. I would have much preferred an informal, grab a chair and pull it up in the engine bay, and just talk with the old salts and the counsilers, the CISD did work. I think the CISD is helpful, as long as it is not forced.
  13. Fairly urban EMS here. Worked BLS for Exceptional Medical Transportation in AC NJ, got my MICP, then worked Medic/SCT 1 in AC, transferred off critical care to MICU only, working Medic 6 in AC, 7 in Galloway Twp, and 8 in Somers Point, NJ. All are second or 3rd due ALS to the city. A typical summer night brings 15-20 dispatches, usually 10 or so treats, the rest being recalls, unfounded or redirects. I love working during the day/evening. Nights aren't so much fun since ACPD lost their K-9s to the MUTT of a mayor. Of course, now I am on the ALS/BLS ambulance in the "country club" area of the county. Grrrr.
  14. Trooper Higbee was found innocent, and is in the process of getting reinstated with the NJSP. I went to school with the girls. I worked with Trooper Higbee on accident scenes. I was on that call. I know more then what was released. Lets try a different example, k?
  15. Who checks in front of their vehicle, every time, POV or work before taking off? As for those that blast them for driving out, when they were "dispatched for their own station", do your homework. There were multiple locations reported for the victim. Unless you HEARD the radio traffic for that day, how would you know where they were told to go? And what ever happened to innocent until proven guilty? Or do we just allow ourselves to be controlled by the media, who will sensationalize a story to sell papers, or garner readers?
  16. They pay really isn't bad at all. In fact, IIRC, we are one of the highest paid in the area, if not state. Some of our quarters are pretty nice, others, well, they leave a lot to be desired. However, checking out a SUV or Rescue body truck in the rain/snow/cold/wind really blows. I've thought about that area. But the prospect of cold, somehow, just dont rub me the right way.
  17. Can it happen? Sure. It is rare, especially when the FDs have close relationships with the Medic Mills, and require new hires to have their Medic cert/license in an unreasonably short amount of time. Now, making Medic an option, rather then a mandate is a start. Further, until EMS makes the living and working conditions and compensation better, EMS only services will continue to loose people at an alarming rate. Who wants to sit on street corners all day/night, eating fast food, and maybe laying down on the cot, when they could be relaxing at a station, eating home cooked meals, relaxing in a recliner, and sleeping at night? How about the benefits, lack of pension, and poor equipment? I work EMS only right now, as an MICP in South Jersey. I also hold certification as a FFI, and licensure as Paramedic in Fla. I am there right now, applying to FDs. I want something to show for my years of service. I want to sleep at night. I want a day off.
  18. Mike, perhaps you had apathetic docs to deal with, but ours activly engage us about what is going on, and usually give us what we ask for. We have one "base" hospital (ACMC-City), so if we deliver there, we get to see the final outcome, and discuss with the doc. DJ, I think I answered most, if not all your questions over on emtlife (BLSBoy). Please keep me updated on your intentions. We do have a few spots open for FT medics ATM. And there is a bonus for me......
  19. Huge difference. Structural fires are often short duration incidents. Wildfires are extended duration incidents. Structural fires have complex and dangerous hydrocarbons burning. Wildfires have natural brush burning. I have fought both, including a brush fire in full PPE, including SCBA. Unless you are on the front of a brush truck heading into the head of the fire to defend homes, there is no need for structural gear and SCBAs. Yes, I know you are not supposed to do that.
  20. Something that is completely misunderstood, and often neglected is mental health. Sure, you will get the 16 year old who scratches his/her wrists for attention when they don't get their way. But how about some of the other people out there? The ones that have undergone severe emotional trauma, and tried to bury it, and move past it? Everyone deals with trauma, be it mental or physical, in different ways. There is a stigma attached to depression, anxiety, bipolar, manic depressives and the like. Often times, those suffering do so in silence. What we see is a cry for help. DON'T WRITE THEM OFF BECAUSE YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND Be an advocate for them. Ensure that the ER does not throw them in triage. Talk to them. Let them know that they have someone to talk to, and not be judged. If you couldn't tell, this is a subject that I am painfully familiar with.
  21. Something tells me that we don't really have to worry about him reproducing. It seems that girls just aren't his cup o tea........
  22. Stay away from FMTI. At all costs. As for Fire Academy training, you can NOT beat the education you will get at the state fire college, or at Central Florida Fire Academy.
  23. I had your back until this one. Underarmor and nylon both do not require direct flame contact to melt and cling to the skin, making your bad day that much worse. I was working out in an underarmor shirt one day when we had a structure fire. I was cool as I could be, but thankfully, there was no rapid fire growth to make that shirt my second skin.
  24. Ah hah! We have another one! A hello to you, we met my first day on orientation, at Medic 7. I had you several times while I worked BLS treat my patients. I look forward to working with you once I am cleared to ride the street. PM me if ya haven't figured out who I am yet.
  25. This is something I am rather proud of, since I am an AtlantiCare Paramedic Trainee. And I do believe that we also have a former ACMC MICU Medic on our forums.... http://www.pressofatlanticcity.com/181/story/353206.html
