  1. Mine's always been, "52 come back to station!"

Then me and my partner spend the next 20 minutes wondering what the "F" we did wrong and how much BS trouble we're in for.

I affectionately call it the "Anthony Parallax."

    :)

I bet that is scary lol. Never been told to come back to base. (Granted I have always worked events as an EMT) Hoping it will change soon.

  2. I may have not stated clearly enough that I would NEVER purchase anything like that from CL. I have bought items for my home before such as dressers and the like, and I think even a bp cuff for school.

I just don't know the point WHEN it becomes illegal. I think the Cric kit should be illegal. But who do you report the unlawful selling of these items??

Defibs (IMO) should be illegal to sell unless to a licensed provider AND it is from a dealer, you never know what you are getting or why they are selling it. Is someone REALLY going to test it to see if it works properly?? I dont believe it is something that you can jsut take somewhere to get it checked. Who knows maybe it is and I am incorrect. Irregardless it scares the tar outta me. Iv setups ok sure some ppl know how to do it and I am sure it will be a hey wanna see a cool party trick?? (I can see a new Darwin Award brewing)

These items who are to be used by trained personnel should be monitored. I am a Basic I do not need a shiny intubation setup. I also would not be intubating anyone outside of work where I am protected.

At what point is the line drawn?? What items have ya'all seen for sale like this?

If they're reselling medical equipment, they need a permit to do that. eg. "Reseller License" If they're selling controlled substances and devices, they need a permit and DEA License to do that. Consider in some cases, however, that it may be a family selling products left behind from the death of a post-surgical or cancer patient. This guy, sounds like one of those ZombieSquad ppl that buy crap just because they can.

If you ever look close, even some of the most basic equipment we use, has "Federal Law restricts this device to sale by or on the order of a physician". I just read it off the package of a Yankauer.

I agree! However it is difficult to monitor these items. I would be willing to bet that most if not all of these items are stolen from who knows where.

Wow on a suction catheter?? You can get suction devices online. I have never got one but I would think you would be able to get the tips/catheters from the places that sell them to. So does that mean that a Yankauer is an RX device?

  3. For me one of my most scariest moments was when I was working a supercross event. It was so loud, a contestant had made a jump and broken his wrist. His bike was down and mangled he also had a sprained ankle. Couldnt walk so we were to carry him off the track with bikes turning the corner at top speeds and jumping, we were on the other side of the hill. We HAD to move him fast but the buzzing of the bikes and the announcer not able to see what is going on. That was scary!! He would have been killed had we not moved him because right after we moved him (record speed) another bike biffed it, he was ok tho.

  4. I was looking on CL today for some EMS pants or boots. I came across this post. When does it become illegal to sell this stuff? I mean thru a dealer who check and is qualified to sell the items to the PROPER personnel I can see that. But some of the things I have seen for sale online thru private citizens is unreal!! I have seen different items online for sale that concern me should it get into the wrong hands. Anyone know is selling things like this is legal??

  5. Personally I dont Dip. It is gross and very unattractive. As a woman I would never date someone who did. The kissing alone to me is repulsive. However I am a smoker. I know it is not a good thing however I rarely (if ever) smoke while working.

As far as the military and chewing/smoking. I have (past tense getting divorced from military) lived on post for years and for me roughly I would say that 30-40% of the service members did smoke or chew. From what I saw.

  6. A little bit of poor taste in asking the police officer to leave. But, it was well within the rights of the manager. Just seems odd to ask someone like them to leave. Personally, if I worked in an establishment like that, I would welcome police officers. I would welcome them not because of how I feel about them but for the sole reason they are a cop. Seeing a police officer in public would generally make me feel safer.

and for the OP, premium members are allowed to change their alias. Since you are not a premium member and no longer a mrs, you would have to contact the admin and ask him for a special exemption due to personal circumstances.

It was changed before this premium member thing came along and for a little bit after. It was approx a year 1/2 or so when I had it changed. I have also sent a message to Admin. I dunno whats going on.

Red & Black cafe shows Portland officer the door, won't sell him coffee again

    By Lynne Terry, The Oregonian

    June 03, 2010, 3:41PM

james crookerView full sizeKimberly A.C. Wilson/The Oregonian Officer James Crooker working the Rose Festival this afternoon.

In mid-May, Portland police Officer James Crooker went to Southeast Portland on a patrol call. With a few minutes to spare, he decided to get a coffee.

So, he popped into the Red & Black cafe on Southeast 12th Avenue near Oak Street, bought a coffee and was heading out when a customer approached him, saying she appreciates the hard job that police officers do every day in Portland.

One of the co-owners of the cafe, John Langley, has another point of view. While the officer and customer were chatting, he walked up and asked Crooker to leave, saying he felt uncomfortable having a uniformed officer in the vegan cafe.

The incident, which was brief, speaks volumes about the tensions between Portland police and some members of the community who are more worried about police shootings than protection.

Crooker said he was surprised to be shown the door but left immediately. He said this marked a first during his nine-year in law enforcement, two in Portland and seven in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

"The places that I've been kicked out of before have been places like the methadone clinic," he said. "I've never been kicked out of a regular cafe."

But the 36-year-old officer, who was born and raised in Portland, said it's all part of working this city's streets in a uniform.

"We have a unique relationship with the community," he said. "You're there to protect them but on the other hand they don't know what that involves. Being gracious is part of it."

A former Marine who served in Iraq, Crooker didn't take the incident to heart.

"It was not personal," he said. "He was being hostile to my uniform," he said.

Langley, who did not raise his voice during the encounter, agreed.

"It's not about the police," Langley said. "It's about what the police represent to many people who frequent the cafe.

The cafe draws vegans -- of course -- along with homeless people and animal-rights and environmental activists who Langley said have been targets of police abuse and harassment.

But the cafe also draws customers like Cornelia Seigneur, who blogged about the incident on her website.

Seigneur, a freelancer for The Oregonian who was enjoying lunch with her daughter on May 18 when Crooker came in, was the one who approached him.

"There have been some unfortunate situations recently," Seigneur said. "But overall the police are out there day in and day out protecting us."

She said she struck up a conversation with Crooker to show her support for police, who she said saved the life of a friend after he was shot by gang members.

When Langley asked Crooker to leave, she was startled.

"It was shocking," Seigneur said. "Everyone deserves to have a coffee, and he was served a coffee. It was humiliating."

She said there were only about three other people in the cafe and that no else seemed to notice the officer.

But the incident has fired a reaction, with dozens of comments pouring into Seigneur's website.

It's been so overwhelming that she took the blog post down but put it back up Thursday afternoon.

The cafe, too, has received a deluge of calls, with about half supporting the cafe and the rest expressing anger.

"We've received threats," Langley said. "People have threatened to attack us and break our windows."

    Still, he has no regrets.

"I never expected an police officer to come into the space," he said. "If it happened again, I wouldn't serve him."

    -- Lynne Terry

I sure would not patron that place. What happens when someone carries out their threats ie breaking a window etc?? Who do they call?? I hope someone does carry that out (no harm to person of course). Just glad I am not in that area, I would go say something to the (Co-owner) ask them about their feelings about fire and ems. What do ya all think?

EDITED TO ADD: I have contacted a Mod to PLEASE CHANGE MY USERNAME BACK TO traumachic or whatever it was. No response thus far. I am getting divorced and I am not going to be mrs bull anymore I'm SINGLE!!! woohoo PLEASE CHANGE IT MODS!!

  8. I don't know why they want the tube pulled while I am knocked out cept the Dr said he does not want me to hurt that bad. He said it will "hurt like hell". I am not so sure he KNOWS how to do it with RNY pts. He actually was going to pull it today but he said I was not ready (UGH) He also explained it to his staff today what they would have to do. They did not know. (Military Hospital) I do not know the type of tube I have the stamp on it has worn off. This is the closest tube I can find that is similar to mine. It is the first pic second one from the top. However mine had 2 things on the bottom one to inflate the balloon and the other to feed/drain. Actually it is more like the second one after going back to look at it.

I began having GI issues almost immediately post op from the gastric bypass. I had chosen the RNY bypass over the lap band for 2 main reasons. #1 being because the Dr at the time had only 2 weeks of training in the band (yikes). The second reason was because I needed the FEAR of dumping and getting ill if I ate things I should not be. I also needed the permanency of the RNY as opposed to the lap band.

Here is my before and after pics. I think it is my avatar but I am changing it, and you should be able to see the one I post better. I hope it works.

  9. Welcome back to CO!!! Once you get your certs back from the state, but sure to get in touch with the retac. Here's the website for you. Wish I'd have known that you were back in CO. I'd have given you this info before so you could have attended to Plains to Peaks Retac conference the first weekend of May.

    Rat

Well Thanks hun!! It sure is good to be back home!!

Awww crap I soo would have been there!! It is good to see Jeff Force is still instructing. He is a Drill Sgt when I took his class. (I failed got a 69% on his final) But a B in the class! Ah well.

I have an interview in 2 weeks so I am preparing for it now. I was told today I'll have my COEMS certs no later than next wed!

  10. Thanks so much for the info!!

Specially the G tube info. The Dr is putting me under to take it out. I did not know about lifting and etc. I don't nor have I ever fed thru it. I have had gastric bypass and they could not get to my pancreas without it is all. (anatomy is all it was).

Also awesome to know about having the hole close quicky. Did you have a bunch of drainage? The Dr WAS going to remove it today during a scope I had but he said it was not healed nuff to pull it. Dunno why I have had a tube in for 10 weeks now and this tube in for 7.5 weeks. He also wants to knock me out with come versed and fentanyl while removing it.

  11. Ok to begin from the beginning. I have JUST gotten a call from the state saying I will FINALLY be certified in Colorado no later than next week!!

I do not know by the time I go to this pre interview (2 long hrs away) IF I will have my physical certs in my hand. The # should be available to me via calling and getting it OR just looking it up on the states website. Does anyone know if this SHOULD be OK?? Of course I will bring the copy of the websites status of me and the # provided I can get it in a timely manner.

I have an orientation and Pre- Employment exam coming up "SOON". I have taken 1 pre employment exam and did well on it. It was just a short version of the state exam. Not too bad. However I was able to explain all my answers as to why I wrote them down at that time. That made things all better. You know 2 definitely wrong and 2 COULD be right but 1 is more right. Are all Pre employment exams written or have anyone experienced any different ones? I also MAY have to do the physical part either there then OR the next week for the "official interview" My question is what did that consist of for YOU?? I just want to be prepared.

Physically for that particular time frame (for me) I will be having my G tube pulled out on the 16th. Lifting should be my ONLY drawback for a week or do after it is pulled out and I heal adequately enough for my MD to release me to work and lift. I should be able to pass the stair test (w/o lifting) but I have no idea what else could be coming my way. I just want some examples please of things YOU had to do.

My last 2 EMS jobs there was no pre employment exam or anything they just loved me and knew I would be/am capable of awesome pt care and I am great under stress I also ask question when the time is right and learn from mistakes. I am a good rookie!!

So can anyone please give me some tips on exams, interviewing skills, as well as maybe something to expect with this company as far as physical ability and anything else you can think of??

    Any advice/input is greatly appreciated!

Lastly, With the mention of a G-Tube I have it cause I have has some pancreatic problems. They are resolved now and I made the appt this am to have it removed. I am on Tyl-3s How long before the drug screen should I DC them? It does not impair me but I am willing to go to reg tyl if needed. As I refuse to put my pts or partner in jeopardy.

  12. I remember the first incident. I could not believe that that child was OK. Now this incident. Those babies must have a Guardian Angel watching over. Either that or those Prams/Strollers are made VERY well!!

And Bliss I dont really know WHY but this comment cracked me up! Almost made OJ come outta my nose!!

"First, I assume a 'pram' is a stroller/buggy/child transportation device on wheels?"

  13. I am a Red Cross instructor in Canada, but I suspect that the American Red Cross is the same. The following are the guidelines I have to follow:

To be an instructor, I had to take the instructor course, which was over 2 weekends. I don't know what the cost it there, but here it was $550 including the course materials (and that was a number of years ago). I was told that here it is 35.00 for the materials (books and etc..).

To be able to teach on your own, you have to prove you carry insurance. Or, you can teach under another instructor, who carries insurance.

Your supplies have to be purchased from Red Cross. To do otherwise undermines the work that Red Cross is involved in to ensure that their programs are standardized through the region, and the work they do on your behalf to develop materials for you to use, and being involved in first aid and CPR research.

I will be working only thru the Red Cross. Instructing classes thru them ONLY. I will ask about the insurance and etc. They (as far as I know) will provide the manikins and supplies. I think part of the cost is included in the students course material fees. I will ask about the local college or a company/hospital and see IF I am able to teach a course under them as well.

I realize that you want to save money, but before you get into instructing, do your homework. There are a lot of potential expenses in starting to instruct - are you going to buy or rent manikins and AED trainers? Where will you get splinting and bandaging supplies? If you teach in a larger centre, do they require a business license? Talk to the rep, and find out if there are instructors who are running classes where they need a second instructor; there are class size limits per instructor. Are there colleges in your area that you could instruct at? If you can get on staff with a local college, they would already have the supplies, and you could work under their insurance and use their classroom.

Red Cross can audit your classes at any time, and if they find that you have been having classes without purchasing materials from them, including photocopying cards to use in your class, they can pull your instructor certification.

Good thing to know. I do not plan on doing anything I am not supposed to, especially photocopying cards. I am NOT going to loose any of my certs/credits/letters under my name NO WAY!!!

Make a list of questions - your rep will be able to help a lot, and can get you in contact with people to help you do this.

Thanks so much for the info. As I said before I plan on instructing thru the red cross only (for now) and working as an EMT on Disasters, deploying and such as events happen. It is hurricane season either now or coming up soon. So I want to be able to deploy as needed so I need to get on this asap. I worked some floods a while back in Washington I loved it. The only part was telling a woman approx 80y/o who had lived in her home for 40+ years that it was washed away. That was a hard thing to do.

  14. Hi there,

This is the first time I have posted in this forum. Well the inst side anyways. I have volunteered the last few yrs for the Red Cross. I have decided to become a First Aid/ Cpr inst and maybe babysitter instructor as well. Is anyone familiar with the Red Cross? For example how many hours they want you to volunteer per yr or how many classes you are to instruct.

I have an appt to meet with the Chapter Rep here in 2 weeks. (I volunteered in Washington before not Colorado). I just wanted some ideas is all. And also ask if anyone knows if I HAVE to use their materials ie ONLY purchased FROM them or if I can get them online (same books they use of course) I just am trying to save $ is all.

  15. I COMPLETELY agree on a mass firing of these "employees" fakers. I actually just go a call about 2 hrs ago from the state about my EMT cert. I am DEFINITELY doing this the legal way. I would NEVER falsify a document let alone a document like that.

I don't care if they have been "doing their job" since 1979 under false pretenses they need to be fired loose ALL retirement, benefits and etc.

HOWEVER I know in Colorado and NREMT you can check the status of a persons certs. It is SIMPLE!! http://www.nremt.org/ type in persons name and state. For example Nichole Bull (me) Colorado I am NREMT certified. This makes me think now that NREMT for EMS and PD and Fire should all be required to be put on a database and be able to prove their knowledge. Such as NREMT. I think it should be required because of ppl like this. Fire em all and give me one of their damn jobs!!

This is from the NREMT website when I looked up myself

The following EMS personnel matched the search information that you provided.

The search results represent a list of names of individuals who possess national registration at the First Responder, EMT-Basic, EMT-Intermediate, and/or Paramedic level. These results do not necessarily represent the current city/state where the individual lives or works. You should verify the search results and the current certification status of the individual in question with the appropriate state EMS licensing/certification agency. IE CHECK WITH THE STATE TOO!!

To contact a specific state EMS licensing/certification agency, click here.

    Displaying 1 to 1 of 1

    Name Residence

Bull, Nichole M. Colorado Spring, CO

    Displaying 1 to 1 of 1

This irritates and scares me to no end. I sure hope that employers are doing a more thorough check on prospective employees now. How many other states have non educated EMS,PD, FD and etc...

  16. Thanks a lot guys...this is going to be a friggin' blood bath...I can't wait!

I have until Saturday, so I could use more ideas if you've got 'em....(Not sure yet what time Wendy...)

    Have a great day all!

    Dwayne

I missed when and where!! I sooo want to go. I may be close nuff to attend. Where is it?

I suppose I should have read the whole post. Dammit I sooo would have recorded that and put it up here for ya. I think Wendy and I could have had fun with that... (insert me moping around now here)

  17. As far as CSFD I have noticed for the most part that they are nice helpful and some even decent looking :o However some are not helpful and etc. It is like that everywhere I am sure. It is HARD as hell here getting onto CSFD here. They rarely hire someone who has no fire exp. I have no fire exp.

As far as Pueblo I have not heard nor do I know any ems providers in that area. Plus I don't speak Spanish either. To be honest you kinda need to have some knowledge if not speak fluent Spanish in pueblo. However I never thought to even check about checking out the agencies in Pueblo. I may check them out down there. I do not know if AMR is down there however they seem to be EVERYWHERE!! I have seen lately some new trucks lately in town (either that or AMR changed their look).

  18. No, you lose all right as an American and are charged with criminal acts as a terrorist. You aren't simply deported. You are thrown in a prison like Guantanamo Bay. This I have no problem with. BUT if you are accused of terrorism, you can be held with just cause of being a "terrorist" and basically done with what they want. No trial or anything, just tossed in a prison off US soil.

For example, I am surfing the web, and I click on a link that takes me to a webpage on how to build a bomb. Or I am doing research for a school report and I come across material that might be considered "terrorist stuff". Just so happens DHS is monitoring activity on such webpages and then the FBI crashes down my door and I am stuffed in a cell at an undisclosed location. Brought up on charges of being a terrorist and that's that.

At least that's what I got out of the article.

I find that Example ironic. I was helping my EX husband who was in the army with some online courses. Transition from E-5 to E6 (you army vets know the classes I am talking about). I can not remember the name. It was something about how much dynamite would it take to blow up a tree that had a circumference of 22 inches. I was scared to death to google things like that. Then he got this cheat sheet with the answers on it and did the crap his damn self.

  19. I make over that and am in one of the lowest cost of living areas there is. I like Colorado but this old desert dweller would probably freeze to death if I moved up there.

Shoot you would freeze today. It is COLD low 40s here. DD went outside to play and her hands turned numb poor thing. Did I mention that they turned off the heat in the apt complex and now we only have ac? So no heat in my place right now. I think I am going turn the oven on for heat now..

If I liked texas I would be there. I would like to be in Florida tho at the beach in Miami...
