  1. To the original poster sorry about your luck bro. Life sucks some nurses are bitches I hope you don't have to go there often. If it gets that bad make a formal complaint. To the poster who had the nurses brother as a patient- Personally I would have told her to get the hell out of my truck. If she won't have her arrested when you get to the ER. To zippy- I don't profess to know what goes on on your side of the world so I can't speak to that but here's how it goes in my little peice of the world. It's all about respect. I respect the nurses I turn over to at the many hospitals I have to go to in the metro Detroit area. If I like you I will find little ways to make your life easier. It goes a long way, but I expect that respect reciprocated after a while of getting to know me and usually it is. If you are off duty, you are not able to practice without some sort of organization backing you. The saying here is a medic isn't a medic without an ALS truck and the same goes for nurses. They can't operate to their level without some sort of backing. If you are off duty and come up on one of my scenes and haven't been drinking (I gotta evaluate for this, most of my scenes are at special events that serve alcohol) as long as you offer to help and arent demanding then usually I let you do something for me (hold the stretcher, carry a bag ect...) sorry bro it's my ass I will do all the advanced treatment. If you are demanding, overbearing, drunk ect... I will have you removed. Legally I don't have to turn my scene over to an off duty Doc unless he comes to the ER and Med control agrees. For Detroit East Med Control I'm pretty sure the only ones they would leave the scene with would be an ER doc or a Trauma surgeon, maybe a cardiologist if it was a cardiac call. So the point is zippy, there is a pretty big fall from that high horse of yours. You might want to find a rope ladder and join the rest of us on Earth.
  2. I was hired a few months shy of my 19th birthday. Truthfully most privates only care if you have a pulse and a license. You may not be able to drive untill you're 21 or 25 depending. I drive could right away due to my company's policy but I think we were the exception rather than the rule as my company self funded their insurance.
  3. Wasn't my call but I heard "Go up Commerce rd. Turn Left at the Big rock in the field where Bobby got his deer last year"
  4. Glad you started still doesn't do much if you don't have the whole package Nobody said anything about being on the offensive. And do you really think that the psych that thinks you're the devil or the junkie all strung out that is trying to kill you for your drugs or the random nut who just wants to kill you is really going to care about that blade in your hand. Evidentally you think I mean it will open and stab you. That's not what I'm saying. It is because flat of the folding knife is a hard object pressed against your spine in an area that is normally recessed if you fall the knife is going to make contact with the ground and your entire body weight smacks against it essentially putting your spine between a rock and a hard place. This is why smart firearm instructors advise against carrying in a true SOB position and most EMS instructors I've had in the last 12 years have advised against carrying shears there. You condone carrying a folder in SOB carry why not a FB. OK Rambo you said you STARTED a 3 month defense course. That doesn't exactly make you a zen master. As for common sense goes. Think about it. You are in EMS think about spinal trauma Not a big fan of auto's or Gerber's. Assisted openers are just as quick and more legal than an auto. Most of the major Mfg's except Spyderco have some sort of AO line. Not sure where you are from but in MI Auto's are illegal for anyone except a 1 armed man or PD. I have heard rumors of an exception for Fire and EMS personnell but in my research I cant find it. I know my PD won't mess with me but why chance it. OK Rambo you don't think bad guys play with knives too? You said you started a course. Evidentally you're not one of them I'm 6'3 with a 60" chest. I'm a walking psychological deterrent. If they're dumb enough to take me on, the folder I carry isn't going to make a damn bit of difference. Trust me If I can leave I will. As far as H2H. That's a decent idea. Unless he has more than you. For everyone else If you like the basis of what DBS thinks just shift the knife a little to one side or the other, for firearms it's called kidney carry.
  5. It think he's more questioning the dose. Our protocols are .5mg for alive 1mg dead max 3mg.
  6. As for the guy that said just use a knife here is some food for thought. A knife is not the best SD weapon to begin with. If you have no training in true knife fighting techniques that you're even more at a disadvantage. I say this and I am a collector of decent knives. I usually carry 2 on me at all times. The difference is I know their limitations. One is better than open hand but there are way better things that you don't have to get so in close with. (all mentioned above) Now think about this. You are carrying a knife in the small of your back. What happens if you fall on your back with it there during your fight? #1 WHOOPS!!! there goes your idea for SD and you can't get to it because there is some whackjob on top of you trying to kill you. #2 Hey why can't I feel my legs? Oh yeah thats right you run the risk of a spinal injury too because now you have your bodyweight falling on this area that isn't flat with the rest of your body so all the force of the fall is concentrated there. So now you're even less able to defend yourself.
  7. I'm pretty sure Law for the US says all new ambulances have to be diesel powered. That being said I used to work in a couple of OLD type 2 & 1 gas rigs. I loved them. But what's not to love about a 454 chevy engine and a .410 rear end. They were on their last legs when I worked on them but it was fun while it lasted. I'd love to find another one and turn it into a parade truck. The old trucks were just more comfortable. BTW A hybrid Type II is technically possible Now that Chevy has the hybrid tahoe. They could work it into a van chassis and go from there. It would be interesting to see if a hybrid's 12 v system could keep up with an ambulance's increased electrical demands.
  8. So, 1 person walking backwards? Not sure I like that
  9. We didn't hurt ourselves but I had this one, she was about 450-500 and she needed to go to the doctor's. Of course we had the ghetto stairs involved. She was able to walk good enough so we had her walk to the cot on the sidewalk, (This was in the days of 2 man stretchers), carefully wheeled her to the truck and lifted her in. My partnet was great. I never got injured lifting no matter how much we took. Anyways we were waiting in the doctors office when one of the front wheels collapsed. So we end up balancing her on 3 wheels to finish the call. I'm pretty sure we both got lucky on that one.
  10. Sounds about like the same deal as when my dad broke his
  11. my dad had his back broke on a 500 pounder. 4 of them on the corners of the stretcher going down some ghetto stairs. Dad was on the lower side. Rookie stumbles on the stairs and puts all the weight on him. He finished the call then went to the ER. Turnedout he broke a low T-Spine (can't remember which one) he was out for 4 months. Kinda cool though. I was just coming on the road at that time so he ended up proctoring my EVOC while on light duty.
  12. It wasn't an insult, just an observation and trust me at 27 you are an older guy, I'm 30. People of our era know how to behave at these concerts. Not like the 13-21 year olds I deal with at all the EMO shows that Live Nation likes to book at my theatre. I enjoy doing racetracks of all kinds also. I worked at a dragstrip 10 years ago and loved it. We have a road race course now that is 99% ALS so I will get to work it this summer.
  13. Not bad Rob zombie/ Ozzy should be older guys. A lot of drinking some fighting, not a whole lot of heat problems. My last rob zombie show was a first for me though. I actually had a guy having an MI. I never get good medicals at shows.
  14. So how do you figure out which one worked so you can start a drip of it afterward?
  15. It's not always a blessing. We had both and they pulled our Lido. Some like 1 some like the other
  16. F/T gig- Nope, I'm a number to them, they are a paycheck to me (Not truly EMS related) P/T gig- Yeah I'd say so. We got a bad rep for a while due to some idiodic ex employees but we are changing it. Not many in the world can say they do what I do (Special Events EMS no slings no 911) and I have the best assignment of them all. My boss truly cares about his people, I can say I would do anything for him and he would do anything for me(and has done a lot), I have a good core group of co workers with some promising new guys. I can truly say our equipment is as nice as it can be and we try to keep it that way. There will always be people that frustrate you at any job. Do your best to work around them
  17. #1 have you even ever watched HS football? Some of those kids will out hit some of the NCAA guys I've worked #2 you need to think outside your own little world. It may take 7 minutes where you are but where I work football games (Detroit public Schools) If we wern't there as an ambulance the avg response would be about 20-25 min on a good day as for a second rig, good luck.... #3 As was said before Sports are a money making operation (gate fees, concessions, pay to play(if the school has that rule) so why tie up your resources when they can contract someone.
  18. 90% of the events I work are because of crowd size. Do you really think an ambulance is needed at a rib cookoff. NO not really, not until there are 30,000 people a day running around in a contained area. I was just making the point that there have been people who have contacted us mainly for the players.
  19. I think we are looking at this from 2 different areas. No, an ambulace is not "required" at all sporting events and any sports association , whether it be a school or private league, that tries to force a 911 provider to be there free of charge by using political pressure needs their management changed immediately. But if the association chooses to pay for the service I see no problem with that either. If people did not pay for it I might be out of a part time job I really enjoy. I do not see it as wussifying of our kids or being overprotective.
  20. Not true. Where do you sit for a HS football game? I know that I sit on the sidelines or out of the end zone as does a crew for the pros. Granted there are more crews to handle the crowd at a pro or NCAA gig and if something happened in my crowd of course I would treat it. I've had this conversation with my mgmt. Our primary focus is the participants and working with the Athletic Training staff.
  21. The parents want to insist let them pay. They don't want to pay they don't get a standby
  22. Standing by at youth sporting events is not dumb. Granted it is not done a whole lot outside of the high school realm here. If the association has the money to contract an ambulance, let em. Why tax 911 if you don't have to especially in major urban areas. Usually we only run BLS at most games but at least they are to the ER quicker. And I've taken at least 2 that I can remember from football games that had no feeling below the neck. Could some be drama? maybe Did they recover? hopefully. Why make them wait 30 min to get a truck there. And truthfully why are our kids worth less than pros or college athletes? People would be shocked, horrified and screaming if there was not an ambulance at the NCAA, NFL, MLB,NHL or MLS games now granted I know the kids generate less force than the pros in all they do but they also do not have the training that they pros/college do to prevent injuries. Now mind you this is coming from someone who played many hours of full contact pickup football up untill age 28 with no pads and no worries of injury.
  23. I do NCAA and HS Football, NCAA and HS Hockey, Marathons, triathlons, sometimes baseball. I think Timmy has a good list. I'll think on it though
  24. I have tattoos I carefully chose them, thinking about one for several months and one for several years. Both spots were chosen to never be seen in professional life as so will be any further ones. We had a couple guys who were almost militant about the fact that they were double sleeved and it didn't change who they were so why did they have to wear long sleeved shirts during summer. One guy went to the point of getting swallows on his hands to prove a point. They both ended up getting fired for unrelated events, but it used to astound me that guy with a foot long pot leaf tattooed on his forearm could actually bitch about having to cover it with a shirt while working in a professional environment. And the boss allowed them to wear T shirts when we got in turnouts just like the rest of us.
  25. No Prov novi is there and expanding they are going to make that a level 1. I think he means one of the office buildings near 12 oaks
