During an allergic reaction, what chemical is released into the body? This is a question that popped up on a study guide and I was leaning towards adrenaline as the corerct answer, but something else tells me otherwise. If anyone can fill me in, that would be great. Thanks!!!

From a test bank perspective, they are probably looking for histamine.

From a field practice view, histamine, epinephrine, cyclooxygenase-1, -2, serotonin, norepinephrine, insulin, glucagon, and acetylcholine are all released following the introduction of an allergen.

The correct answer for the specific study guide you're using is histamine. I had the same question...this you could have figured out by doing some internet searches and spent a chunk of time studying allergic reactions...

Now he's a question to original poster: How does that relate to the medicine medics give during allergic reactions?

BTW, good to study that, it'll be on the written entrance exam...but also have your patient assessment skills down pat. Many side questions will be asked during the evaluation.
